- Visit to Kallstadt and Bad Schonborn.
Kallstadt is famous for a number of reasons. It sits on the Deutsches Weinstrasse which is a charming ride through all of the small wine villages that runs from before Kallstadt and into the Alsace region of France.
The Left Bank of the Rhine was occupied by France during the War of the First Coalition in 1794. Following the Treaty of Campo Formio (1797), the First French Republic annexed the region and, between 1798 and 1814, Kallstadt belonged to the French department of Mont-Tonnerre. There still seems to French influence at least in the cusiine as I enjoyed escargot for my lunch.
After the fall of the Holy Roman Empire the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Germany became a loose confederation of states dominated by Austria and Prussia, which both annexed most of the German territories left of the Rhine. Kallstadt came under Austrian rule, but Austria quickly exchanged the area with the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816.
Through all this upheaval and history, the Heinz family and the Trump family have brought fame to this small village. During the visit we saw Trump's second cousin and had a nice visit with Mr. Muller. Credit to me that I never once acknowledged our curiousity about its most famous ancestor. But you know they knew ;)
