- I'm playing a great Bogner Alchemist 40W 2x12 comco using a Gibson Les Paul and a Fender Telecaster. It's got a Celestion G12M25 Greenback resissue and a G12H30 Anniversary speaker in it.
Bought one and returned it back in the day, just wasn’t my cuppa. Wound up with a Top Hat Super Deluxe.
OMG i remember loving these when they came out, especially with humbuckers. Forgot all about them! They sound great!
Cheers Giulio!
A friend had a Line 6 Spider Valve that I got to play thru. Great sounding amp. Anything with Bogner on it sounds good. Loved your riffage as always. God bless and rock on 👍😎🎸
Thanks man, glad to hear it!
One of my favorite amps! It’s different from the rest, that’s why it's not everyone’s cup of tea.
It’s not the hot rot Plexi type Bogner that some want it to be - different schematic, far from a Super Lead or a JCM800. You have to approach it as it’s own thing, or you’ll be disappointed.
IMHO, the 2nd channel benefits a lot from adding a bright cap over the gain pot. One can also easily add a presence knob to the power amp.
@stefanwerner5799 What do you think it is that give the clean channel such three dimensional hi-fi clarity, presence, and depth? To my ear It sounds very different from most of my other mass produced amps which i would describe as "warmer, duller and less transparent". I've played other more expensive and boutique style amps with this 3D clean quality. I can't read schematics or draw conclusions from them (yet) but have been curious about this for a while. Some have suggested to me that it's the transformers, others say its the component choices. Would be curious to hear your take. Appreciate any insight you have!
I have the separate 2x12 Alchemist cabinet, which came stock with the G12H Anniversary and Greenbacks, its great. BTW the G12H Anniversary is a GREAT replacement for the Greenbacks in a Vox Ac15 - handles the gain much better I didn't find the actual Alchemist amp particular inspiring when I played it, but the oversized 2x12 is a keeper.
It’s a really big sounding 2x12
Reinhold Bogner is a mad scientist genius!
He is indeed! 🤘👑
Sounds amazing with that Les Paul. I like the sounds you get from that Tele also. The Tele always surprises me, I've only recently started playing them, being mostly a Les Paul and Stratocaster player, the Tele is really good. The amp sounds versatile, nice matching of speakers.
Thanks Michael!
That delay souded awesome too!
Thanks Jeff, yeah it’s got a great built in delay
@@JohanSegebornAnd stereo too, if my ears aren’t deceiving me 🙂
I just remembered the Bogner modded Super that you once demoed...
Cool built-in delay in the Alchemist.
Thanks! Yeah that one was a killer
I really like those sounds. Smooth mids, but not too smooth. It seems like the Alchemist would sound good for all kinds of music.
Thanks! Yeah really versatile
I was hoping you would review one of these and the tone gods must’ve heard my prayers. Currently have 5 of these amplifiers.
The clean channel is allegedly based on the Dumble, and the overdrive channel is supposedly a plexi. The 2x12 speaker combination is magical In the vintage 30 and the 112 combo is a good compromise. One of the most underrated and misunderstood amplifiers of all time.
Thanks Jon
The clean channel has a dumble tone stack. OD channel is far from a plexi - no cathode follower, 40k cold clipper.
@@stefanwerner5799 Great info, thank you! I think I picked up the Plexi rumor from reading about the first iterations of the amp when it was called just called the "AV-CALI" and a video where he describes the half power switch as a sag/variac type effect in the context of discussing the 2nd channel producing EVH type sounds. (I need to double check that second citation.)
@@jonoftheford The power reduction is reducing the voltage, so except for the heaters, it's pretty much the same as running an amp on a variac. Reinhold used the words "brown sound" to describe the dynamic changes, but I'm not sure it was intended to recreate the 1:1 EVH sound.
AV-Cali may or may not be a reference to Californian amp makers like Fender, Mesa/Boogie, Soldano or Dumble. The cold clipper in the gain channel is the same as in a SLO-100, for example.
They seem to have a lot of problems but I always wanted to try one. Sounds very cool
Thanks, glad to hear it
Are those speakers stock ? The riffs on the les paul we’re freaking sick man. The little 3 note shell chord movement was beautiful.
Thanks Dan! I think they are.
The Spider Valve by Line 6 is basically the same amp, and tbh was probably passed on because "lol its a Line 6 Spider."
Taylor Danley did a great video showing you how many knobs do very different things from what the front panel suggests, depending upon the model selected.
This is why these amps are polarizing - powerful, but, not necessarily intuitive.
Worth your time if interested! Great sounds as always, Johan.
Thanks! I’m gonna check it out
spider are pods with tube power amp, this is a full tube amp with Digital fx in the loop
@@MrAletube did Bogner design the pod? You don't know what you're talking about. Literally says BOGNER DESIGNED on the front panel.
@@rocketpigrecords3719 the spider preamp was all digital Line6,i know amps because i work on them, the Alchemist has digital fx by line6 only in the fx loop,i also have schematics, chill out man
@@MrAletubesorry for being aggressively wrong lol, related but not the same
That delay is killer! Is it built in?
Thanks! It is actually
These are really great amps on a budget. I was really close to getting one until I found a mesa express for $100 more I couldn't pass up.
Aloha Johan! So many amps to keep an eye out for😂
I like the amplifier sounds but having worked on a few of them over the years I am Leary of the transformers. Power and output. But hey great value. Hard to repair. Aloha from Hawaii. Darrell
Aloha!
Hi, Johan!
I want that metal dream to my studio! Is it hard to find and how much expensive this killer? Just cant stop to watch it back! Have a nice weekend! With this amp it must be great! Really overdrive monster amp!
S.
Thanks man, I think they’re not that rare. Have a great weekend my friend!
how heavy is that thing? you sound great as always
Thanks, it’s a solid piece of gear for sure
Very nice Johan. But if you had to choose, Bassman or Bogner?
Thanks! Very few things beats Bassman
Go Johan 💪💪💪💪
Cheers Pablo!
The Alchemist:It can turn noise into MUSIC! \m/
I think this is first time I've seen Celestions with heavey magnets on your channel.
I usually play G12M indeed but many videos feature G12H or 4x12 model 1982 especially in earlier videos
Johan,
You get amazing tones out of every amp you play. Did you know that?
Thanks my friend
Can't believe that delay is built in
Yeah that’s a great delay
Beautiful. I wish I could afford Bogner’s gear. 😢
He doesn’t own a lot of the stuff he demos. He borrows a lot of stuff from people he knows to demo it. Sure, he has stated he owns some Marshalls and a couple vintage cabs with Greenbacks. But a lot of this stuff doesn’t belong to him. At least thats what he has suggested before.
@@kevinmurtagh4996 Thanks. But I already know that. Let me clarify, I wish I could afford Bogner’s gear. I corrected it above.
@@ChaosAttractor13 Me too! 😆
You can afford this one. There’s one selling local to me for 450 usd for the head version.
This amp regularly sells for less than $500. There are 12 used listed on the GC site as of this writing at or under this price..
My bandmate had this amp, but he traded it for a guitar because it weighed so much. It's definitely not a gigging-friendly amp.
Yeah this format as well as Fender 4x10 requires you to lift the box higher than you would a 2x12, to get it if the ground
The head and cab version makes transport way easier.
Les Paul friendly amp😂😂😂
Thanks! I really liked it with the Tele too
I had this amp, the sound is fine-ish, kinda boomy, too smooth. But the feel is what threw me off, feels unnatural to say the least.
I does feel different indeed
Surely a good sounding amp but it is famous because of its unreliability. Many of them had various technical issues...what a shame!
I’ve had a few of these amps on my bench: the specialty here is that all the internal switching runs off the same power rail as the tube heaters. Bad tubes that suck too much power can cause a voltage drop that makes the control circuitry misbehave. Before you declare one of the amp to be defective, try a fresh set of tubes.
