    Can we just all take a moment to appreciate the brilliance of the call sign of "Fug" for Mr. Wei Lee.

    • @ypw510
      @ypw510 Місяць тому

      Looked up what he does, although I posted earlier as a reply to a somewhat racist post about Mr. Lee. That discussion seems to have vanished into the ether. He’s a civilian director of flight engineering at Edwards AFB.
      The best part is he’s a civilian with a callsign.
      Here’s his bio from the Flight Test Museum:
      ********
      Chiawei (Wei) Lee is currently an assistant professor and Test Management Program Director at the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base. Prior to TPS, he worked at the test safety office, where he was responsible for conducting independent safety reviews on all projects executing at Edwards AFB. His previous test experience includes electronic warfare and weapons testing on the F-16, F-22, F-35, B-1, and B-2 platforms. “I do this job because I love being able to influence the next generation of leaders in flight test. I also love to fly the unique airplanes that test pilot school has access to. When I was in third grade, I wanted to be an Air Force pilot so I am living the dream!”
      Mr. Lee was born in Taiwan and grew up in Southern California. He received his Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and his Master of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University.
      His advice to our students is to “work hard and be awesome at whatever role or job you’re in at the moment. After a while, you will earn a reputation as a positive contributor and better opportunities will find you. I love my job now but growing up I worked as a busboy, waiter, private tutor, preschool/daycare teacher, lab technician, and engineering intern.”

    The moment I see the title "Fighter Pilot Sensors" I immediately think of the actual fighter pilots natural sensor array, their: eyes for WVR and for scanning the presented visuals, stereophonic auditory system with built in liquid matrix acceleration gauges, full body-full skin touch, heat, stretch thermoregulation system. Or in other terms Chemoreceptors(smell, taste,) Photoreceptors(light WVR), Mechanoreceptors(touch/vibration), Thermoreceptors(thermal), Nocicoreceptors(sp?(pain))
    All these fighter pilot sensors feed the most complex biological supercomputer in existence, the human brain. The human then applies inputs into the jet to acheive expected outcomes, pull back stick-nose rises etc. The value of these systems is inherent in why crew escape systems are a thing. If we can do a thing, and not have to put a human at risk, we should do so. And now for the clip.

    Out of curiosity, having a higher blood pressure makes you more tolerant to g-forces??

    • @hoghogwild
      @hoghogwild Місяць тому

      Having a higher systolic and diastolic pressure means that your major arteries are of a smaller diameter, thus have less blood volume within. When a pilot pulls g the blood has less "weight". Pressure is the measure of resistance, your heart is a pump. Tree trucks and celery have vessels that can pump liquids against 1g, though capillary action is at play there. But that would be impossible with larger diameter vessels.

    On the bright side, doubt pilots in non-NATO forces get this kind of attention. On of those results is an improved comfort level. In the 90s, I took a peek in the cockpits of a Su-27 and a F-15 at an air show. No love was shown to the Su-27 pilot by designers. Meanwhile, the F-15's interior was plush next to the Sukhoi's.

    "Deep Intel" showed a video of pilots who were "discipline" problems and suffered demotion. I'm shocked that officers didn't just get bounced for discipline problems... Of course, I've covered for officers before, but I didn't know they could be demoted...and survive...I've got my own boring story of going congressional and presidential, blah, blah, blah...and making them earn it...seeing my CC at the time lose face and my MSgt become the Command Chief at NGB and almost become the first female Command Chief Master Sergeant of the AF... We patched things up, but it was quite a crazy time...

    Does it matter now in the age of missiles? I guess this is the dog fights are dead argument?
    Is there any scenario where you end up in a close range fight anymore? I don't know maybe a scenario where you are intercepting somebody to escort them away and at the last minute they turn hostile on you?
    Maybe you're trying to ingress to your target, hopefully undetected by flying through valleys. You might be pretty close to radar or even enemy aircraft on patrol and somehow they detect you?

    Alan Shepard peed into his space suit and that knocked out several sensors that monitored his vitals. He was stuck on the launchpad for hours and they didn’t anticipate that need. But he was also lying on his back, which made it really interesting. They were more worried about one of the sensors arcing in a pure oxygen environment.

Certain parameters where human acceptance / action is needed. Certain parameters where AI is allowed to take over (pilot G-locked, enemy malware taking over ...)

    Data collecting simply for data is a waste of time. If they have pilots use the suit to get a base reference fine, and simply put them in it again maybe once a year to track. maybe. Everyone is different so you can simply use a set to say this guy needs help in this area, or maybe there's something wrong here we are not getting the data point that is our guide, is truly a waste of time. Tactics might determine certain data points and they change as tactics are worked out. This money could be better spent somewhere else to help pilots be the best they can be.
