I got my first skipper's license for charter boats on the Oregon coast in 1981, then served on USCG motor lifeboats, and eventually earned an unlimited Master's license. Joel, Just watched the entire video. Thank you so much! Incredible information, resources, and opinions. I learned a ton! I have crossed the bar over 45 times now in My 24' Hewescraft... A few very dangerous and scary crossings as well, This presentation taught me a few things that I didn't previously know. It will absolutely save a life !

Great Video! This is by far the most comprehensive tutorial on the CR bar. I just got a 21 ft Seahawk and have been contemplating crossing for some day. I have the utmost respect for the bar having been over it with experienced captains before. Great content and I really appreciate you shared all of your research for public use.

Nice job, this video should be required viewing for anybody that intends to cross the Columbia river bar. I keep my boat moored at the port of Ilwaco Wa. And have been crossing the bar, first with my dad, since the mid 60's. You have covered everything that it has taken me 62 years to learn.

Great video! We made it in the bar the other day under horrible conditions and not knowing the details of the bar. We are heading south to San Diego in our 43’ sailboat and just gotta get out of the bar 1 last time. I’ve been researching the topic and your video helped me understand more about the bar and how to safely deal with its dangers👍🏻👍🏻

Hats off to ya! Great video! I’ve fished the Columbia and the buoy 10 fishery for a decade. Every year to this day I still learn something new down there with the ever changing conditions. I’m Looking at picking up a new 28’ offshore duck and just came across this video on your feed. Very good video. I will be recommending this to anyone I come across that wants solid advice down there.

I live in CA and mainly fish the SF bay. Honestly I've been a bit scared to venture out into the ocean, crossing the "potato patch" area (a rough water area. I have a 20' Aluminum boat (Thunderjet). Your videos are very educational. Even though we're dealing with different waterways. I learned a lot about all the other stuff in the video. It's helping build my knowledge and confidence. So thank you for taking the time to make the video.

Wow great vid. Thank you very much for your time and effort putting this together. I have only been over this bar twice on a guided trip. I have a 25 foot super vee pro. I know that a lot of people with the same boat crossing this bar but I am a complete novice about this bar crossing. Now I have a better understanding of when I could possibly go. Most likely will not as condition change down there really fast.

I had to watch your video again and noticed something I may have missed it I'm not sure. I have seen several boats head out with VHF antenna folded down, I don't go outside but even on Columbia or any big water mine are up a part of boat ramp checklist. Thanks again.

I lived through a 2011 boating accident out of Garibaldi. Several circumstances you address played into the perfect storm

Thank you David! I used headphones and my computer when I did the editing, after publishing I realized that the volume levels sound considerably different on different devises. I am going to work on finding the correct balance.

I have crossed the Columbia River Bar and fished the ocean about three times. I thought your video was well worth watching. I felt that the music was distractive and made it hard to understand your speech otherwise it was very well produced. Thank You.
Just ditch the music, I can barely hear you when it's not leveled properly.
Well this is all fine except my little Jimmy pushes my 40 ft boat around 5 knots, a following sea is constantly overtaking me while crossing the bar. Never cross on the ebb and time it to make maxim use of slack tide
