In the 1950s, The Landseaire was the ultimate go-anywhere adventure machine. Based on a sturdy WWII-era PBY Catalina flying boat and fitted with beds, bathrooms, kitchens and even deployable boats, they were a long-range home in the sky like no other. But what happened? Where did they go and for one family, how did it all end so tragically?

My grandfather flew the PBY during the war as part of the US Navy 3rd Emergency Rescue Squadron. He was part of a small group of Army Air Corps pilots that were loaned to the Navy to fly PBYs because the Navy didn’t have enough multi-engine trained pilots. They hold the distinction of earning both Army and Navy wings.

Great one, Calum. Last PBY I saw was the one that killed my mayor, 24 years ago. I heard about a failed water landing on the radio and went down to watch it on the way home, not knowing at the time that the mayor of Southampton had been killed. I’d gone along to look as I knew my parents had spent a day trip to Le Touquet on that exact aircraft a couple of years earlier when members of its supporting ‘Catalina Society’.

The Millennium Falcon was a cargo vessel first. Not only did it have an internal storage room but its forward facing prongs would latch on to cargo barges for heavier loads.
Lando converted the Falcon into his personal yacht, sacrificing some storage compartments for an expanded captain’s quarters and a walk-in closet and having a luxury escape pod fitted into the cargo prongs.
Also, Corellian starships, no matter what size and class, are known for their rugged reliability and modular design for personal customization.

My grandfather was that hero. The plane only landed in that area due to an engine issue. My uncle was working on the engine when the shooting started. The whole group was held hostage presumed to be spies.
There is quite a bit more to the story, for instance, my grandfather was not the only one shot during that attack. Also, one night while being held, they were awaken in the middle of the night, driven out in a truck to an isolated area, and unloaded by a group of men with rifles. Thankfully, another vehicle showed up in the nick of time with someone appearing important, as my mother described (she is the teenaged girl in some of the photos), and they were loaded up again and taken back to the camp.

Lovely old girl, I have been up in her a couple of times. The hull of a PBY which was 'parts donor' for her ended up down at Classic Flyers in Tauranga, and over a decade ago I was one of the volunteers who dissembled the rear-most part of the fuselage to create an indoor exhibit ... it was quite surreal drilling out all those 1/8" rivets (with the perished remains of rubberised canvas sealing the joints between plates) and thinking this was a Real Catalina I was working on, not the Airfix kit of one which as a kid I had thought was the nearest I would ever get to the real thing.

Never got to see a PBY like this, but as a kid me and my dad passed by a grumman goose moored on a small lake behind a beach house. My dad pulled over and me and him walked over and met the family who owned it. They gave me the full tour. Later on id play uncharted and it was an instant realization that it was the exact flying boat i had been in as a kid. Thanks for another great video

We used to attend the huge annual fly-in and air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in the 80s. One aircraft that attended several of the years we were there was a Catalina that had been converted into a flying luxury yacht with a full bar and a slick black-and-purple paint scheme. You could pay a couple bucks to tour it, or a couple hundred to attend cocktail parties onboard. One late afternoon, we were surprised to see the custom PBY's nose suddenly lift up in the air as the plane stood for several moments on its tail. Shortly, the nose wheel touched down, followed by a stream of sheepish partygoers whose weight in the aft section of the plane had overbalanced it.

I think one of these was at a local airport when I was very young. Mid 70s to early 80s. It was covered and in disrepair. I remember being amazed at it's size and shape but being too young to really appreciate it importance. It sold at some point and disappeared. No idea where it went. I remember people that knew about it saying a local guy owned it and travelled the world in it. They said it had a washer and dryer and said it was basically a flying RV. I'll ask around and see what I can find.

Such a shame there will likely never be another golden age of flight ever again. Creating plane parts is still relatively cheap, but the certification process tenfolds the ticket price over physical cost, and if you aren't the OEM then you may as well forget trying to remanufacture previously discontinued parts

I was going to be a mechanic on a PBY back in the 80's. A friend of mine's dad was trying to get an air taxi service going in the Caribbean. He had found one working PBY, two for parts, a French owned island to lease "will build to suit". Have to have a ramp to get the plane in and out of the water, workshop, living space. Just could never get all the financing together.

Imagine having a luxurious RV that can fly, swim and offer unparalleled speed, range, and capabilites. That shot of the family looking at the pyramids through the tear drop glas canopy - goosebumps! Combine that with the lax airspace control regulations back then - absolutely bonkers.
