I've made the switch to Crunchbang because of this video. I love the connection between you both on screen. It's a remarkable love that truly can be seen on the other side of the world. Oh and after trying around 12 Linux Distros over the last few years I think I finally have arrived at the one that fits me perfectly. Thanks for doing what you do.
This is my first Linux distro :) I like it and would definitely recommend it to people who are frustrated with slow computers. This is good for any computer so it is very versatile. Oh and he didn't mention that you can customize it so that it looks more attractive and exactly how you want. You don't even have to use open box if you don't want. That's the joy of linux, you can change what you want.
The "6502" screensaver seemed to baffle you folks: 6502 was one of the processors in the 80s used in the Acorn BBC micro, but also several other machines of the time
"6502" is the name of one of the very first processors used in home computers such as the first Apples, and also in a number of games consoles from that era such as the Atari 2600 and 800 ...hence the screen saver graphic is in the style of those old computers.
Excellent video as ever... After watching this episode, I decided to try out #!OS myself. I’m really impressed by the live CD. I’m going to install it on my main box today. Thanks to you and to ‘Mum’ for your review. I think that you might just be opening up Linux to a whole new public that would never even consider it - well done to you both :)
LMAO, this is one of the funniest OSfirsttimer episodes I've seen. From using the "terminator" to terminate the computer to the man page to you saying placenta and your mom asking "did you just say placenta?" and the very awkward moment that follows, this is definitely one of my favorite and funny videos.
Excellent video, Philip. I have blogged about it on my Larry the CrunchBang Guy blog, and I wanted to say you two did a great job. "Man pages," though, are "manual pages," and Conky is an excellent program that maybe you should do a show on. Anyway, thanks for the great video.
The problem with terrified mum is that we just don't have time for it. We both have full time jobs and only really get a chance to just do these 30 minute (before editing) videos on Sundays. That channel is semi dead unless of course youtube becomes our new job which I highly doubt.
I said this was a fast OS... not "The fastest". Also its booting off a live usb rather than the hard drive which slows it down. Once it is at the desktop though it is very fast.
Brilliant. Your mum rocks! It would be great if you set up some kind of support video, a tutorial where your mother shows how its done and there by being a "this works" model for it. Well done.
6502 references the 6502 assembly language which was used for the BBC Micro, Atari 2600, Commodore 64, Apple II, and the Nintendo Entertainment System. Bender in Futurama has a 6502 processor for a brain. Even the Terminator was programmed in 6502.
Glad you did a review of #! I use it all the time but mine's a bit pimped. Maybe your mum would like this if the background wasn't the default "grey". It IS very fast to use indeed. Thanks for the video.
I know... Next I'll be forced to switch to UA-cam 2 then a year after that the UA-cam Metro Layout... I wish new layouts would become options rather than forceful changes.
This vid is great. I use crunchbang always, and my friends and family assume that it is not user friendly, just because I always have a lot of terminals and stuff open. This is very reassuring to me that crunchbang is in fact user friendly, and I can tell my friends and family to shove it. Your mum makes a great tester, since she seems to have the patience necessary to even bother to try out a new OS. Keep making these vids! As many as your mum can stand.
Conky is the program showing the text overlayed on your desktop background. A man page is MANual page, basicly a help file. In console, you can type "man {command here}" to get the manual on a certain command, for example "man ls" will give you the manual for the ls command. X (a.k.a. X11) is the program that runs graphical environment. Bash stands for Bourn Again SHell and it's the standard shell used in most Linux terminals.
Time to teach ^^... Reverse polish notation is just another way to write a mathematical expression, where operations follow their operands. It's used in computer science since it's more memory efficient and simpler to evaluate using a stack. For example: 1 + 2 is 1 2 + 1 + 2 + 3 * 4 * 5 is 1 2 3 + 4 5 *
I see the ads and non-free products that canonical promotes in Ubuntu as support for the evolution and progress of a more mainstream Linux-based system that increases the chances of Ubuntu reaching the widespread market.
I've only seen one other video(ubuntu) but I do like the content. It shows how a some what avg or normal windows user could get around Linux distros if they wanted to try. Its not so big and scarey plus your mum seems practical and sensible. Very knowledgeable on her likes and dislikes which is key and I appreciate her honesty. I am curious if she does or would use linux full time or even in a dual boot situation?
FYI - "man" is the command for manual within most *nix shells. So "man ls" give you a manual of how you use the "ls" command within the shell or terminal.
+Neosashi same, it's more lightweight than lubuntu (lxde) I am thinking of experimenting with this soon. And I will be able to see if it delivers the things i would like it to like lubuntu does
I love this review! You should have 'mum' try Simplice. Like Crunchbang, it is openbox based, but it has a much more 'attactive' user interface for causal users.
Damn, this is a cool video :) and it's a very interesting and original idea to have a mom as QA of OS. I've just subsribe on your channel :) Very nice.
I get so many comments across all my videos and I have a full time job away from this UA-cam channel. Its difficult to reply to everyone's comments and I typically only reply to questions and mostly pms.
Shun the naysayers! Your "Mum tries out..." videos are great. Over the last few days I've been researching various OSes for an old box that has been outgrown by Ubuntu, which it used to run happily. Your videos have cropped up several times near the top of my UA-cam search hits, so they're obviously popular, and it's clear why that is: you have a great format here, pitching computer nerd against intelligent but straight-talking mum, who's not afraid to say when something is poorly designed.
I find it interesting that even after being told that a right click would open up the menu, she still wanted to use super-space. Goes to show you keyboard shortcuts ARE useful for normal people.
Torrents are the best way to do it but you can download them from the MSDN website (Microsoft Developers Network) and download the iso's from there and find an activator.
"halt" just powers down the computer, with a similar effect to holding down the power button for 10 seconds. The "shutdown" command provides time for programs to execute code to prepare for shutting down.
I suggest you to add tasks like, surfing the web, watch a youtube video (that is installing flash player or other plugins if necessary), scan/print a document (installing printer and scanner. That kind of tasks I think would really tell if a OS is suited for an average user. In linux based OS doing things like installing devices can be really hard if the hardware is not immediatly recognized.
Ya' know, the intro isn't half bad, this is a guy in his mid-late teens making something he enjoys and do you really think it's gonna be the best youtube video ever made? Huh?
are you sure you were actually shut down? From my understanding win8 does essentially standby unless you hold shift button while powering down; hence, faster boot times
I have a few questions. 1. I am only able to have wireless network access, so how do I program it to connect through wireless and not wired? Given that it has wireless support. 2) I am not sure if this is the best option for my netbook but I have been watching your videos after I became interested in other possible OSs other than Windows. What OS would you recommend for a netbook with a 1GHz dual core CPU and 4 GBs of RAM? I am looking more for something that runs fast and smooth.
Try out Slitaz! It's like this but I think Slitaz is better for the most part. For one thing, Slitaz has a 35mb iso that fits very easily on almost any cd or flash drive while this is 771mb, requiring a 1gb drive or a dvd. Slitaz includes openoffice, colors, etc but is even smaller than this, managing to be lightweight without looking like it for the most part. It's very usable and does not make so much use of keyboard shortcuts. I believe it can convert debian packages to its own format too.
Freedom to use paid, closed source software is also freedom, so I would argue Ubuntu actually gives people more freedom than distros which discourage and makes difficult the use of paid and/or closed source stuff. It would be great if some big proprietary software companies (like, say, Adobe) started supporting Linux.
***** Oh yeah, I know that. That’s one of the reasons it’s my favorite company in the game industry. What I’m saying is, this whole idea that having proprietary software in Linux-based OSes is somehow against its ideal of freedom is absurd. Not only that, it’s counter-productive. Whe should encourage proprietary developers to support Linux, not do the opposite. Specially for games. There usually aren’t a lot of advantages to making games open-source, and it would be really great for everyone if all the proprietary ones worked on Linux.
Crunchbang was named as such because it started off as ubuntu-based and being extremely unstable. What's so amazing about the distro is that it balances being lightweight and user-friendly, which very few other distros attempt. It's not perfect (I find it odd #! uses bloat like Terminator and VLC by default), but it's a very nice gateway for someone who wants to be less reliant on heavy Mint tools yet still isn't a terminal wizard and just wants an easy experience. Btw read some man pages bro
The only company that I know of that sells computers with linux by default is system76. I looked at some of their computers, and they have the ubuntu symbol on it.
This is mother and son?
What a beautiful connection you two have. You both seem to really enjoy making these videos.
All your videos are awesome! :-)
Welcome to another episode of wonders of the world wide web this episode we are wondering why ur here?
8 year old comment
woah what a crossover
what a fascinating way to review products. keep up the good work! maybe i should get my dad to review death metal albums with me or something.
NOT A GOOD IDEA
I've made the switch to Crunchbang because of this video.
I love the connection between you both on screen. It's a remarkable love that truly can be seen on the other side of the world.
Oh and after trying around 12 Linux Distros over the last few years I think I finally have arrived at the one that fits me perfectly. Thanks for doing what you do.
Wow, your video compelled even Dwayne Johnson to make the switch.. Kudos!
This is my first Linux distro :) I like it and would definitely recommend it to people who are frustrated with slow computers. This is good for any computer so it is very versatile.

That drive is my own drive for testing operating systems on my computer I currently have Ubuntu gnome 13.04 installed.
I am surprised that I am the first reply after 6 years! :D
That intro was genuinely funny :)
Btw, use crunchbang on my EEEPC, best lightweight distro ever.
In its Ubuntu days, Crunchbang even had a colourful wallpaper :)

The "6502" screensaver seemed to baffle you folks:
6502 was one of the processors in the 80s used in the Acorn BBC micro, but also several other machines of the time
This screensaver has a 6502 processor emulator built in and displays multiple screensavers written for this processor.
6502 powers the Commodore VIC-20 all the way up to Commodore 128, the NES and the SNES, the Apple II and many others machines.
i love this channel. its a perfect nice. its cool!
LOL i actually meant niche** not nice. i sound like an idiot
i love lightweight out-of-the-bock experiences!
bock?
Lesnite _ sounded like it.
Drop Therapy Yeah it did xD
"6502" is the name of one of the very first processors used in home computers such as the first Apples, and also in a number of games consoles from that era such as the Atari 2600 and 800 ...hence the screen saver graphic is in the style of those old computers.

The Windows key is the best! It's super! XD
No I am not getting paid for mentioning that tubetape website but we do get paid for the random UA-cam banner ads that sometimes appear in our videos.
The problem with terrified mum is that we just don't have time for it. We both have full time jobs and only really get a chance to just do these 30 minute (before editing) videos on Sundays. That channel is semi dead unless of course youtube becomes our new job which I highly doubt.

tx for the upload, love this production. thumbs up.
Awesome intro! Also, awesome series, I love watching you guys.
Brilliant. Your mum rocks! It would be great if you set up some kind of support video, a tutorial where your mother shows how its done and there by being a "this works" model for it. Well done.
It was something to do with the colour scheme in this os that caused the flickering. It was worse when the screen was mostly white with abiword.
6502 references the 6502 assembly language which was used for the BBC Micro, Atari 2600, Commodore 64, Apple II, and the Nintendo Entertainment System. Bender in Futurama has a 6502 processor for a brain. Even the Terminator was programmed in 6502.
22:58 WTF PHILIP TUBETAPE IS HORRIBLE Edit: ohhh the URL changed since 2013
Glad you did a review of #! I use it all the time but mine's a bit pimped. Maybe your mum would like this if the background wasn't the default "grey".
It IS very fast to use indeed.
Thanks for the video.
Maybe if I added blood splatter it would be a little over the top but I think its fine as it is
Big fan of CrunchBang. Great for netbooks. :) Keep up the good work.
I know... Next I'll be forced to switch to UA-cam 2 then a year after that the UA-cam Metro Layout... I wish new layouts would become options rather than forceful changes.

Keep making these vids! As many as your mum can stand.
I release a video every Sunday night (Australian time) in case you didn't notice :)
1:25 and 1:36 : the time changes because the NTP service sets the hardware clock to UTC [which is 10 hours behind Australian Eastern Standard Time].
crunchbang has always been my favourite distro

Really nice mum! Hope mine had so much patience.
im currently using crunchbang myself. it's pretty awesome once you get use to the weird layout
I see the ads and non-free products that canonical promotes in Ubuntu as support for the evolution and progress of a more mainstream Linux-based system that increases the chances of Ubuntu reaching the widespread market.

The intro was a bit weird but I like how open your mother is when it comes to PCs.
Mine is always scared to break something.
When I was younger, my mom keep asking me to pause my tech interest of the moment to spend more family time. Now I know it is possible to do both...
FYI - "man" is the command for manual within most *nix shells. So "man ls" give you a manual of how you use the "ls" command within the shell or terminal.
Lol do people like the intro or hate it? I've been getting pretty replies stating both...
You know... Conky is the thing that puts those infos and shortcuts on the screen. Pretty editable and really good.
FYI conky is a system monitor. it shows you RAM usage, CPU usage, up-time ect.
Nice job on the intro
I actually love the way crunchbang looks
+Neosashi Me too. :)
+Neosashi same, it's more lightweight than lubuntu (lxde) I am thinking of experimenting with this soon. And I will be able to see if it delivers the things i would like it to like lubuntu does
very nice video and good job on the intro :)
After the next minute comes the hour goes back to normal
Hey, good video as always. Are new TerrifiedMum videos coming? Or have u decided to focus only on this?
I love this review! You should have 'mum' try Simplice. Like Crunchbang, it is openbox based, but it has a much more 'attactive' user interface for causal users.
Hey, I like the intro you did for this video!
I watched this video on Crunchbang. Nice review.
Conky is that thing on the right side of the screen that was displaying the cpu and memory usage, clock, free and used space, shortcuts key, etc etc.
I love all of your videos and I was your 9000th subscriber!
Seems you have crazy with your videos.... :)
Keep up the good work!
the intro just was ,,hooly helld'' ^^

My favorite distro evah!! All Debian, no cruft.
I find it interesting that even after being told that a right click would open up the menu, she still wanted to use super-space. Goes to show you keyboard shortcuts ARE useful for normal people.

Very, very interesting....She asks all the right questions...
"halt" just powers down the computer, with a similar effect to holding down the power button for 10 seconds. The "shutdown" command provides time for programs to execute code to prepare for shutting down.
RIP #!
its not dead
@@ryanwilson5079 Just use BunsenLabs

Compared to Lubuntu, which is what I use, Crunchbang is far from being lightweight.
It is, though, one of my favorite distros.
Ya' know, the intro isn't half bad, this is a guy in his mid-late teens making something he enjoys and do you really think it's gonna be the best youtube video ever made? Huh?
The operating system just connected to a internet time server and retrieved the correct time info.
I run my 1999's 128 MB Ram computer with Crunchbang Linux.
Holding function and pressing f1 is like pressing f7 on my keyboard. F2+fuction = f8 and so on...
The conky was that block of information in the desktop where you saw all the keyboard shortcuts and the system information
"man" page is short for manual.... if you open terminal and type "man" and then any command, you'll get the manual for that command. Try it!
are you sure you were actually shut down? From my understanding win8 does essentially standby unless you hold shift button while powering down; hence, faster boot times

do you collect many DOS games? or old games like on floppy ? i do i play it in DOSbox
Conley is a system monitor, and terminator is a program where you have more that one terminal In a window
Try out Slitaz! It's like this but I think Slitaz is better for the most part. LOL FOR THE INTRO I WATCHED IT LIKE 11 TIMES
Did you know that the man page is a manual and the Super for mac is the Command key?
crunchbang rocks! ;-)

18:05 man page means manual page. It's just the manual
Because boots and runs insenaly fast, very beautiful , hardly any crash, is easy to use and doesn't get in my way. That is why :).
Man in Linux is short for MANual
Dude. Your mom is amazing) you are lucky.
Of all the desktop's "Mum" has tried: which does she like best?
Is a great distro for netbooks! Plus Debian 7 under the hood!
Conky is the thing that shows you your shortcuts, and the name of the terminal emulator is terminator.
conkey was the thing that showed you all the short cuts and the man page means maunaul page.
The only company that I know of that sells computers with linux by default is system76. I looked at some of their computers, and they have the ubuntu symbol on it.
Please can you do a video of how you set up an OS
I would love to see that. Manjaro seconded.
Openbox is superfast even compared to XFCE, i have tried both desktops with Manjaro Linux and the difference is evident.
Shift + [ any alphanumeric key ] = either uppercase or a symbol, so that is the intuitive reason why they don't have it with shift.
