Learning to be a racing jockey can't be that hard, can it?

  • Ever thought jockeys have it easy? Ever slated a jockey?
We sent Sporting Life reporter Dom to Racing School with ex-jockey and former Union J member JJ Hamblett for a harsh lesson on the demands of race-riding.
Turns out it's intense...and, if you're as unfit as Dom is, hilarious!

To be a jockey is to be a top fit athlete...these guys and gals get up early in the morning to workout horses and race them in the afternoon..they are in constant battle to maintain their bodyweight and be in good shape to ride..so that's being twice as fit as the next person overall....to ride a 1000+ lb horse around a track at speeds of up to 40 mph or more takes control and domineerance in all aspects....in a second anything tragic can happen...jockeys are brave, athletic at the extreme, and very strong in their endeavors....I always wanted to be a jockey when I was young....but probably destiny didn't call those cards....but if a boy could still dream,I'd become a jockey and a great one.

september quest maybe I’d they don’t rely on the bit and beat their horses, then it would be a “sport”

My horse was a runner...he LOVED to open up to his max speed everytime I'd take him to the Sugarcane fields near my house. I would take him out on my English saddle when I wanted a good leg workout lol! It is very strenuous . Your legs have to be super strong for sure!
If you're wondering why I talk about him in past tense, is because he died at 22. I bought him as a 3 yr old. He was struck by lightning ☹️.

Haha this was fun. as a rider if i take a break for a week or so i can feel the burn. The non-rider will not be able to walk and never want to see a horse again, the ex-rider will feel it and love it and miss it and want to ride tomorrow.

The crouch position is very taxing on the cardio and pulmonary function. The Reagan administration had a study to determine the the fittest athletes. Jockeying was 3rd on the list

I'm sure jockeys are more athletic than normal people... but in the community of athletes from other sports, I played 2nd division pro soccer in brazil for 2 years and transitioned to 10 years of boxing when I was 21, I just don't see the comparison. I searched this video to see what kind of training jockeys do to have a better idea of their athleticism and conditioning before forming my own opinion. Please tell me there is more to this... I could do all these workouts when I was in highschool and it would be considered VERY light work... the mechanical horse seems like it would be hard for someone who has no experience. You would get tired quite quickly from trying to keep balance and from using improper form... but it doesn't seem like anything that can't be learned after perhaps 2~3 years of consistent training. Yes, there's dangers of falling off a horse... but that doesn't make someone an athlete.

I want to ask. Does horse racing jockey stability exist? If there is an example, what is it like. Please reply for a college thesis assignment

@@sicxrio1936 well I thought it is everywhere in Europe, but it surely isn't officialy a sport in my country. It is defined by law as "breeding and performance test of thoroughbred" and it is governed by ministry of agriculture and not ministry of sport, AFAIK the same goes for Italy and probably many other countries
