The German sailors scuttled the fleet in Scapa Flow while it was impounded there after WW1 as part of the Armistice agreement. The Admiral didn’t want the fleet to fall into British hands. 52 vessels were sunk.

I had no idea. Just thought they were fishing vessels that got unlucky. Takes on a different light now. Wow.

My understanding is that the causeways were built to keep German U Boats out of the areas between the islands so they couldn’t hide and then harass the fleets of ships that went in convoys to keep the UK supplied during the war. They were called the Churchill Barriers and also protected the Royal Navy in their anchorages.

I think those wrecks were scuttled during the war to block the channel to prevent U boats coming through, but the fisherman did not agree and moved one of the wrecks, which allowed a U boat to attack one of our ships. The causeways were added later.

I believe these causeways were built as coastal defenses in WWII and were known as 'Churchill Barriers' and later became the roads you were traveling on; also the wrecks are remains of blockships that were also part of the coastal defenses. All this occurred after the Royal Oak was sunk in Scarpa Flow. Great Vlog again, thanks.

The Italian prisoners of war built the causeways, but as they didn’t wish to work to support the war effort they worked on the assumption that they were building a lasting infrastructure for the good of the islands. I guess they did!

This may have been my favorite episode to date. Small villages and roads cutting through back country farm land has always been my thing. There's a familiarity to it, whether it's Ireland or France or America, I always feel at home in such places. Cheers, Kevin.

Kevin, it is after your midnight, but not yet mine. However, I have to take the son, his wife and their daughter to the airport at 0500 in the morning and must get to bed. . So considering we've always watched your UA-cam adventures closely, one could say you are almost part of the family. Therefore may you have a very wonderful Happy New Year and many excellent adventures!

Happy new year when it comes Kevin! On the Orkney episodes you have missed out on seeing so many things! Orkney was the neolithic capital of the world and has many buried chambers and sites around the island you can visit including the prehistoric village of Skarra Brae, the burial chamber at Maeshowe, the standing stones at the Ring of Brodgar amongst many others! It is even home to a vole that only exists on mainland Europe and not in the UK mainland! Think how that got there! Orkney is an amazing place and the Neolithic sites are mind blowing! Plus it is the home to my favorite single malt, Highland Park!

The blockships of Scapa flow - The Orkney Islands are home to three naval war graves. The HMS Royal Oak is the most well-known of the three. Of the other two war graves, one is located outside of Scapa Flow; the other is north of the oil terminal on Flotta. These ships are the HMS Hampshire and the HMS Vanguard.

Thoroughly enjoyed this episode Kevin. You gave me quite a few laughs. Kirkwall looks like a lovely town. As did Stromness. The blue water in the causeway section was absolutely stunning. You took us on a merry chase out in the countryside, didn’t you? Wondered where you were going to end up eventually. Well, that’s for next week, I guess.

Kevin: as frequently, you've posted an informative and entertaining video -- one thing I noticed, as you were making your sightseeing ride around the Orkneys, was the garbage truck making its rounds -- I had been wondering since the beginning of this series about the absence of any signs of local authority, like police vehicles or the omnipresent water department or code enforcement trucks one sees everywhere in my home area -- was curious if these sorts of activities are kept in the background or if you have just been editing them out of your presentation product...whatever the case, looking forward to the next installment -- Happy New Year!!!

Hey Kevin-so glad you've had such great weather! It's nice that stop sometimes to take it all in.
That woman in the church was a humorless old bag. I wanted to forewarn you about wearing
your helmet at that old church-when I asked if you were going to SkaraBrae- you told me that when
you were visiting an old church you almost got beaned😯. I was wondering about the different water you'd have to deal with on a fishing trawler! It Has to be a Lot safer on the canals! Hope your holidays are Merry & wishing you a safe and HappyNewYear

As with most things, size is relative and perspective is often based on surroundings. The turrets, at 2:16. From inside, does anyone know what they can hold? A chair? A desk? Dining table for 4? A Doll’s house? A flower pot? I am unaware of any turrets similar in scale, in the states. But, that’s an assumption based on what I THINK I see! Can anyone advise with some familiarity?
As always, great video. My curiosity BEGGED me to post this question, lest I forget, but I have not finished the video. If more comments or questions come to mind that I think are of critical importance, I will edit this comment and add more after this spot!
