The milky way was not necessarily discovered. What was really discovered, was other galaxies, by using Cepheid variable stars. Once we figured out how far away those weird things in the night sky were, is when we then classified our own galaxies and all the ones after. I think in the mid 1920s is when this great big debate happened, where the scientists at the time came together with the results of the calculations by Hubble (I think) when he demonstrated that the weird things that sort of looked like stars in the sky were beyond hundreds of light years but to hundreds of thousands of light years and some even beyond. It was a very big moment for humanity and its understanding of the scale of the universe but it's not really taught much in that way.
Ooh its always interesting to see the sentences other languages/countries use to remember facts. Cause in German, the sencence is „Mein Vater erklärt mir jeden Sonnabend unseren Nachthimmel“ (literally: my father explains (to) me every Saturday our night-sky). It used to be “our nine planets” when Pluto was still there. We also remember the compass points by the sentence “never wash without soap” xD
I learned the very old-fashioned phrase: Mary's Violet Eyes Made John Sit Up Nights (Planning). Planning was added, then removed. I still use it. The other one I've heard most often is My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas (changed to Nachos), which is what most people my age and younger know.
@@Nofrillsasmrit is not the dominant force keeping it together. Dark matter is, it on its own can't explain why our Galaxy or any other galaxy spins as fast and holds as well as it does together
Great video, amazing voice! Fun fact: I was today years old when I learned a method/ methods to memorize order of the planets 😢😅... huge fan of your channel btw 🙏🏽
It's crazy to remember that our solar system is tilted to it's side unlike we usually see in the pictures and the Sun is just draging us all along with it lol.
You might be thinking of Socrates who was put to death? Galileo was given a life sentence of house arrest. As for the falling feather thing, the feather falls slowly because of air resistance, if there were no air in the way then the feather would fall the same speed as a stone. A better example would be to drop a soccer ball and a bowling ball, as air resistance wouldn't have as big of an effect on a soccer ball as on a feather. If you look up here on UA-cam something like "astronaut feather hammer", David Scott actually demonstrated on the Moon that a hammer and feather fall at the same speed.
@@Nofrillsasmr Sadly it's grainy Moon video from the 70s or whatever, it'd be pretty wild in person to see a feather drop like a rock! It would also be strange not to be able to hear anything going on around you, just whatever pumps and gizmos are running inside your spacesuit. I'd be chattering on the radio nonstop just to keep from going crazy out there.
I heard it as "my very educated mother just served us nine pies" 93 baby here, not sure why this educated mother is giving us so many desserts but oh well
I learned the planets from that one Drake & Josh episode where they sing a song to remember what’s the eighth planet in the solar system lol, I still sing it in my head every time I have to recall them
I’m going to look that up, I do better memorizing with songs! Ok, ok, so there is new documentary called “Quiet on Set” about all the stuff that went on with the kids in all those Nick shows. Sounds like it might be good, but dark.
I’m assuming you’ve seen the images from James Webb showing how many more galaxies exist than we’ve ever seen before, but if you haven’t then it will blow your mind a zillion times over

love the explaining style videos
I’m so glad! Thanks!!
I love how Mars is so accurately mapped. A feat only to improve once Starship gets there

I know! I can’t believe I forgot!! I thought I was being so smart with my mnemonic device.🤪
Jupiter: am I a joke to you?
😂 great video! I love your soft spoken voice and your energy!

Another great video! Fun fact: NASA has a concept mission scheduled to visit Alpha Centauri in 2069.
Interesting! I hope I live that long!
Yes, Sagitarrius A* keeps our galaxy together.
You bet it does! 😊

@Nofrillsasmr yes defo worked for me and I'm 36 now and it still works. 🤣 the only thing I do remember from school.

Eat the desserts. Mom’s know best! 😂
Everything is more extreme in space.
And no one can hear you scream!! 🙀
Jupiter has been kicked out of the Solar System.😮

Ok, I’ll go check them out. I do think I’ve seen them, but I don’t remember exactly.
Huh, either coffee was pretty expensive back then or that was some fancy coffee. $4.49 is about what I'd expect to pay for that much coffee in 2024!
Right? I know, that would have been pricey back then!
How you forget earth's big brother?!
I know! So sad!!

Thank you!
My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas was what I was taught.
Sounds yummy! 🤤
And Jupiter??
Damn it just ends though??!!!
Yeah, I dropped the plate and it crashed so I had to stop it short. Sorry about that.
So we're just going to gloss over Jupiter I guess...
I make mistakes sometimes - it's just the way it is with me. lol
Ummmm..Jupiter?
Oh nooo!! I forgot “just”!!! Ahhhh!!
