  • Microsoft got a lot right about the Surface Duo, but the software is a bit of a mess right now. If the bugs get fixed, though, this could eventually be an incredible product.

    I've been a Early Adopter since the Nokia N97 days..... I have no problems with Bugs I can't wait to get this device for 4 reasons:
    1.) It's STILL THE ABSOLUTE Coolest Sci-fi looking device that will Turn Heads where ever I go.
    2.) The Sheer Screen Real estate w/the Pen.
    3. And being an Early Adopter means going through all the phases that this Beast of a device comes into its own with software updates.
    4.) Having a discount as a trade-in when the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 comes out.

      What a strange views you have :))
      1) It's not. Maybe in your personal taste, but this thing looks like some schoolboy tries to replicate a Samsung Fold.
      2) What's cool in two small screens instead of one big of the Fold?
      3) This device won't help any updates. You can't remove ridiculously huge frames of a screen, a metal thing in the middle and the impotent processor and camera. Not a single MS device, apart from XBox was a success. All of them is weird things for the fans at best.
      4) Well... maybe, but I still cant think a single reason not to buy Fold 2 if you need a device like this.

    I feel like the Surface Duo 2 is gonna be absolute fire. They built a product with incredible precision and care, and now they're getting lots of solid feedback from the market to make it even better. It sounds like most folks would take 1 or 2 mm on each panel to get qi/nfc/ and a bigger camera sensor.

    • @riggi_
      @riggi_ 4 роки тому

      True. People just don't get it. This is a great attempt at making Mobile phones productive that to pretend to make it productive like other companies do. People appreciate Galaxy note for being a productivity machine, while a stylus for a 6.5 inch screen makes no sense, no screen real estate to take benefit of the pen. Duo Gen 1 is far more promising than the Fold.

    • @keithtae
      @keithtae 4 роки тому +1

      @@riggi_ dont forget, ZTE Docomo, Kyocera all have dual screen phones and all failed terribly. The only thing new here is how slim it is and a windows logo. Dual screen is old and it won't take off. A phone unfold into a tablet is what people have been dreaming for, not dual screen phones. A folding tablet makes more sense than a dual screen phone. Why would I carry a dual screen device if I can have two perfectly working smartphones with 2 separate sim card. It doesn't even make sense using the duo as a tablet with a gigantic seam in the middle and only 1 camera? You will see people returning the device 1 or 2 months after they purchase it. Just too many compromises.

    • @riggi_
      @riggi_ 4 роки тому

      @@keithtae I completely agree with your view. And that is what I want to clarify here, this form factor is not just another phone, it's a form factor dedicated to productivity first, which is also a phone, and people fail to understand this. As u said ZTE did try this too, LG does the same.
      My point is about this form factor and not the product. As foldable screen tech improves the bezel in the centre can be removed. It's the way your apps adapt to larger screen that matters. Fold is a phone with just a larger display hence multi tasking is not efficient, whereas when apps treat the screen real estate as dual display instead of one large one, user efficiency increases.
      To be precise, the OS needs to function like iPad OS than iOS.

    I'm actually surprised about the bugs, as I thought for sure the software would be the area of least concern. But you're right, the Surface team is onto something. What that is I don't know just yet, but the Duo is giving me the same transformative feeling the original Surface did.
    I'll probably still get one just because I:m one of the few who preferred Microsoft phones.

    • @Sharky165
      @Sharky165 4 роки тому +1

      yourfellowman11 But...it’s _not_ a Windows phone, it’s an Android phone with some MS Surface-like software integration; therein lies the rub.
      I agree that the concept is interesting, but this iteration is somewhat of a train wreck (as Daniel said) - even for a 1st Gen device.
      The Galaxy Z Fold 2 blows the Duo away with better specs (including usable Bluetooth! 🤣), better battery life, better photo/video quality, a more well rounded feature set (it has NFC & wireless charging) and, yes, software optimization (no Jank/sluggishness).
      I’ve seen a demo of MS apps on the Fold and they looked really good, FWIW. Hell, I’d recommend the LG V60 or Velvet over the Duo for the price-conscious dual-screen early adopter, until Microsoft gets its act together.

  • @anirudhpuranik5222

    This thing has a lot of potential. Hopefully Microsoft fixes the software issues. And I hope for the next generation, they bring in quad speakers on those huge bezels and a secondary ultra wide angle lens, while both cameras being 12 MP. A little extra thickness is a good compromise for these add ons.
    For this kind of device, Microsoft has to bundle in accessories like surface buds and pen. Nobody wants to hold a notebook like device to their ears to make a call. Since it's a notebook like device, a cheaper version of the surface pen can be included within the box. And yes, RAM should be atleast 8 GB.

    I would definitely not characterize this device as a "hot mess", and the reviewer doesn't seem to understand that if you don't expect to use this device's features and use the Microsoft ecosystem, then just don't buy it.

      As for the claim that either you want the "Microsoft ecosystem" or just don't buy it: this is simple insane... yes, native apps will work better and we expect Microsoft to integrate them but just that is not enough. This is a $1300 device for the mass market, it has to be better than being just being a "Microsoft machine." Microsoft choose Android BECAUSE it knew that it could not launch another phone without app support...

    I'll never understand reviewers telling you "Don't buy a product." aren't you suppose to be impartial? I understand if the product is seriously broken, which the Surface Duo is not. By telling people not to buy a product you are basically killing the product. Why would a company invest in a better product if the initial product doesn't sell as intended?

    Just remembered its first gen. The Samsung fold had a screen that looked like a screen protector and many people broke it, it had a tiny front screen with a hella thick chin and forhead. The hinge wasnt well protected snd so on. Give the duo time to come out with a second gen and alot of the issue will be gone.

    A foldable screen with Windows 11 can do all of that splitting better than 2 separate dual screens, without a hinge or light gap obstructing the tablet/book view.
    MS ought to go foldable screen on the inside and a single phone display on the outside.
    Get better utility with the foldable inner tablet and potential laptop landscape orientation than some very niche “tent” modes.

    I really wish tech reviews watch their words better when it comes to recommending devices. I think that initailly almost all reviewers got it wrong. First, the Duo has Microsoft and Google services, just like every other smartphone that runs Android. Prompting a user to sign in with both accounts should have been expected since the device is made by Microsoft. Secondly, this isn't a phone- not saying this reviewer in particular is saying it is, but I feel like his posisiton is based on that of other smartphones. Microsoft had to do a lot of work to get its skin to run as efficiently as possible on a mobile operating system that was simply not designed for this form factor. I think they did a great job with it. As far as bugs, currently, it is not as bad as it was protrayed. I will say, the issues don't rely with Microsoft- it's Android. It's simply not optimized to run with the device, simple as that. Doesn't mean that you can't use it. As far as speed, it's not a slow phone. Does it slow doen at times? yes. The specific issue with UA-cam and potential bluetooth lags? I have not had that problem. The camera? It's not the best camera, not the worst. It's usable. I really tried to agree with the reviewers and say it's bad, but it's not. Lastly, ALL of the phones he compared it to are not in the Duo's weight class. NO PHONE ON THE MARKET IS BECAUSE ITS NOT A PHONE. That's why there is no screen on the front!! If you really want to see your notifications without opening the Duo, buy a smartwatch!! The gripe I had with my smartwatch paired to my phone most of the time was that I never really used it while paired on my Note 10+ unless it was far away from me and still connected. If it was near me and I heard a notification sound on my phone, regardless if I got the notification on my watch I would unlock the phone. I think it was just habit for me. But with the Duo, I can get the notification on the watch, view it, then decide if it's important enough to open the Duo. I think that was the whole purpose of having a smartwatch on your wrist. If you want a new experience on a mobile device that runs android, and you want to be more productive, or at the very least have more screen real estate without having to carry a tablet all around, this is the mobile device for you. If you like the idea of having a phone and a tablet, this might not be the device for you. I feel that if reviewers focus more on the usability than its price, and compariing it to other devices that can't hold a candle to what this device does, Microsoft's intended vision would reach more people, and put the people in a position to make an informed decision for themselves if they wanted to purchase the device. I didn't buy it when it first came out due to all of the bad reviews, but due to the concept of the device and how I felt I would be able to make use of it, I decided to purchase it for myself straight from Microsoft to ake advantage of the 60 day return policy, and so far...I don't think I will be sending it back. It is an incredible device. If you are on the fence, buy it and give it a chance!!

Not even considering the usage of 2 apps, but opening a suite of office, social, and media apps and switching between them on the different displays... 6gb won't be able to hold too many background apps. This could be an issue if you call for an app you've switched from to open on one of the displays.. only for the app to reload and restart losing where you left once brought to the foreground. I still have high hopes for the Surface Neo, hopefully they learn from their mistakes with the Duo as far as usage and practicality goes. Especially since it will not be Android based.

      @@SHRModding my Note 10+ has 12 gigs of ram. Out of that 12gb.. 8gb are being used to suspend apps that I use frequently while nearly 900mb's are reserved for the system. If additional ram is needed, it will close the earliest apps suspended and keep the latest suspended in the background. Android manages ram actually very well if you have enough.. and if the app is optimized properly by its developers. Looking at my list of apps suspended in ram currently and the size they are taking up... yeah 6GB with anywhere from about 5gb or 4gb usable after the system and framework take their cut.. wouldn't cut it for some one coming from a Note that actually utilize their devices capabilities.
      Apps take up more space than I think you realize to suspend in the background. But going back to an app and being exactly where I left off without refreshing or reloading is pretty important and worth the additional Ram on board.
      If it works for you? Thats cool, but for many of us going from 8gb and 12gb down to 6gb is just ridiculous especially at that price point. Don't tell me its enough as it's clearly not for me, especially after looking at my own usage and the size of my apps running and resting in ram. Others have reported just that as well.. the system acting very sluggish if enough apps are opened, and apps opened earlier being reloaded when they switch back to them.
      I'm glad that 6gb is enough for you as thats all you get with the Duo. But just because it works for you doesn't mean it will and should work for everyone else, thats silly.
      If I ever owned a gen 1 Duo, it will be used with WiFi only as a companion to my computer for certain office apps. It probably wouldn't leave my desk. I definitely wouldn't use it for media consumption or gaming as the hinge literally eats content instead of properly spanning between the 2 displays, and I wouldn't have paid $1,500.00 for it as it is currently overpriced, I don't see that value in the device. 700 or 900 would probably make more sense. If it were 1,000 I'd probably consider purchasing along side my Note 20 ultra and galaxy fold 2 I have on the way.
      Now the Surface Neo on the other hand.. I will definitely opt for it over the Duo as a 2nd or 3rd productivity device.

Put one in a drawer and start it up in twelve months time, install the updates, and Wella, the thing will fly, and you' ll also be the owner of a pretty valuable first generation piece of high tech. Again innovation is only worthwhile if it improves or adds to your experience, the Duo is sadly not innovation ATM, it is a beta project that MS are unable to get to work well but have run out of time and have dumped the work in progress on their hardcore fans.
    It is so disappointing as I am an advocate of this form factor rather than the Fold take, that is for the medium-term till folding glass becomes a reality. Apple gets knocked for taking its time to innovate but they rarely release such an incomplete device as this. It seems these days it is more important to beat deadlines than care for their customers which is a shame for their loyal fans. I may have put up with this low-spec featureless effort if it simply worked but the software is a mess and there is simply no excuse after all this time. The good news is that it can only get better and it certainly needs to.
