This is such an awesome video. I was a lifeguard on Lake Michigan for 8 years and have always found it to be a fascinating natural wonder. You are right, Lake Michigan can be incredibly dangerous. The statistics on drownings are very interesting. Most drownings occur along the Michigan shoreline because many beaches in the state of Michigan are not staffed with lifeguards. Rip currents (they technically are currents because lakes don’t have tides of any sort) are a contributing factor. Super scary to get caught in one, but lifeguards have been proven to significantly reduce drownings… some municipalities see them as an unnecessary expense, unfortunately. In my 8 years as a guard, the only ever drowning we saw on our beaches occurred after hours when lifeguards were gone, in rip current conditions or non rip current conditions. Sorry I got on my soap box there. Passionate about the subject. Thanks for the video.
I was pulled way off the shore in lake Michigan when I was a child. Thankfully there was a sandbar I made it to that I could just barely stand on and keep my head above water so I could recover my strength and swim back.

Having grown up in southwest lower Michigan, just wanted to say that lake-effect on Lake Michigan usually affects northwest/north central Indiana and southwest lower Michigan (most of which is called Michiana by us locals) and usually not the Chicago area itself, though it can happen there as well. Prevailing winds in the winter are almost always out of the northwest or west - the storms cross the lake, intensify, and then set up the snow bands we've come to know and love (?) so well. I’m in Marquette Michigan and my apartment is only a few blocks from Lake Superior but the funny thing as u said is it’s cold. I’d say it’s cold in there majority of the summer I try to go in there late June or July at best. But we have a tourist place where u can jump off rock cliffs called “Black Rocks” I agree it’s clear on Lake Superior and probably the least polluted out of all the Great Lakes because upper peninsula doesn’t have many major cities lots of country side and woods here. It’s beautiful here lots of people come here for college because of the outdoors and Lake Superior. I have visited near where the Edmond Fitzgerald was at near whitefish point by Paradise Michigan. I’m originally from the Sault Ste Marie area so I seen the Soo Locks in person by the border to Canada where u was talking about raising water levels for ships. As a previous south east Michigander who now lives in Toledo, I wish Lake Erie wasn’t so gross! Especially near maumee bay since it would be nice to visit the state park with a clean lake
After watching this Michigan video, I was thinking a really interesting video you could do is showing how all the land in what is now the United States broke down into different Native American tribes/nations before the Europeans arrived. You could use your laminated US map that you often draw on to show the borders between and the locations of the different tribes, and also write the different tribe names on your index cards and cut them up. Would be quite informative! 🙂 Also, I loved this Great Lakes video as a fellow Michigander (originally)
I've been thinking about this all day. I just am nervous about screwing it up. I don't want to be disrespectful to anyone, you know? Maybe I can figure something out.
@@Nofrillsasmr Oh, totally understandable that you don't want it to be disrespectful in any way...would be more of an educational video and relaxing drawing of borders and writing of tribe names. I would preface it with a disclaimer kinda like with your State of the Union video that it is non-political and just a basic depiction of pre-Euro North America and that there is lots more history involved. Your discussion of all the dealings with the tribes in this Great Lakes video was really interesting, and seemed very respectful 💕 Whatever you choose to do, I'm sure it will be a great video 🙂
Wonder if you have done one on the Finger Lakes? Just discovered you ans. Im hooked. Grew up vacationing on Lake O. It had bad rip currents too. I actually saw a man drown on the beach as a child. It was pretty traumatic

Technically, ships (liners or salties) can go all the way to Duluth, but the big boats (lakers) can only navigate the Upper Lakes-Huron, Michigan and Superior. They won’t fit through the Welland. They barely fit through the Soo.
I enjoy the Native American History of the Great Lakes. Theres so many different tribal groups and many of which have very fascinating histories. The languages spoken are dying out but yet are trying to be preserved. Huron is the French word for the Wendat people. Ontario is iroquoian word meaning large or great lake. Erie is the name of an Iroqioisn speaking people who lived in Ohio, NY and Pennsylvania. Mostly in the upper part of NY and northwestern Pennsylvania and Northern ohio. The real name is Kahkwa but given the name Riieronons by other Iroquoia groups. Michigan is an Algonquin word also meaning large lake. Most of the Indigenous peoples referred to lakes large body of water basically. Superior is the most deepest and dangerous lake of all the Great lakes. 1975 the Edmund Fitzgerald was an example of how strong the waves and currents were and the ship sank into the bottom taking along its crew. 1976 The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (a haunting song) was written by Gordon Lightfoot. Much of the Great lakes have mysterious stories about its depths and events that occured from the earliest occupation of the area to now

The caspian sea doesn't count as a lake since its not full freshwater, lake Baikal in russia is the deepest lake in the world and it has more water than the great lakes combined
Apologies. I only meant that they worked together with the French for many years to fight the 5 Nations who were trying to take the Huron’s land. This was my understanding anyway. By “friendly” I guess I meant they worked together. I do understand how bad it was for indigenous people. Thanks for your comment and the reminder!

Much of the Great lakes have mysterious stories about its depths and events that occured from the earliest occupation of the area to now
That's a lot of great info, very interesting. You might enjoy the video I made in November about the Fitz! Here's a link: ua-cam.com/video/f6dBHyuV0KY/v-deo.htmlsi=DhP4r9HtPuY9xKSi
If somebody hasn’t, instead of surface area, usually it is square miles (sq mi)
Don't you think it can go either way? I mean, don't you measure the surface area in sq miles. As opposed to volume.
Square Miles is a measurement of surface area…
Oops my bad guys
as a Michigander I can say this video was accurate
Cool, thanks!
what about the apostle islands
I’m not that familiar. I’ll have to look them up. Thanks for watching!
Been in Lake Huron some good beaches in western Ontario. However being from Toronto only look at Lake Ontario lol don’t wanna go in there it’s toxic.
Oh and I was in vacation in sauble beach i didn’t you had cottage near there wow
We just rented a cabin on the Bruce Peninsula. It was great!
Tge caspian seas technically is neither a sea or a lake, but its also a lake and a sea at the same time
Sounds like an old school riddle.
Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake by volume.
You are a very beautiful woman and have a great voice and videos are aalways interesting. Thanks for doing this for us.
Wow! Thank you for this comment!
The caspian sea doesn't count as a lake since its not full freshwater, lake Baikal in russia is the deepest lake in the world and it has more water than the great lakes combined
Interesting! Thanks for taking the time to write this!
Lake Baikal is absolutely insane. Although isn't the biggest lake by area it's other stats are mind blowing!
8:58 never assume colonists were friendly with indigenous people
Apologies. I only meant that they worked together with the French for many years to fight the 5 Nations who were trying to take the Huron’s land. This was my understanding anyway. By “friendly” I guess I meant they worked together. I do understand how bad it was for indigenous people. Thanks for your comment and the reminder!
@@Nofrillsasmrgirl ignore this troll they hating for no reason
Indigenous people weren’t always friendly with colonists either. Some tribes were at war with each other for 500 years before colonization of NA.
Being a indiana boy I know lake Michigan lol
There are sand dunes in Indiana on Lake Michigan too, right?
@Nofrillsasmr yes there is and the best dunes is Mt Baldie
Isn’t that an acronym?
You mean HOMES. I think it's both. Mnemonics are used to remember or learn things.
@@Nofrillsasmr ah ok, it was super late and I was super sleepy. But I couldn’t sleep. Had to learn more about THE GREAT LAKES! 😂😂 thanks for the info as always
@@chemicalsavage9405 they are great!
Can you do a video reading the Bible? 🙏
Caspian Sea is not freshwater
Good to know. Did I say it was? I don't remember that, oh well, I make a few mistakes here and there, it's my brand. lol
I stopped watching as soon as she said coastline. Seas have a coastline. Rivers have a shoreline.
Actually, rivers have banks. Lakes do have shorelines, but because the Great Lakes are so large (and divide the U.S. and Canada) they are sometimes referred to as “The Third Coast”! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@Nofrillsasmr I'm sorry.
Accepted. Thanks!
Come visit a shoreline of the Great Lakes! It’s so cool! It feels like a beach connected to the sea, often you can’t see the shoreline on the other horizon(depending on where you are) and you don’t have to worry about any biting creatures!
No sharks!!
Wow, you’re really bad at this. NOT really whispering, just talking, laughing too much, too much energy. Nope.
Wow, that’s not very nice. I read this just as I’m off to sleep. Great. 😕
I completely disagree with you. Linda creates amazing ASMR 😊
