Welcome to Hatley Castle! This opulent castle, which is now on the grounds of Royal Roads University, was the home of James and Laura Dunsmuir. James was the son of industrialist Robert Dunsmuir, who came to Canada in 1851 to work as a miner for the Hudson’s Bay Company in Fort Rupert, British Columbia.
You might think Hatley Castle is somewhere in England. The architecture is medieval in appearance with lush gardens around the property. The Dunsmuirs moved into the castle in 1910, and they employed dozens of maids, footmen, gardeners and cooks.
By the way, that billiard table @2:00 is twelve feet long and 2,600 lbs (almost 1,200kg). It was made by Burroughes and Watts, a London based company. According to our guide, it had to be brought in through the window before the glass was in place. James tried to sell it but there were no takers and it has been in that room ever since.
Downstairs there is a small museum filled with photos and artifacts from the early 20th century. The story of the head cook, Ah Hoy, is typical of that era. As a Chinese immigrant, he worked long, punishing hours for a small wage. His fate after leaving the Hatley estate is unknown.
The castle has stood in for Professor Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters seen in the X2: X-Men United and several films after that. It also served as a naval training site during World War II.
