- Atlanta mailman Al Royal (Redd Foxx) and wife Victoria (Della Reese) are anticipating peaceful retirement years, until marital problems bring an extended visit from their daughter and her three children, including 15-year-old Curtis (Larenz Tate) who borrows Grandpa's truck in this opener.

This show did have class. I think had Redd Foxx didn't die, this show would've had a very long run.
I agree, when he had a heart attack during rehearsal on the set of The Royal Family, people thought he was doing the same thing his character did on Sanford and Son which is what his character is famous for, they didn't know it was that serious until they unsuccessful tried CPR and took him to the hospital where he later died. This was in October of 1991, then a few months Jackee Harry joined the cast as Della Reese's on screen sister and later changed to eldest daughter in other to save the show but due to the death of Redd Foxx and Low Ratings CBS cancelled the show leaving 2 episodes unaired.

This was his comeback show. It would have beem lengendary had he not died. So much knowldedge lost by Foxx.

When you're black in America, that's knowledge that's relevant today, tomorrow and hence forth. It's about survival. This came out damn near 30 years ago, and black parents are still telling their kids that same thing. WTF is wrong with that picture?

This is a pretty good pilot. Had Redd not died I could see it having a good run. Him and Della are great.
+mikedh If Redd hadnt passed away this show would've had a good run on the air maybe 5 or 6 seasons tops him and Della Reese made a good duo on this show and in the movie harlem nights...

Redd Foxx imo is one of the greatest comedians of all time, if not THE best. I grew up watching Sanford and Son, and I still watch all the episodes. Even though Redd was quite the dirty comedian he was honest, and up front about life. I would have loved to see him lived a little longer and entertain us like he always have and like he still does to this day. It's sad how his life was so tragic. RIP Redd Foxx!
I watched this show with my grandma, as it came on a special old show channel. I would watch Sanford and son & Touched by an angel with my grandma. Della reminds me of my grandma a lot.

This show would've been a hit. Unfortunately Redd passed away during the taping of the 9th episode. R.I.P to the legend.
I watched the Della Reese interview (here on UA-cam) about how Redd Foxx died during one of their rehearsals. So sad and CRUEL on the part of the producers. They said "how are they going to finish taping?" They didn't care that someone died that day. Heartless and evil how they treated Redd and tried teaching him how to be funny. The nerve. He and Della had so much chemistry. A real shame.
Now 3 people have passed from this show, RIP Naya Rivera🙏🏾🙏🏾

Well just so ya know, this show was on CBS during the 91/92 Season and during that time, NBC saw not only the Final Season of The Cosby Show, but also, Matlock (which later moved to abc) The Golden Girls (which later moved to CBS as The Golden Palace) and In the Heat of the Night (which later moved to CBS) as well as the Final Season for the late Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show and it was the Final Season for NBC airing Cartoons on Saturday Mornings
Plus, during that time, The Cosby Show dropped out of the Top 5, but stayed in the Nielsen Ratings Top 20 and Full House moved to abc Tuesday Nights and cracked the Nielsen Ratings Top 10 and even got more ratings than The Cosby Show and its spin-off A Different World as well as The Golden Girls and its spin-off Empty Nest
and 60 Minutes became THE #1 show on Television and CBS was THE #1 Network on both Daytime and Prime Time Network Television and Murder, She Wrote was still THE #1 Drama on Television

I remember it was a lot of buzz about this show and the pilot went over very well. It was expected to be a big hit for Redd and it was either suppose to putt him in the black with the IRS or was the first project he had after paying off the IRS. It was also on the set of this show that he had the heart attack that killed him after having an interview he was doing interrupted by one of the shows producers. Yo can find that interview on youtube.

@@camilagarcia5027 I can't see him not remembering her. He was a teen when he played on the show. I can see it the other way around, Naya not remembering him since she was only 4. In her book she said she remembered Redd Foxx and Della Reese well and how the cast spent time together like a real family and he called her his granddaughter and she actually thought that was really her grandad and she even writes about seeing him have a heart attack and the ride to the hospital and the wait they had in the waiting room with Larenz,Della, and the girl who played her big sister and how the docs came out and said Redd didn't make it. She also said she wanted to take ouija board on the studio set where they filmed "royal family" because she was filming a recent show on that same lot and she said she wanted to see if she could reconnect with Redd Foxx through her Ouija Board and let him know what she was up to. I guess she got to tell him and Della Reese everything when.she got to heaven.
