    Hi Bruce, I came back to this video, because I had found that the Local Contrast module does a great job of sharpening, as does the Sharpening module. On coming to the High Pass module, before, I had discovered that I could not get rid of the gray scale treatment. So I came here again to find that I have to select a blend mode. Very helpful. My initial work with DT has been rudimentary, but I am getting better with each video. Thanks for your diligence and persistence.

    There are multiple ways to use the low pass. You can use it as a tone mapping module by setting the saturation to 0 and negative contrast (inverting the image basically) or to enhance the contrast of a certain scale of the image. I'll probably do a video sometime soon

      I find this really makes images pop esp on a cloudy day or lower light....there is a preset that comes with DT in this module called the contrast mask...I use it at about 75% opacity and like the look...sometimes i combine this with a little bit of high pass as well....in any case ....I think it works great....

    I've (incorrectly) used low pass to create 'fake' bokeh, thanks for the mentions and thanks for the link, now found and supported you :) (I was looking for the link the description rather than the video, I use a magnifier, so I might have missed it in the video before as might not have zoomed into that part :) ), thanks again.

    I've used the lowpass for a forced Bokeh or deeper of field, for a dreamy landscape. I use (usually) an inverted circle mask and with normal blending mode and gaussian. Never thought it was possible to soften skin with bilateral and overlay, cool trick

    Thenks for the Input! i`ve learned very much from your previous videos, now is maybe a time i can give something back... I`ve been using the lowpass as a means to create the Orton-effect. What i speciffically like about using it is the adjustability hat you don`t get with other methods and software. Cheers!

    • @audio2u
      @audio2u  5 років тому

      Hey JanÓ, what's an orton effect? And how are you doing it?

    • @paljano1
      @paljano1 5 років тому +1

      @@audio2u Hey Bruce, the Orton effect is a photo enhaceing method that brings an ethereal glow to the image. It`s heavily used in landscape photography. Here is a quick video explaining an easy way to achieve this look in photoshop ua-cam.com/video/hgEAI0WxflM/v-deo.html
      There are also other ways to achieve a similar look but they tend to be more complicated. Also in Photoshop it seems impossible to "dial in" the amount of blur and contrast after the layers have been changed. That`s why im so excited about daktable and the lowpass tool.
      With lowpass you can adjust blur, contrast and brightness even after the effect is applied.
      Hope this answers the question. Looking forward to your next video :-)

      No. On Linux, I use Hugin.

      @justmythought7658 4 роки тому +1

      That's one of the occasions when I turn on my Virtual Machine. Stitching ist so much easier with Windows programs. Autostitch is available for such a long time now and you just add your images and wait a few seconds. Or buy an old version of Phosothop Elements. Mine is still version 6 and it does the job easily. Hugin is still terribly complicated.

    Harry Durgin has a very interesting video on these filters, it will complement this work.

    • @rosencreuz
      @rosencreuz 5 років тому

      Harry is amazing with these two filters. He does almost all of his editing using only these two filters. IMHO, these filters are very low level, they give you a lot of control, but using them requires more experience and it takes more time. On the other hand, if you understand how they work, you can easily apply the same principles in gimp as well, whenever you need.

    the highpass as sharpener looks a lot better to me than the jpg output with the sharpen module - which seems to dull down everything (?) ... I've been using it how you showed, although I prefer hardlight and play with the contrast slider to get where I want to be... Good video Bruce

    Here is another really great use for the Lowpass filter - bring out the details in clouds/give clouds more contrast. Here is a longish video based on an older dt module: ua-cam.com/video/s0kjSvW93L0/v-deo.html

    In the Low Pass module, after you set Bilateral Filter, Uniformly and overlay, soften with jumps back to Gaussian. Is this intentional? Thanks Again for some excellent tutorials.

    Hi Bruce, not sure if you even considered to host your scripts in some localization management platforms, such as crowdin.com/ or translate.zanata.org/?dswid=-2234 then enable all the languages you could. Many platforms are free for open source projects.

    I recently tried using a high pass and low pass filter on the same image. I used a carefully drawn mask using a path for local contrast, contrast brightness and saturation, and high pass. I used the same mask invented for low pass.
    In a number of the photos in this project it worked perfectly. However, in some there is a halo around the primary subject. I'm not sure how to attach the original raw, sidecar, and final image files. How can I remedy this problem

    • @audio2u
      @audio2u  5 років тому

      Did you try playing with the feathering radius and mask blur sliders? That's probably where I'd start.

    • @emrg777
      @emrg777 5 років тому +2

      Claude if you go to the bilateral setting that reduces it alot and then play with brightness and opacity...also overlay is harsher or stronger so maybe softlight blend mode in this case....a few things to try anyway

    Great video Bruce, as always! You have a new patreon supporter :) I actually started out by throwing money at software to do my post processing. It was only after I found your videos, and the speedy power of Darktable, that I realized I had wasted $$$ on the others. Your videos truly are the de facto source for learning this wonderful bit of kit!
    Don't worry about pace... youtube makes it easy to speed up, or slow down, the playback (I typically watch at x1.25, not just yours... nearly all instructional videos!) A consistent pace is more important, something you do quite well!
    dtstyle.net really is a neat repository although it's made me aware that perhaps darktable could improve how it manages a larger collection; or maybe I'm missing something?

      Cosmo..try the preset called contrast mask that comes with DT....it really works nicely on image tone....I use it with bilateral instead of Gaussian and often use it overlay at about 75 %...you can tweak sat and brightness as well after that and get some really nice results...often I find just doing this and a little bit of sharpening is all an image needs.....There is a German video that I found that demonstrates it...I can't really follow it but it is where I came across the contrast mask preset...Tried to find it again for a link...it is an edit of black and white cows in a field....anyway I often use it instead of shadows and highlights module.....just FYI
