He's hardwired to work. He would probably would still work for a month just without the pressure of meeting a deadline and hopefully just treat it as an 8 to 5 job and gets some long sleep.

@@matthewdenhof5841 such a good idea if it wasn't for the fact they all kinda compete against each other in a sense as far as I'm aware, even if some of them banded together for better work conditions that aren't so stressful, if others opt out then they'd have the opportunity to take the spotlight while everyone is chilling. Although then again, abusive work environments in Japan have existed for a LONG time; with enough general unrest built up and with the amount of sway big authors have on the industry, they might be able to pull something like that off, and I surely hope they can. They all need and deserve more consistent breaks, and they need to get them before overwork keeps breaking all of our favorite storytellers before their works reach completion, it hurts to watch it happen over and over, and the hurt we experience as readers obviously pales in comparison to their own, it's gotta stop 💔

Dragon ball is going on an indefinite hiatus as well. I think the unfortunate early end to his friend is making a lot of people rethink how they are living, this is totally understandable and im glad Oda is doing this.
My favorite thing about this community is that when Oda takes long breaks like this, most of us agree that he deserves his time off and wish him good health, instead of complaining about the break. Not all communities genuinely care for their continent creators like that.
That's because we are all very aware of the fact that mangakas are some of the most overworked people on the planet, and Oda has been doing this shit since the 90s, being the mastermind behind one of the longest, most popular manga of ALL TIME and there is NO ONE in this entire world who can finish the story of One Piece if he dies. ANY break from work this man takes is well-earned.
This is real shit. None of the fake drama about "waah my favorite character got an L or W". We need to let our elders cherish their few years left and realise what's really important. I'm sure Oda was hit by Toriyama's death harder than any of us, because he was his role model and eventually friend - one of the few that can actually relate to each other about the pressures of being an "important" mangaka.
When Oda said on the letter about thinking what One Piece will be, my understanding is that he was talking about the series itself rather than the in-universe treasure. This seems to be also a time when he's going to think about what he's going to do with the series.
Probably realizing after dory and brogy scaling complaints he needs to start to be careful how he handles his ideas. Egghead gets into fan fiction territory to be honest
Oda remembered Master Roshi's advice.

As much as I hate extended breaks, I get it. Oda definitely deserves a break. In the meantime, maybe I could get the platinum trophy in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
I think he should take at least a month and half or two month long hiatus. Get some mental, spiritual, and physical rest. Spend time with his family and loved ones. These last few chapters have been peak anyway.

I think he’s stated that he’s afraid that he’ll lose focus and motivation if he breaks for too long before finishing the OP manga. I think i disagree with him on that, but he has been going strong for like 25 years.

I don’t think he was referring to the actual “one piece”, but rather the story itself as a whole.

I always thought the catalyst to the final stretch would happen during an Elbaf arc or right after, particularly Garp revealing that he wasn't the hero of Gods Valley it was Roger who stopped the hunt and Rocks. Well Blackbeard has a Garp-cicle, and it should be nearly the time for Marco to show up with Old Stussy to tell her personal experience with the Rocks pirates directly to Luffy.
I think its more a thing where hes not still deciding what the One Piece is, its more that now that Laugh Tale is actually on the horizon, he actually needs to sit down and figure out how hes actually gonna show this thing. In any well planned project you write down your timeline and go "Okay im gonna do this by the end" and then you actually get there and have to figure out how to actually do it and in my experience, its always more annoying and tricky when you get to that part

Honestly, I do want the One Piece to be a catalyst that will set off a chain reaction of events that will lead to the final fight against the World Government. For me, I don't want the story to end with them finding the One Piece, as I feel like the buildup won't be justified if it just ends with them finding it, and nothing happening as the result of it. But I do trust in Oda, so I will let him cook

Oda didn't say he was thinking about "what the One Piece is", he said thinking about One Piece. As in the series. The themes, the characters, the meaning behind it all. We already know from past interviews that he's told his editors what the One Piece is.
He said what One Piece will be all about, will is future tense. He either is saying he wants to figure out what the next few chapters for One Piece is, or he is talking about The One Piece.

Let this legend rest a bit, as much as we all love One Piece we all also want the best out of the story, and for that to happen we need Oda Sensei at his best. Man deserves rest! If he needed 3 months I'd gladly support it.
I think he's known generally what the One Piece treasure is, but what he's doing is trying to make the specifics now.
"How big is it, what items are in it, what connections to the islands Luffy has visited, what secrets can I reveal or confirm about the history of the world?"
I can see Oda asking himself all these questions, and trying to assemble the most impactful version of the One Piece treasure he can.
I feel the same towards Oda, to him I'm a complete stranger that he doesn't know even exists but to me he's important. He created a world with characters that have brought me such joy growing up and I don't know how I would be regarding my mental health without this show and everything it has shown and taught me. I genuinely wish the very best for him, his health and his family and I hope he lives as long as he wants to when it is his time he won't have any regrets ❤
That is a smart move by Oda. I think after dealing with the loss of Toriyama a couple weeks ago probably got him to feel like this is the break that really needs. Grieving is not easy to deal with. He needs the time to gather his thoughts and his emotions.

As much as I’d hate it, I think the best he should do is make one piece biweekly. Only 2 chapters per month (maybe only one if there’s a shonen rest or whatever is called), and also take breaks (however maybe 2 weeks break instead of 3 like this one(?)). but yeah, health should come first

I dont know if its true or not but Oda ask shounen jump to allow him draw more pages he needs to think and spend more time what he can do with only 17-18 pages

As someone who sleeps for 4-5 hours and deals with 24 hour shifts, i tend to feel how my body completely crashing by the time i can finally get to take a day off. These breaks that Oda takes are a necessity and completely reasonable and i hope the majority of people understand that
Honestly one piece should just go bi-weekly at this point. It would only be about less chapter a month if he stops taking so often breaks and it would allow for a less crunched lifestyle. You can’t really repair the damage done by only getting 3-4 hours of sleep one week but sleeping in the next week. I think it would be best for his health

Toriyama was 68. Not young necessarily but in this day and age still young enough to do things usually. Unless you've worn yourself out.
Take that trip now. Do that exciting thing now. 10 years from now, you might not be able to.
Plan for the future absolutely, put money aside and think far ahead but don't forget to live now, too.
The TRUE one piece is ABSOLUTELY the friends we made along the way. Whatever the actual treasure will be, it wont live up to many peoples expectations, but thats because the whole story has been so immense, compelling and long-standing, theres no way it could be capped with one big treasure and reveal at the end.
People say its cliche, but the journey truly makes the destination worthwhile in this case. The destination would mean nothing without the journey, but the journey can stand on its own to feet as an unfinished masterpiece, even without the destination.
The fact that Oda never gave a single thought as to what the One Piece actually is prior to now while fans have been speculating about it for literal DECADES is hilarious to me. 😂
I am Super Glad to see Oda is taking his health seriously, I really hope that he gets the much needed sleep, spends time with his family, and maybe does some exercise to keep himself in motion during this 3 week break of no One Piece chapters.

With all of the answers to series-long questions quickly approaching, this really seems like Oda's last big opportunity to change certain details that will soon be foundational for the entire series. The conclusion is pretty major, after all. What exactly the One Piece is has probably been known by Oda from the start, yet he can still change even that detail if he wishes, for now. He's cooking, for sure.
And for his breaks, I'd prefer 100 chapters over 20 years than to never see the final page.

I'm good with Oda taking the time he needs. I've heard about what had happened to the maker of HunterXHunter, and with Toriyama's passing, I have no problems with mangaka using it as a moment to reflect about their own lives, and then making active choices in response.
