You are a skier if you are more impressed by his flawless mogul line than you are the mute grab. Doing flawless moguls is by far the greater challenge. Tricks are the icing but perfect skiing is the cake.
not really on an Olympic level -- you see how perfectly manufactured these moguls are? zzz.... real mogul skiing is hotdoging on a far-less fabricated run. Not to take anything from Mozor, he was a best in his 20s.
Thank you for posting this. Been looking all around for it. Apart from SI front cover of Herman Meir (SP?) flying off the track perpendicular to the track, the pic of Moseley's 2nd jump was on my wall as a kid. Great video, hard to forget.
Gotta say. The sport has evolved A LOT since then. Although I recognize the influence, just like other extreme sports, the tricks have gotten ridiculous. Twelve years later in this run featured 1080 spin backflips and iron cross backflips.
@eDuB1980s actually the announcer called it wrong, a heli iron cross is ungrabbed but also with dropped tips. whether you feel it's proper or not, skiiers do indeed call that a mute, and we use truck driver (two handed tip grab) and japan (under-leg opposite foot grab) as well. that's what we officially call them worldwide, meaning no disrespect to board sports, so i don't see why you're being so hostile. in vids, in comps, on the hill, by athletes, those are the names. peace!
skimckay I raced against Jonny in US, NZ, USSR, SWZLD, CAD, etc. Beat him 19 times in 24 comps (me: 11 wins, him: 7 wins). Agreed, awesome guy indeed. I'm more of a dick or a douche ⛷
Unfortunate truth - skiing has never been "cool" nor will skiing ever be "cool". But Wayne Wong, Shane MC, & Jean-Luc Brassard were cool as fck (RIP brothers!). Jonny's cool too. *Qualifiers: 1. former member of US Freestyle Team (moguls & aerials '92-95), 2. Coaches, families, n few friends attend or watch comps...past 3 Olympics (TV + live) viewership:
@phil656565 Wrong again. Japan and Truck Driver are also skateboard tricks. Impossible to do them on skis. You're pointed in a different direction, it's not like we're talking quantum physics here.
Not how knees work at all. Using your knees is how you build healthy ones. All the kids I grew up skiing with have great knees. See Kneesovertoes guy on UA-cam
@eDuB1980s whoa, you have good ski buddies who never ever use that terminology? i've competed in freestyle since 91 and in the last ten years i haven't gone riding or picked up a mag or, hell, even watched a few minutes of x-games without hearing skiiers use those names for tricks. if you dont like the names, fine, but why are you so aggressively arguing that these names aren't even used officially by skiiers? instead of freaking out on me just hit a park or ski site and see for yourself.
agree with u. All sports evolve but what Junker8 said pushes the bounds of stupidity. At any given time athletes r always pushing 2 pull somethin new & with time, & many fails, they learn how 2 pull them easier. 2 clearify but in another sport, take Carey Hart & his shows on do'n the back flip 4 the very 1st time. junker8 is saying now, go & tell Carey then he should of done a dbl which is done now, then 2 tell some1 of today do a trple. Sport has 2 evolve but its NVR comparable in how he put it
can't grab mute on skis. Mute is a grab done on a skateboard or a snowboard. You heard the announcer, he called it a "Helicopter Iron Cross" - typical lame ski trick name. That being said it was still better than any of the other tricks done that day and put Mosley on the map.
@phil656565 haha you just proved your true colors. You definitely ARE a kook. You "ski/board 4+ days a week"? no real snowboarder would call it "boarding". You shouldn't have gotten into this argument in the first place. You honestly have no clue as to what you're talking about. I have nothing against real skiers. Some of my good friends ski serious lines and have vast backcountry experience, but they would never try and pretend they anything about my lifestyle or I theirs.
I was brought up and taught by the US SKI Team and Olympic medalists. I have been a ski and snowboard instructor at a vast majority of the nations best resorts.I was the head of a ski and snowboard school in Utah. I was there when snowboarding first hit the slopes and when snowboards still had strings attached to their noses way back in the day and was called Snurfing. I have been a part of the sport and a part of its evolution all the way to today. I am still teaching specialized ski and snowboard classes for our war heroes and military veterans. Boarding is a commonly known reference for snowboarding and always has been.
Awesome. Here we are in 2023 and this is still my favorite ‘Olympic Moment’ of all time. It was absolutely electric at the time.
The run that changed the history of skiing, what a moment to witness. I'll never forget it!
Changed the perception of skiing in one run. Boarding was king for anyone under 25 till that run
Nagano was easily the best Winter Olympics ever, easily. I remember watching this run live and thinking WOW. Unbeatable, so tight yet so fluid.
back when a 360 was called a helicopter!!!
To FIS and the announcers, yes. To us kids at the time it was a 360 mute grab.
he didn't do a 360 he did a 360 mute grab nowhere near a helicopter
I will never forget that moment. I remember watching that live and the world went slow motion at the second jump. Thank you for changing the paradigm
I got the privilege of meeting and skiing with Jonny Mosley back in 2007, at the Squaw Valley Lake Tahoe resort. Cool guy.

The jump that changed the game!
Awesome stuff. I still remember watching this on TV. Bring back childhood memories

I remember that run. Freeskiing was around at the time but it was still underground and this brought it full tilt to the mainstream.
Man this brings back memories. The run that changed skiing lol.
The patented Moseley 360, Iron cross tip drop with a mute grab. Watched it live!
Pure legend!! Have Yet to witness a better bump skier . Johnny boy just grinning the whole run😎 the boss!
I remember watching this performance like it all happened yesterday!
Wow. Look how smooth those moguls are. The mogul course this year didn't look nearly as nice as this!
Japanese perfection
Beautiful run. Product of much hard work and mental stamina.
Julien Regnier was the FIRST
#bonappétit
I remember watching that, it was epic!

Fantastic ...

Everything was perfect when Jonny rules the world!
Watched it live.
Ruined by bad editing.
don't be ignorant, sure it isn't as amazing as it was in 98 but still very few can ski a run like that
@nezy37 I hugely respect Moseley but I credit Shane McConkey with making skiing "cool" again

hooooooooooooooooooooly shit freestyle has changed
beastmode
What if it snowed in San Francisco?
call the commander in chief 'cause a swag bomb just got dropped on america
わたしの当時のpcの壁紙は、Jonny Moseley選手のセカンドエアーでした。笑
Jonny, did you ever compete against Brad Holmes? If so, what was the result?
@phil656565 apparently neither can you. Grew up on the beach in California
@phil656565 Wrong again. Japan and Truck Driver are also skateboard tricks. Impossible to do them on skis. You're pointed in a different direction, it's not like we're talking quantum physics here.
@Junker8 In the bumps, They could do better tricks of course but not ski those moguls better/faster.
helicopter iron cross xD
That skier will have knee replacement surgery by the time he's 50!

Kinda weird racing is cooler than the "progressive and rebellious" FIS infected uptight freestyle skiing nowadays. Such a shame.
I've always called the "360 mute grab" "The Moseley"
There are so many flippin' tricks ; )
@phil656565 hahah. Old Fart beach bum? I'm 25
