Dear Diane, Occasionally I make a comment here. And today I must add how much I have enjoyed your tutorials and personal stories too. You’re such an intuitive artist, thank you for sharing your world and talent.
I doubt that any other artist online accompanies their work with such interesting dialogue! Sheep, dogs, roosters, exploding shower doors... never a dull day!
These are so pretty, all of them. Daisies and any white flower is a little intimidating for me, but you make it look so simply. I will definitely give it a try. Thanks so much for sharing. And, that is really something about your shower door, I have never heard of anything like that happening to anyone before. Thank goodness no one was hurt.
I appreciate that you use all kinds of papers -- in sketchbooks, journals, and other applications. My most important thing is to keep practicing and painting and having fun. I'm with you....keep it simple.
Exactly! If everything I do has to be a masterpiece... I'd never even start! Along with diffrent grades of watercolor paper, I have a Sketchbook for ideas, and a mixed media pad to experiment on. I use it to 'clean' my pallets... that way I don't waste all the little puddles that are left over. ❤😅
I am so very new at learning to paint watercolor and I am enjoying it very much! I enjoy your wit and the easiness in your personality during the tutorials! Thank you for sharing your talent and inspiring countless others like me!
Thanks Amanda, she’s new and just starting so she doesn’t really know the etiquette but I like to offer support - I didn’t get much when we were first starting !!!!!!!!!
Love this sketch❤ the exploding shower door thing happened to my mother, fortunately not while she was in it. I seem to remember all sorts of drama getting it replaced.....with something guaranteed NOT to explode again.
The shattered shower door , yes, this happened to us as well a coupe if years ago. One explenation is tensions in the glass that suddenly becomes too much, another is if you live in a wooden house, the movement of the house could also be the cause. Our wooden house moves depending on time of year (especially in springtime!) and temperature out side. I live in Sweden, there are big differneces in summer and winter temperature, making the wood behave this way.
Yes, Diane. We had a shower door safety glass that burst many years ago mysteriously. I was upstairs and home alone. I went to investigate the noise with no luck. One of our sons found it later. I should have looked behind the slightly opened door to the room. We were fortunate and able to find the exact door from the company. My husband thankfully saves the paperwork for everything. Love the daisies.
Yes, Dianne, I have the same book! Amazing resource, I had it and forgot about it, then remembered I had it! Thank you for this narration. Also YES, it was in 1983 when we were all fast asleep and BOOM our shower door burst into a million pieces! It was quite hard to understand how it could have happened. I think that modern shower doors are shatter proof, so perhaps the one you have was a bit older. Frightening, though! I learned something new from you today letting the combined paints run into the daisy, so THANK YOU!
Constant temperature changes can cause things in the glass to expand over time causing stress on the glass. Then it shatters. These aren’t the technical terms but it tells you why on Google. Very odd though. I dropped my painting water jar last night, so i was clearing glass up at midnight so the cats wouldn’t walk on it. Very pretty paintings. I must get more practice in re’ flowers and leaves. 😊
If we had been going through a heatwave and then it got cold I could have understood it perhaps. But our bathroom is pretty stable temperature wise and we don’t use a lot of heat or very hot water, so I rather think it must be an age related condition!
I tried your daisies and my first background. I forgot to highlight daisies from the center, so mine are just white. Thank you for showing how. It gave me the courage to give it a try. I love watching you paint and hearing your experiences. That is wild about your shower!
I love those daisies and the technique! I will give that a try with simple drawings (I dislike drawing, hoping to learn to like because I'm sure it will be needful for me eventually? lol) for practice. I like those simple backgrounds. Thanks so much for sharing this. :)
I have a tiny bathroom, and am of an age when getting in and out of the bath is proving difficult. I have decided to replace the bath with a shower cubicle, but it will need a door, otherwise the whole room will be soaked. Will chat to the fitter to ask him if he has heard of this. Glad you are all ok but scary! Beautiful daisies, I love, them. Thank you.
Yes, that’s a good idea. There are types of glass that don’t explode into little pieces when they break, I imagine that you could request that you have that type of glass, or maybe better still an acrylic glass substitute, that’s what I’m going to do, as I don’t want to have that happening again. Not funny, especially the way the metal parts flew across the room, and the glass powder left everywhere!
Hi Diane! This is such a wonderful video! I love Daisies and I love your painting of them with the background and the ink work on them. I have never heard of a glass shower door shattering like that..wow!!! That must have been a shock! Thankfully nobody was there when it happened. You "literally" made me laugh today! Thank you 😊
Hello Diane! What a lovely piece on the daisies! I especially love how the painting of the negative space adds so much to the overall look. Your creations are always so lovely. P.S. Thank you for the mention, as I just started my channel a few weeks ago.😃
Diane, I love this tutorial demonstrating how to create backgrounds. The daisies are perfect timing since I'll be painting my sister's birthday card soon and they are her favorite flower. In fact, before this latest tutorial I was referencing your other daisy videos. Your bird paintings are so pretty. Sorry to hear about your shower door but so thankful no one was using it when that happened. Imagine how terrifying that would be! Thanks for the special treat of seeing your wild birds so happily feeding.
Thanks so much Carolyn, so glad you’re finding the videos still to be helpful! Yes, the shower door incident was very very strange, almost as strange as the expression on my husbands face as he struggled to find words to tell me what had happened !!! The moment you really wish you had a camera in your hand!!!
I like your videos cause you are perfectly imperfect, and you also paint a little fast. That’s how I paint. You are so easy to follow. Love, love, love this. I’m gonna try it.
Thank you so much 😀 and yes, I do tend to get stuck in and paint quickly, unlike many of the other creators online… glad it suits your temperament too!
I’m not a big believer in in ghosts but I have literally always thought that there was a poltergeist in this house where I have lived for 20 years. This is not the first time something weird and inexplicable has happened, although I think this is the most dramatic. Very alarming!
My 339 th. 😊 you always come up with new stories or products, never boring. I certainly will give this one a go. Thanks for sharing and keeping up the good spirit.😊wim
This is so fresh and lovely! I am always timid about backgrounds. I usually paint the subject and then I am concerned about ruining my work with a background. I’m going to try painting it first like you did. The nuthatch you painted in your journal is gorgeous. I love those little characters and the sounds they make. Please revisit that painting. I would love to see it again. Thanks for sharing the book about drawing birds. I have a friend who would love it and I think I will get for her!
Thanks so much, Amanda for your lovely message! I know that feeling about not wanting to ruin a painting with a bad background. But nowadays we are allowed to do a less than regular wash and pretty much however we like is good! I thought it was a good idea to do the background first because the flower was meant to be on the white side. It didn’t end up being very white in the end but you have to go with the flow! And yes, I will go back to the nuthatch and finish him off with a background to keep him happy!
Ooh those came out great! I am so bad at adding background in watercolor. I sometimes do videos called "Let's try it" on my channel, where I attempt to follow a tutorial. I always give credit to the youtuber who did the tutorial and put in links to their tutorial as well. Is it OK if I try this one day? I am working on an acrylic painting for my cousin right now, but when I'm done I'd love to try this. I'm so glad nobody was hurt when your shower door exploded.
So one night we were sitting in our living room & heard a popping sound. We went to the kitchen to investigate & found that our glass range top exploded. I had not cooked on it & it was about 10 years old. Cleaned up & moved on but never understood the why behind the eruption. Love your tutorials & the sounds of your home. Thank you.
Oh my goodness! What is it with this glass thing! Was that relatively recent? I’m wondering whether it’s anything to do with the satellites and the 5G or who knows what electromagnetism and stuff.
@@DianeAntoneStudio It wasn't a recent event and unlike yours our glass was all contained within the frame of the range top. We never found out why it happened but I got a new cooktop because of it but picked stainless!!
Actually we had one of our glass door panels that encloses our bath tub explode and of course the glass shattered into a million pieces. My husband, who is handicapped uses that bathroom, luckily it happened very very early in the morning. We just moved here a year ago and never used that bathtub. But it was the original glass panel which was 28 years old. We never heard of that before. We live in the USA. By the way just love your videos thanks for taking the time to do them.
Diane, Your leaves are always dynamite. I love them. I have to get back to practicing them all because I've taken a rather long hiatus after 2 years of unfortunate circumstances with breaking bones. I know it sounds awful and was, but i feel tiptop now and raring to go. I love watching you paint and the cute little waterpaper books you find--such a variety which is exactly what I do. I recently got 2 5X7 sketch books that I think will be fine for watercolor if I don't use much water. I also have paint sets that I haven't even used yet: 2 Kuretake sets (the same 2 you got at the time). I also have Mei Lang andWhale art, Meedan like yours, Arch's, and Strathmore and Canson. I'm having fun working on a my first big journal in the theme of Forest's, my favorite place to be and smell. Anyway, you inspire me a great deal and I'm always grateful for your tutelage. Thank you, Diane. I'm going to join Patreon today. Love and Light to you. XOXOJANE
Hi Jane, thanks so much for your lovely comments and your wonderful message! I am so glad to hear that you are feeling much better now and are keen to get started with painting! The idea of a forest journal is a brilliant one! I’ve just started a new sketchbook and the first thing I’ve put in it is a landscape of mountains and I think I’m going to use it for similar forest paintings - mountains, forests, trees and so on. I’m so grateful for your support and I hope you enjoy being a member of Patreon. We are planning to add some new features soon so it will be getting even better! Sending you lots of good wishes for your painting journey! Diane xxx
Hi Diane, While a college student, the bathroom down the hall had a new glass shower door that exploded shortly after being installed. It was a loud bang followed by glass everywhere. The cause was stresses on the glass that were not equal.
Yes, I’ve heard that is a possibility. Tamsin, my daughter, thinks we had a visit from a ghost who used to be an opera singer who hit a high note in the bathroom! Don’t miss tonight’s video! ua-cam.com/video/1ZMjmQ00-r8/v-deo.htmlsi=JKh2S3Oxr3wRxqQf
Glass is more fickle than people realise. All it takes is a slight imperfection in the glass....it can last years before fatigue will cause it to break. It shattered because it was designed to shatter as it is less dangerous than standard glass. The painting is beautiful
Great way to do the background! I like it. The flowers are lovely as well. Very odd happening in your bathroom. Is it extremely hot there, might have caused the glass to shatter.
Right, the shower door! I have never heard of that, and I would have been thrown into a tizzy immediately thinking it was a supernatural occurrence. 😂 Likely, there is some practical explanation.
I can’t find any logical reason for it, and I have always thought there was a poltergeist in this house as so many slightly weird things have happened over the 20 years I’ve lived here. It is a house built by the Nazis in the war and I’m pretty sure it has a sad story behind it which I wasn’t aware of until after I’d bought it. So it’s not impossible that there is a ghost - if there are such things, which I don’t know …. So strange! And scary!
Thank you for this daisy demo. I'm always thinking 'outside the box' and thought your technique of having the paint spread from the center to the petals might be used to create shadows on any subject. ?
That happened to me a few years ago after my dad past. I thought it was some message from the grave. My other thought is that the frame had a pressure on it suchthat it fell to the overall pressure from all sides.
Yes, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it was a message from the other side. This particular shower door did not have any reason to explode. It wasn’t under any pressure from any fixings. It was just one of those ones that hangs from a relatively loose press-on Hinge thing. No cracks and no ill treatment! We did not do anything to deserve this event! However, the last couple of days have seen lot of activity in the house Next Door from where the neighbours are moving out. The actual owner died in a rather unfortunate way a couple of years ago and if you believe in that kind of thing I could imagine he was putting out a lot of bad energy at the moment. I’m not sure if I believe in that kind of thing, but I do wonder sometimes, it’s not the first time something like that has happened here. Who knows!
@@DianeAntoneStudio Well, I was stressed at the time. Any sign would have been good, so I attached that. Sounds like your was like ours. Kinda like trying to get detailed information from a cat at this point, huh?!
I love these! Diane, do you find some of the fineliners are more hearty than others? Regardless of care, the cold press paper texture tears up my smaller Micron nibs.
Diane, you won’t believe this but our news just had a story about exploding shower doors. It’s a fairly rare phenomenon but the expert on the news knew of at 30 instances. Cause is usually a very small defect in the glass or problem with installation. Perhaps if you check with the installer….?
How amazing! Were they saying that it seem to be getting more common? I think it might be electromagnetic radiation! I’m afraid the person who installed our shower is no longer with us but wouldn’t think it was that anyway - we will never know!
Spooky. I can relate. A couple of weeks ago a shelf I the kitchen came down and a large saucepan went to the floor. It was a clip fitting shelf and not broken. Luckily my husband was the other side of the kitchen. Next day I want into the area by the front door and the stick in how, had tipped forward, coats on the floor. The hook easi.y pushed back and is ok now. Loo,kedup to see if there had been a minor earth tremor but couldn't find anything Real,y ,ike your work have tried a few. ,especially painting
It really is funny how these things happen isn’t it Linda. We had a shelf come off the wall in my utility room too not that long ago. It hadn’t given any indication of being loose! I wish these things would give you some warning!
I did the daisies and they came out quite well although I had to redo my drawing due to my lack of ability to do the background. I learned from you how to do the background and the drawing was okay except I did not have the permanent rose but bright rose. Needless to say the colors were not as pretty as yours. I think I shall order a permanent rose and a sepia pen. Thanks for a great evening. PS We had a similar experience as you with a large mirror crashing down into a million pieces.
The background you did really added to the final painting. Do you think you had some subtle earthquake or other house shaking? What a real mystery! Glad no one was in the room when that happened!!!
Thank you, Diane! The daisies were pretty easy and going around the edges really added a lot. And by doing the background early in the lesson gave me a different experience and was actually fun to do!
My shower glass has not exploded, but, especially on cold nights I have been heard a popping sound. I guess the glass is expanding and/or contracting. Great! I more thing to be worried about. Love your daises, thank you!
I love backgrounds. I believe that it adds interest & anchors the panting. Your birds came out very nice. And I love your wild flower painting notebook - so pretty.
Wow - how weird that your shower enclosure decided to self-destruct in the middle of the night! Never heard of that before. This daisy painting is very effective - I'll have to give it a try. 🙂
❤ this! Diane, I’m sorry to hear about your shower door incident. I’m glad no one was hurt. There is info on the web about these occurrences. One being a slight crack from a screw and various other things
A number of years ago, we also had a glass shower door shatter in the middle of the night. The shower was near our bedroom and startled us awake. We were shocked this could happen and ‘what a mess’ !
@@DianeAntoneStudio mine broke into cubes. Glass has a memory and is fluid. I was told that if one area shifts it will cause stress and as a safety it will shatter into cubes. First one was when other half was in shower. They were not cut but lost a few years from shock 🤣
It was so refreshing to hear how you settled the situation with the person who forgot to give you credit. It is always better to deal kindly rather than with anger. You’ve made a friend rather than an enemy. A lesson for the world these days. I love your channel ! Thank you for all you do.
Thank you for sharing these tips. I never know how to go about adding a background so this is very helpful. I really like how your painting turned out. So scary about the glass shower door. As you said, thankfully no one was in there at the time. I have heard of glass oven doors doing that, but never a shower. Glad you guys were not hurt.
Love this daisy video, Diane! Thank you! I had a tempered glass bathroom scale do that a while back (no, I wasn't standing on it😉😂). No one was in the bathroom and we heard a loud explosion. I did a little research and learned that tempered glass can do that, even after many years of good service. A friend had it happen to the sunroof of her car while she was driving! Thankfully she had the interior cover closed at the time but it was quite disconcerting nonetheless. So glad no one was in your bathroom when it happened!

So happy and Summer like!
Glass is more fickle than people realise. All it takes is a slight imperfection in the glass....it can last years before fatigue will cause it to break. It shattered because it was designed to shatter as it is less dangerous than standard glass. The painting is beautiful
I’ll go for acrylic next time!
So strange! And scary!
Thanks
Thanks so much for your generosity!
Thank you for this daisy demo. I'm always thinking 'outside the box' and thought your technique of having the paint spread from the center to the petals might be used to create shadows on any subject. ?
Look so easy.Iwill practice. My sister woke up in middle of the night with a bang, her end table exploded.Thankyou
My goodness! We need to be careful about using glass furniture!
Yes, our shower door mysteriously broke into many tiny pieces. Hubby thought it was due to pressure within a too tight door frame.
Follow your intuition
Yes, I think that’s probably going to happen. I tend to use hot pressed paper if I want to do finer lines but not always…
I'm wondering if this is why we study the color wheel, so. The color pops.
Yes, opposites give the effect of making things “pop”!
Loo,kedup to see if there had been a minor earth tremor but couldn't find anything
Real,y ,ike your work have tried a few. ,especially painting
It really is funny how these things happen isn’t it Linda. We had a shelf come off the wall in my utility room too not that long ago. It hadn’t given any indication of being loose! I wish these things would give you some warning!
I don't mind "literally" 😉
Our oven door spontaneously exploded during the night last year, glass al over the kitchen floor, no idea why or what caused it
YIKES! This common use of glass is hazardous it seems!
I live in a Retirement Village in Australia and 13 showers doors have shattered for no reason. All the doors were over10 years old
Ah, now that’s really interesting! Mine is probably about 12 years old. Hmmmm!
@@DianeAntoneStudio we had ours replaced under our building insurance. It turned out that the glass thickness was too thin. Not up to building code
🥰👍👍👍💕💕💕🇩🇰
The background you did really added to the final painting. Do you think you had some subtle earthquake or other house shaking? What a real mystery! Glad no one was in the room when that happened!!!
We have had earth tremors here recently but I don’t know… it’s a mystery !!
I saw it happen in a fairly new shower in a chateau in France...just out if no where,,😮
Thank you, Diane! The daisies were pretty easy and going around the edges really added a lot. And by doing the background early in the lesson gave me a different experience and was actually fun to do!
That’s scary. We have huge shower doors. Hate to think of that happening. Weird.
Yes, it’s a bit of a worry. Yet another thing xxx
My shower glass has not exploded, but, especially on cold nights I have been heard a popping sound. I guess the glass is expanding and/or contracting. Great! I more thing to be worried about. Love your daises, thank you!
Could be, and yes, as if we needed something else to worry about!
Thanks for this- going to try it out now! Oh, and ... angry spirit.
these look gorgeous 😊😊
Thank you! 😊
I love backgrounds. I believe that it adds interest & anchors the panting.
Your birds came out very nice. And I love your wild flower painting notebook - so pretty.
Thank you so much!
Wow - how weird that your shower enclosure decided to self-destruct in the middle of the night! Never heard of that before. This daisy painting is very effective - I'll have to give it a try. 🙂
Definitely weird. I don’t know what to make of it really Karen!
You make this look so easy....
Very pretty, I love the simplicity of daisies. So fresh and pretty! ❤
Thank you! 😊
❤ this! Diane, I’m sorry to hear about your shower door incident. I’m glad no one was hurt. There is info on the web about these occurrences. One being a slight crack from a screw and various other things
Yes, there must be some explanation. I don’t think there was a crack, but maybe it’s age related!
A number of years ago, we also had a glass shower door shatter in the middle of the night. The shower was near our bedroom and startled us awake. We were shocked this could happen and ‘what a mess’ !
Yes, it certainly was a mess! Isn’t it strange!
Yes have had that happen twice in two different homes with shower screens
Really? So it’s not all that rare!
@@DianeAntoneStudio mine broke into cubes. Glass has a memory and is fluid. I was told that if one area shifts it will cause stress and as a safety it will shatter into cubes. First one was when other half was in shower. They were not cut but lost a few years from shock 🤣
Thank you for your guidance. I'm trying HARD to work more freely, quickly, etc. I'm too much into perfection. 🤦♀️
