- We've seen stuff like this before, but Sony has really taken a new (and potentially awesome) approach to the "projected touch screen" idea...

This reminds me of that kickstarter scam project where they took everyones money and promised something like this built into a watch.
Gadget Addict same I never knew this tech existed I thought it was Facebook bullshit and scams haha
That project is pretty much still alive and stealing money from gullible people that think you can project the color black, and outshine the sun with a bracelet powered LED
Gadget Addict ikr 😱
Gadget Addict I saw it on YT abd u thought omg that's freaking cool but then oh it's a concept 😑
It was called the "Cicret Bracelet".
Captain Disillusion did a really good video on it.
video should be titled, "Tech you never knew you needed"
TanDck MahT1mbo You rich people and your "flat surfaces" not everyone can afford the secondary cost like you
/s
Fatigued If I didn't hurt to breathe I'd lmao.
TanDck MahT1mbo same I want one so bad
TheD For cooking, this could create a new aspect. for sizing dough, to cooking along side. literately Gordon Ramsay etc. no mess, no fuss.
TanDck MahT1mbo yeah cooking along side it would make things so easy
If this releases at a $200 or less price point I'd definitely pick one up.
EDIT: I'm not saying "This will probably be $150 at launch." There's no way I'd expect that. I'm saying "This is cool, but unless it's severely underpriced most people won't buy one."
BtheDestroyer Certainly not, it will be around $800 i guess
BtheDestroyer it's sony being optimistic, at least 600 bucks
It'll be that price if it was just the projecter, but since this is an actual device running Android within itself, it'll be probably flagship smartphone range.
Sony doesn't do that whole "affordable" thing.
Sony can't even do cheap smartphone.
no rgb lighting = oldschool
guess what, a projector adds rbg lighting to your wall
and the lighting quality is 240p
vRytex so... is your RGB strip quality 1440p
RGB everything dammit!
vRytex wait for RGB stand off and screws and screw driver.
OH MY GOD THAT LATENCY 2:37
Honestly this is the one product I've seen so far that i might buy.
Tracing pictures would be really easy on this
Oh yea
I could see a thousand use cases. A few are below
1- Virtual tabletops: I could easily see a 4k or 8k version of this hanging from my wall and projecting over my entire table, giving me a virtual space for everything from virtual board games to miniature tabletop game mats to DnD maps.
2- Builder's Aid: shine this onto a workbench and you have everything from woodworking blueprints to a blown-out diagram of a gun you're cleaning. You could easily create little "zones" to help organize your bench during a project, too. The ability to zoom and move around a diagram is promising too.
3- Digital Canvas: Put this on a large canvas like surface and use it to trace images or something like that. Maybe a canvas accessory that works as a giant drawing pad? Or compatibility with, say, the Surface Dial or something similar as well?
4- Smart Surface: Put it literally anywhere you want an augmented surface.
Sounds like a great device for porn. No need to get your tablet dirty. xD
who the fuck used their tablet, VR is where it's at man, totally hands free.
DanielRichards644 that is true, but how would u keep an eye out to see if anyone's going to walk in on you.
Sunny Wu it's been a long time since I've been in a bathroom without a lock
+Berzerk TD4W you're gonna vr in the bathroom? lmfao
why not? just pop your phone into a Google Cardboard and your good!
this is probably the best thing I've seen out of CES so far...
Great for a small business for a conference call, presentation to a customer at their location. I can see all sorts of uses for this. The extra features that it can be used for fun and productivity so easily may sell it to a small business owner who can dual-use it for work and play.
This is one of my favorites so far this CES. This is the kind of thing that could be perceived as magic a hundred years ago, a mysterious box that can produce windows to other worlds.
You must be living in 15 century my old friend
I love it, for the kitchen I don't use my phone or computer for looking how to prepare something, but more as a media player or to browse the web while I'm on it.
this is what I've been waiting for lol
I got my kitchen laid out so I'm looking at the TV when I'm cooking.
Let's get a price expectation discussion going! I personally haven't got the faintest idea what it could be.
$1000-1300 maybe? Sounds reasonable
$499 is the sweet spot but if the projector is expensive they might be targeting more like $799
+Larry $800? Depending on specs, your buying a flagship android device + projector
With there being another device that they would be somewhat competing with, they might price it at about 700 dollars since this seems to be better than that with a few features more
Depends on the internal specs. If it's just a mid range android device (which honestly is all it needs to be) then maybe 500-600 on the low end but if it's a flagship level device inside it could easily cross the 1000 dollar mark and beyond.
This seems like it would be really cool to use as a secondary or third monitor for a PC where you can use it to adjust volume or sliders for content creators like for video, music, or even pictures
The first thing that is actually somewhat cool that I've seen during the CES coverage
when he said OK Google mine went off
starcow12345 oddly enough I did
u r linus but u no no it yet
so you have the voice of a teenager girl?
Is it an Android device in and of itself, or rather an extension of your phone/tablet?
I think it runs independently
Looks to be an independent device
it is an independent device, this was show sometime before as well.
something similar hanging from the ceiling or so in the kitchen would be awesome actually. love the idea of this thing
This is actually pretty cool. I could see this being a device a good thing to have on the kitchen table if it's near the wall
that's pretty cool. how come no one did a review on this yet.
because linus is uptodate
most of the stuff at CES has not come out yet
YourTechGuide that's cuz it just released
It hasn't been released - that's why they still don't know what the battery life will be like.
2:28 *KNACK IS BACK BABYYYYY A MASTAPIECE!*
so far the only USEFUL product linus covered in CES this year..
Saw this at the Shape ATT Expo last summer. It ties in with a whole plethora of other planned Sony Home stuff.
1:57 What is that app? Looks awesome
yeah that look cool
I want in on this too
i have found it, @ playstore Justice vs Evil!
Cheers for this man ^
Specs? You don't need to ask Sony for that, just sideload CPU-Z.
Henry Ly they can find the specs of that specific device. but that device isn't the finished product consumers would buy. the specs of that could be xyz. but in the finished product they might be ABC. hence why Sony isn't telling specs. it could change.
As you mentioned in the video, this is actually pretty cool to use when you are eating. I like to watch something while i'm eating in the kitchen and I keep dropping food over my phone and it sucks so this is perfect.
this is insane dood. I can't wait until these evolve and become more powerful
This is the future of classroom white boards! Wow Sony and thanks Linus for this!
I would use this to play chess with someone.
3D chess would be cool
Lmao!!
This strikes me as a solid alternative to bringing a notebook PC or iPad on a work trip. If all you need is basic web browsing and watching TV/movies in your hotel room, you could bring this instead. As someone who mostly relies on his smartphone during such trips, I could see myself buying it for that purpose, especially if they shrank it down a bit and let you re-scale the screen.
I see this as a potential smart wall. kind of like smart mirrors that I have thought about putting together. but this is cleaner, easier and more portable. I would like to see it support gestures too.
Need a bluetooth keyboard version. This plus phone = easy on the go writing.
Maybe build this into a phone.
Lololol
Raise your hands if your Ok Google Got Triggered at 0:42
I think you didn't understand the comment
Samarth Kambli actually mine is active only on my Launcher "Thanks to Nova launcher" really I can't leave ot active on any screen because I have too much friends who are retarded and would say OK Google just to interrupt my phone.
my didn't because i use headphones :D
Can't you set it to only respond to your voice?
DrToonhattan yes but some of our douchebags s found the way to sound just like me
That is by far the coolest thing at CES this year!!
that is crazy cool. I want this feature on my galaxy note 10 when it comes out and makes its hopefully less flamable come back
The Future:
White tables everywhere...
"...in a dorm..."
Somehow I think this is a *little* out of the price range of anyone living in a dorm.
I don't know if I would actually buy this device itself, but it gets me excited for the near future. I would love to have several of these seamlessly built in to many surfaces or areas of the house. One in the kitchen for morning news, weather, and recipes; one or even several on coffee tables or end tables in the living room; heck, even one in the bathroom for...anyways, I'd want one built in anywhere it might be useful that I don't want to drag a laptop or tablet, or didn't want one to get dirty. The key to me would be built in for a clean interface and "smart home" feel. I can see appeal of having a portable unit though that you could grab and project anywhere, or of course for dorms or travel. Coolest thing I've seen from CES so far.
you can use this for a 1 for one Lego tutorial for children. it lays out blocks in segments on the screen and when you have all the blocks or any other way it moves on allowing the children for hands on learning. same could be said for disabled children.
I think for school presentations it can be usefull!
tape it to my ceiling so i can watch movies while laying down
or watch other things ;)
Would not a regular projector be better for that? and a lot cheaper.
Niiiice. I was about to ask about putting it on a wall until I saw that part of the video. Very awesome. I could see myself getting this for a wall remote for my Chromecast
Wonderful Innovation from Sony. Hats off to them. By the way, what is the price?
I want this,
But with Windows.
I saw this in the movie called "The Island"
"high tech stuff"
Nayrisian
I recalled the scene where somebody main char (the original) had this "high tech phone" with a projector screen (I forget if its on the wall, or a table surface.)
Loved that movie. Thanks for reminding me i will go watch it again.
Nayrisian
Definitely! I can't help but wonder if its better to clone livestock, or breed then (to be better, as we have been doing)
reminds me of the old 90s tech about the digital desk which also featured multi touch long before it was a thing on the iphone an android.
I love this product idea. My first thought was for the kitchen as a recipe and family message centre, but yeah, there are lots of interesting uses. A family movie night in the backyard? Hiding from my family by projecting a picture of the wall over myself? My only reservation is the form factor. For the kitchen, a wall-mountable solution might be better, right where the landline phone used to hang. In other scenarios it might be better to have a wider base for stability. Also, ruggedized? Battery pack?
This is going to cost an absolute fortune
Around $500-800, not an absolute fortune. Price over time might come down to $300-400.
yes it is , 1300 pound in uk
3k
KNACK 2 BABYY
this video is very best
Living in an RV and have been looking into small short throw projectors to replace my LCD monitors. Having android on it makes me wonder about using it as a control device for systems as well as a general purpose web browsing device. Portability and ruggedness over an LCD monitor are also selling points for my application.
Most exciting thing I see from the coverage.
Where the RGB at?
System
Monitor
TheLegend27 says if you're early Linus will reply...
Just kidding there's no fucking way he'll reply.
conor reilly ha
Never knew knew it till now, but I have always wanted this!
this is a lot more cool and a lot less gimmicky than the title and thumbnail suggested!
Make it for $29.99 and I buy it.
make it for $2 and I'll buy it
ok grandpa ;-P
I think you're dreaming a little too hard
Get the pricing right Sony and I'm buying this! Say about $100 seems right.
$300 seems more fair, keep in mind this is an entire android device, not just a projector.
Tech Guy Charlie You people are delusional
its likely going to be a grand at least. however sony will probably be able to bring the cost down quickly. keep in mind projectors cant cost alot, especially if you want one that wont require changing the bulbs every couple years.
I fucking laughed my ass off when I saw the $1700 MSRP. What a joke.
root i am wondering what have you done when you heard about the price of the iPhone x.
This is actually pretty cool. Lately been trying a lot of new recipes so this could definitely come in handy for that. I could also just sit in bed and watch a movie when I feel like it. Very nice stuff.
Martin Lawliet Imagine if it could project size measurements near the food you're working with?
***** Now that would be fantastic.
I'd buy it, could see a use in conference and power point presentations

Just two words: portable porn .
Kal El time for PP
Kal El You know you have a smartphone right???
Wait, you can watch porn on a smartphone!?!?
My whole life has changed
Kal El Now you can jizz all over the video itself.
Waldo OMG ITS WALDO!!!!
this is the perfect platform for demo beta apps, as a developer first thing pop in my head. As businessman I can make this into an mini arcade for restaurant tables as people wait for their food. this has multiple more but those were the first 2 two things pop'd in my head.
Provided the device has proper internal filtration of dust and such, this would make a great device for use in a work shop of some form, like a wood shop or general garage for a person real into DIY. I'd also be really REALLY interested in this if it was instead of an android device(or as well as an android device), it could be used as an interface device to a windows 10 machine. Basically, the ability to browse on a device without worrying about clean hands is invaluable, be it in kitchen, shop, outdoors(provided the display is powerful enough but from what you implied it won't be), is invaluable.
I would use Razer stolen laptop.
It's obviously crap because there's no RGB
looks interesting!! i like it as a common area devise in a home.
It's super cool and I would love to have one or two for the house. I'm sure it'll end up being expensive though. If it was $250 or less it would be awesome to have one set up on in the kitchen.
this new style of thumbnails needs to go. i hate them.
I would totally use this in my kitchen for recipes.
Hey what's with the weird vertical color banding / scan lines at about 2:30? is that some kind of artifact from you filming it or did you actually see those in the image that was projected?
@Linus just a random question do you think that your channel might be approached to create a UA-cam red series to do a technological experiment kind of show
As a teacher, this would be absolutely phenomenal in my classroom. We occasionally use chromebooks right now, but the small screens really prevent direct student-to-student interaction. I could put one of these with a group of four students (especially since the screen size can be increased depending on need) and allow them to collaborate on some sort of Google platform driven activity. Oh! Right now the optimal student:chromebook ratio for group projects is 2:1. This could bring that up to 4 or even 6:1, decreasing hardware costs significantly (depending on price point, of course).
I could actually layout the pieces of a quilt or sewing pattern right beside the how to video. Pretty cool. I want 3.
Honestly, sounds great for projecting tabletop RPG grid on a table. Hook it up to the GM's tablet and you ought to do something cool with it
This is great! I could honestly use this as an extra interactive screen for streaming and content creation. Yes! Do want!
Not sure if I would ever need this...but it does seem neat. Nerd factor is over 9000 though!
A better way to put this to actuality would be dual projection system(a folding system would be perfect). A screen where your hands would not block the screen while using.. well most of the time. also a special wide angle high speed-high res camera should accompany IR sensor. That would be useful to detect the shadows cast on the screen area and increase the brightness from the non blocked projector to compensate. would also be used to compensate for non uniformly lit surfaces . This would be an excellent lighting alternative for special occasions. imagine you are at a restaurant, and you could order with the on screen menu on your table, or a painting lit with this projector which could bring the painting to life with small alterations with the lighting.
I want one for the kitchen counter and for random movies on the bedroom wall! Love this idea.
I would turn a series of them into an interface-anywhere home automation system.
Detect what area I am in with my phone's bluetooth or wifi, and if I am in that room/area and I get a notification make it display it along with text to speech to read it (depending on the contents).
Im normally not really blow away by tech, but this, this is really something special
This would be useful for team services Kanban boards. defiantly something I will be looking into for the office. I can also see good options for teleconferencing. it will be interesting to see if there is native api hooks and maybe even an sdk
this looks awesome, really liking being able to watch movies where ever
You can also run moon light on these things to do Nvidia Gamestream, I have a portable projector like this but without touch stuff that runs android and play games through it on my ceiling.
A hybrid of this and LGs close range projector would be pretty sick
I'd use this for board room app demonstrations and presentations.
i recently picked up the moto z projector and i could definitely see the viability of this since one of the main issues i run into is trying to answer messages while projecting or something of that sort
do that you think it would be possible to like mount it to the wall and have a cool little touch screen on your wall
I am a CAD operator for a company, so I review a lot of blueprints with people. Not everyone likes squinting at a computer screen so a touch solution like this that allows me to display it on my desk, hey that's pretty cool. I'll think about getting one of these. :D
The board Game features and movie watching is the coolest concept. to play a board Games like Monopoly and move pieces on the table is cool.
I could definitely see this in a classroom for projectable tablets on a student's desk when needed.
you know, this would be really amazing if it were also wall-mountable. cool idea, and it seems to work really well.
With university coming up this year for me. This would be pretty cool on a dorm or whatever to save space and be useful, like a little portable smart TV:)
Great thing... Totally wanna check that out..
For office light productivity, it will be awesome in front of clients
This is what CES is supposed to be all about. Very interesting and useful-looking device!
I found this video amazing. Would be really cool to see it on the future combine with the Nvidia box. I will use it to project as a tv. and since I don't own a tv. may be useful to add a HDMI connector to connect with PS4
Definitely will be buying one of these. Very cool
This actually looks really cool
This is the best thing from ces this year
