Change 2001! I'm putting the TOLMAN build on HOLD due to it being too big for my garage. I decided to build a Sea Strike 18 instead. Deep Sea capable and a smaller build for the garage space. Still keeping the Tolman book as it has the best information on building I've found anywhere so far... Good luck to all your Tolman builds and keep me posted...
@@mydreamboatproject Your build - but have you seen the Sea Strike plans? Are you familiar with the details of the build process? IT is not going to be as easy as a Tolman Standard that is for sure. You own the Tolman book therefore you own the plans with a lot of explanation and details in the book. And you have a huge online community of Tolman builders on fishyfish.com to help you along the way. Just sayin...you can build the Tolman to 18
@@johngoodell2775 Hi John, yes I have the plans and have already started the build. Most of them are full size plans and it seems very straight forward to build. Mark Bowdige Designs where I got the plans has a private forum also with tons of pictures, step by step builds and lots of help there for any question imaginable. He's been in touch with me several times a week since I started for advice and chatting. I bought about 5 sets of plans for different boats before I decided on the Seastrike18 and am very happy with my decision. Thanks for your concern and interest.
A friend in Kodiak told me about these boats 20 years ago, been wanting to build one ever since. I looked into a CNC’d kit that provides nearly all of the pieces pre cut, also visited shop in Bend, OR. Very slick. For me it would save a lot of time and likely frustration. They also offered an evolved version too called the Great Alaskan. It’s spec’d by a marine architect has a Coast Guard certification. They’re a little bigger and the plans come with “re-explained” additional instructions that attempt to clear up some of the passages that folks had interpretation questions on those in Renn’s book.
Hey - just ran across your channel. I’m finishing up a 23’ Widebody, and the building process has been a lot of fun and rewarding. Good luck on your project!

@@carvinlambert6899 Ahoy... Not much sawdust yet... I've finished my frame but am still yet to order the marine ply. Anxiousness awaiting more cash to come in. lol
I'm seriously considering building a Tolman and I will be buying this book this week. Fortunatly I live in a rural area and I have about 3 acres of land, mostly open yard area so I have plenty of room to build and store it.
Hi Rene! I love the Toleman skiff and have two of his books and am looking forward to building the wide body one day, However, before i do that, i have set in my mind to build the Riptide XR-457. So i was excited to see that you were posting videos of your journey building your Sea Strike. Recently I’ve noticed that i have not been able to find the videos you had posted earlier regarding the Sea Strike. Have they been removed? I am in the process of transferring the plans of my Rip Tide to plywood and was hoping to review your videos to better understand the process.. I’m not sure if I’m looking in the wrong spot or searching incorrectly. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Hope you’re doing great and still building your dream boat!!
Good luck with your build. I took all my videos having to do with that boat and company down so you most likely won't find anything here. I build as a hobby for pleasure so they weren't a good fit for me. Tolman Skiff would have been a much better choice but as they say; hindsight is 2020.
@@mydreamboatproject Noted! Thank you for the quick reply, and please keep posting your adventures in boat building, regardless of the style boat. They are informative and fun. I love your enthusiasm and energy you bring and will absolutely keep following your channel!👍🏼
The Tolman skiff is an amazing boat ....for the Baering Straits and it's unique distances between waves ...from what I have heard was Tolmans main influence in design as he lived there....from what I gather it's the main reason most people didn't opt for them as the distance between waves in Alaska is different to other ocean's...??.. would it perform better in Alaska???.......I am sure that's just for big loads like commercial fishing for instance that such a technicality would make a difference.....good to have these facts however........looking forward to seeing your build.
Hi Michael, thanks for your comments. Not sure but I will look into it. We have a builder of Tolmans not far from me that I'll confer with about it soon. Keep in touch :-)
No the Tolman was mostly inspired by the Oregon power dories used for surf launch and landing which were very beam-forward...with a fare amount of side flare.....Renn first made a carolina type skiff, then made a stitch and glue version of the Oregon dory, then settled on the modified semi-v. The boat was designed to be small enough and light enough to run long distances on smaller hp engines while being very seaworthy in the open ocean or in the varied conditions in the nearshore environment in Alaska. Since then folks asked for plans for larger versions....however the Tolman Standard in the 18-20' class was the original. Its not a particularly unique hull shape necessarily - but it is a very light, and easy to build design. Most people DID opt for them ...in the sense that the Tolman is the most popular semi-v DIY skiff for good reason. Renn was from Homer Alaska on the Cook inlet...so nowhere near the Bering Straights.
Not sure, I misplaced the book a while back lol. It's an older book so I'm sure nothing is current is pricing and materials. Good luck, it's a nice boat :-)
Can't remember for sure as I did a search online for it, but Duckworks has it for $34.95 presently at: duckworks.com/tolman-alaskan-skiffs-plans/. I know it's a lot more on some sites as well. Good luck.
A very pretty book but not worth the money if you are getting it to help you to build one of their boat. Good if you have a fair bit of boat building experience. Bought and read it twice but not much wiser I certainly would not be able to build one based on this book.
Many have built it already from that book even though it can use some clearer drawings. They also have a forum online (Google Fishyfish) to get any additional guidance you may need from tons of others who built it from that book.
