    Tony Currie on fine form here. I don’t think any other CA would promote one hour and forty minutes of a testcard on a Sunday morning...

      Dunno about that. If the alternative was The Big Questions with Nicky Campbell, gimme the testcard any day of the week.

    Smiley advert has John Grieg and Berti Auld in very brief cameos. Never noticed that back in the day

    "Incidentally if you are keen we will start showing the test card at 5.15 in the morning"
    Italian TV did that at about 9am (as Italians believe) after showing ½h of blank screen, static would start 15m of blank screen after closedown (and showing for about three minutes the time of returning on the air so it's 18m after closedown after all) and programming started at 12.30pm (at that time).
    Thank god there's no sign off (even though it became a monthly thing to sign off for the 0330-0700 time zone) (BBC three and four don't count)

    Wow, I thought the This-Morning theme-like music began with the Bertie Bassett era!

    I'm not sure I believe his claim that he was sitting out in his back garden at 5am that morning. 1985 was a miserable wet summer.

      1984, the year of the miners strike, now that was a scorched. That's how folk remember 1985 by comparison, cold and wet. In other words Dreich.

      @@stephenroney3630 In our family we have a succession of birthdays throughout the summer, including my own in June so the weather for each year is always linked in my mind with either outdoor/indoor/holiday birthdays. For the record, on my birthday in 1985 we were on holiday in Blackpool, staring out of a caravan at sheets of rain and wind. And I agree about '84 because we were at the same resort the previous year on the same date and it was scorching hot, that was part of the reason why we went again.

    That Trio candy bar commercial has a resemblance to Stan Freberg's "Banana Boat Song" parody of Harry Belafonte's "Day O," where in the course of recording the song the beatnik bongo drum player (played by Peter Leeds) is constantly complaining that Freberg's singer is way too loud (despite the singer insisting that it is "authentic calypso"), finally demanding that Freberg sing the chorus outside of the studio, which leads to:
    SINGER (as we hear sounds of trying to open a locked door): I can't get back in there!
    BONGO PLAYER: Crazy. (as in beatnik sign of approval, like "crazy, man, crazy")

    • @MakerfieldConsort
      @MakerfieldConsort Рік тому

      I recall that at the time, Stan Freberg's parody was enjoying renewed popularity thanks to getting airtime on Radio Two, so it's not surprising that some advertiser would parody the parody.
