Go down to devon and get some sun. Plymouth Argyle, Exeter City, and Torquay Unitef would be interesting. And they also have some even smaller clubs down there. . . Storyline: Plymouth is the biggest English City to never have a top level club.
Make NO mistake we are English 🏴 and very very proud of it. We were miles away in Macc for years and we simply accepted the shoebox we ‘put up with’ just to get us back closer to the city. Sealand Road will forever be our spiritual home and will never forget it. Our ‘new’ home is shoved away at the end of an industrial estate nearest pub well over a mile away and train station even further away, in the middle of nowhere is an understatement. Chester is a footballing City but 1,000’s get on the Mersey rail to Everton or Liverpool instead of hiking down bumpers lane industrial estate. For your records mate my Mrs farm was demolished to make way for the shoebox. Her front door was in the same place as the front door to the Blues Bar ! 🏴⚽️👍
Great watch as a Chester fan - well researched! Another fun fact is that the pheonix club was actually formed & fully funded by the fans and is still is to this day.. 100% fan owned! You mentioned about problems with differing covid rules for Wales/England, we’ve been fine on the football side as elite football is exempt from travel restrictions, but a local theatre sold tickets for an outdoor cinema at the ground a few months ago and had to cancel as the toilets were a few metres away... in Wales, and at the time you couldn’t travel into Wales! 😂🙈
Thanks very much, really appreciate that. Glad I got the facts right! And thank you for letting me know about that story. That's one of those weird stories that we've had to get used to over the past year! Cheers
I am an Everton season ticket holder but I am also a footy nut and was at Chester's game against Northwich Victoria when they got promoted back to the Conference after they had to start from the bottom of the pyramid. I only live up the road in Birkenhead but a strange quirk of this ground is that Chester's biggest rivals are Wrexham and when they play Wrexham at home the Welsh away Wrexham fans are in England and the home end with their most passionate fans are in Wales
For me, personally, I'm more interested in non league clubs because we all know the fundamental stories of the so called 'bigger' clubs. The non league football should become more popular in my opinion.
3 facts about my favourite club When Terry smith owned chester he made himself manager The deva stadium was first stadium to fit all the requirements by the Taylor report Chester city best moment was getting to the semi-final of the League Cup beating the league champions Leeds United on the way
Great video Sam, i never knew that Chester's ground was in Wales and England, and it's good to see that it's not just Scotland that has Phoenix clubs rising from the ashes, and you wouldn't have needed your jacket in Glasgow today it was really warm.
Good video mate, the scene where you videoed the plane landing at 3:25 that plane is landing at Broughton Airport and next to that runway is another football ground which hosts Airbus UK. They’re a Welsh football team who plays in the second tier of Welsh football but there ground is pretty nice so maybe it’s worth checking out.
Loved this video! I will admit I never did Chester away when they were in what is the EFL as we know it now (as a Walsall fan). Hereford United / Hereford FC might be another worth you visiting, plenty to talk about regarding that club and another old traditional ground.
It's about 30 years since my one and only visit to the Deva. The previous club, Chester City reached the semi finals of the League Cup in the 1974/75 season beating the then league champions Leeds United 3-0 during that cup run, while playing in the fourth division (tier4) at the time
As an massive Chester FC, born and bred. Loved the vid. The border apparently wat I believe runs half way thru the main stand including the offices where u walked in.
top work again sam, as someone who has chester close to my heart with my dad and his family being from and living there they are very close to my heart, i dont know if you got a chance to look around but the city is genuinely beautiful and the summer vibe in the city is the best! keep it up mate
Legend thanks mate! I didn't get too much chance to look around but hoping to go back eventually and get inside next time 🙏 all the best wirh your channel, keep it up! 💪
You would really think with Chester being a medieval City that they would really have a decent football side, there are lots of things to do in Chester I love visiting. The same with York which is even bigger than Chester.
Club was called Chester FC from 1885 to 1983 then City was added. Renamed Chester FC again when we were reformed in May 2010. If you enter the bar through the main entrance you will be in England. If you go to the toilets through in to the corridor you are in Wales. If you sit at the top of the main stand you will be in England. If you sit at the bottom of it you will be in Wales. It's a soulless place and isn't the same as it was years ago. We only ever get a decent crowd when we play Wrexham. It's absolutely dier in the Conference North. Only down in it because of two men, Mark Maguire and Jon Mccarthy.
I visited once on a Friday night with Walsall in 2006. Decent little ground with a good atmosphere. I never realised until recently I was watching a game in Wales
If you're looking for a nice ground go to pontcysyllte (worlds highest viaduct) as there's a football underneath it and while you're there go to Cefn druids (not too far) played in the fa cup back in the days of the old etonians and they ground is built on a quarry of Liverpool Town hall(something along that lines)
Normally see Chester play once or twice a season. Worth you visiting tranmere just down the road my mate works for the club. Lots of interesting murals and stuff. Also history like the roof from the cowshed end now being used at Carlisle. As a ground hopper I'd highly recommend mossley situated in Greater Manchester on the peninnes a real gem
looks a baron place sam just another tin football stadium no character whatsoever really enjoyed this one best football blog i have seen and i have seen a lot be lucky keep up the great work steve
The odd placement of the border is because it used to run along the line of the river but in the early 18th century the straight canal section was constructed half a mile to the west changing the course of the river. This was meant to keep the river navigable for shipping up to the Port of Chester which had been the major port on the west side of the country since Roman times. The Romans built their fortress Deva on the site as it was the last crossing point of the River Dee before the sea. Over the years the river has been silting up thus the plan to try and keep the port open. This land along the eastern side of the river became reclaimed for rich farming land
How about the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. You know the two tiered goal end stand. It is connected to the rugby stadium next door. In fact they use the same entrances and exits. Basically you come to a set of stairs. You go up the stairs you go to the upper tier of the stand in the Principality stadium stand. You go down the stairs you go down to the stand at Cardiff Rugby Clubs ground.
Actually went to Chester v Leamington when I was down there in 2019. Great club very friendly. Altrincham and there LGBT links with the Rainbow shirts a few years ago might be a good story to cover.
Hey mate, thanks for watching! I've made two Berwick videos before which I'll link below... ua-cam.com/video/VABpRu7UAYM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/a20UH_sLcQo/v-deo.html Cheers!!
Interesting tidbit, I had an ownership share in the team that the old Chester City lost to in their final ever game so I listened to that game on the radio. Ebbsfleet (my team) won 2-1 and Chester City went under a few weeks later
I just bet Chester fans I glad to have their own ground, whether it's in England or Wales. I can remember back In about 1993, going away to see my beloved West Brom vs Chester City. It was played at Macclesfield as Chester City didn't have a ground, not sure why they didn't. I just remember Albion had 3 sides of the ground and Chester City didn't have many fans at all.
We were in exile at Macclesfield while this ground was under construction, hence The Macc ground share, The Deva was originally supposed to be 15,000 all seater, not that we needed it that big, But due to time scale as usual we got ripped off and cheaper version was made instead. We got ripped off at Sealand Road , land was worth hell of a lot, sold down the river, Bastard owners from Manchester,
How about visiting Bradford City in mid May? It will be the anniversary of the fire. There are memorials in and around the ground - your vlog style would really lend to the poignancy and history of the event. Plus, City like many clubs have significant up's and down's over the years. Great videos - working my way through your back catalogue!
Looking on google maps it's only about 20 meters from one corner flag to English soil in the car park. I'm sure a few hoofed clearances have crossed the border! PS I believe Chester got in a spot of bother over Covid restrictions and the fact they played before the ban on football was lifted in Wales.
Google actually shows 99% of the stadium in wales with the border running through the office, leaving a tiny sliver in England along with some of the car park. Very strange border as they usually follow a natural landmark that is unlikely to move such as a water course.
*when any house/building/establishment straddles the border of 2 jurisdictions, the official deciding point is always the front door which is in England as are gates to the site therfore they have cheshire address and part of chester Council also patrolled by Cheshire police.
The previous Chester tried getting into the Welsh Premier League at one point, but were denied so wound up. The pitch invasion was indeed Eastbourne Borough, I remember it well since they are one of my local non-league teams. Great video as always 👍👍👍
Go to Wakefield Trinity the oldest professional sports stadium in the world, currently having a major redevelopment for the first time ever The fact it’s still in use and has been 150 years or so it’s worth a Visit
Luton was the most interesting stadium I ever went to. I'm not sure how much longer they will still be there. Maybe check out Brentford before it goes.
Ipswich Town bought Jon Walters from Chester City after playing them in the FA cup, he left after clashing with Roy Keane and was sold to Stoke and became a Republic of Ireland international 💙⚪
Don’t quote me on this but a pre season test event in 2020 was cancelled because the toilets were in Wales. Because Wales had different rules the event couldn’t go ahead.

The New Saints are a club affiliated to two countries. They are the current Welsh champions and play in Europe each year. Based in Oswestry,England, but play in Wales
They are an amalgamation of Llantsantffraid (a Welsh club) and Oswestry Town (an English club). Which became TNS,then The New Saints. They have played Liverpool in the Uefa Cup.
I wonder how they got planning permission to build the ground if they are having to navigate two potentially different planning laws Given they play in National League North doubt they played at all this season as the season was declared null and void Would be interesting to know how the fans felt about the phoenix club as I watched documentary about Bury FC and a lot of the fan base didn't take that kindly to the forming of the phoenix club
from what i remember growing up around then and going to see Chester play, most of the fans were pretty supportive of the phoenix club. Unlike some of these pheonix clubs, the original didn't fail through some series of well-meaning but flawed financial desicions or problems they could not do anything about, but instead the Vaughan family (owners of the club during their liquidation) were widely hated by the fans as their continual dodgy dealings (and eventual fraud convictions) pushed the club further and further under, with points penalities and fan frustration piling up until the inevitable ejection from the league. So after that, anything seemed preferential really.
Let me know where you want me to go next!

You must go to the old Bradford park AVE stadium, full of history and terrace that remain overgrown.
The odd placement of the border is because it used to run along the line of the river but in the early 18th century the straight canal section was constructed half a mile to the west changing the course of the river. The position of the river canalisation had more to do with the fact that land reclaimed on the English side of the river would be more valuable.
Chester up the seals 🦭
It’s a very interesting stadium! There loads of great ground in the North West and in looking forward to seeing you visit them 🙂
Definitely! Hoping to get to a few more soon!

Chester FC is ENGLISH... always has and will be... My mums team as she was from Chester...
When they play Wrexham, there's also a nationality as well as a local rivalry with the Chester fans making their Englishness strongly felt.
No mention of the current managers! (Former Salford City) managers. Great duo- good story as well considering they are joint managers!
Aye fair point! I'll say about that when I go back!
