  • On Wednesday 26 May 2021, Irish fishers, men and women, took part in a spectacular flotilla of fishing vessels to Cork Harbour, organised by the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation.
It was in protest at recent cuts to quotas and other policies that are sabotaging their industry.

I live in the south east of England, and have watched the harbours and beaches empty of fishing boats, the chandler's disappear, boat engineers vanish, fishmongers close. In the chippy, the cod comes from the north, despite the presence of good stocks in the Channel. Yet foreign vessels can be seen fishing offshore, sometimes only a few hundred yards out.

Sadly it wont be long before the Irish fleet will be cut to a quarter of its original size in favour of the other EU fleets and there nothing you will be able to do , but I wish you all the best for trying .

Whilst you are in the EU, they are EU fish, not Irish fish. Interestingly most EU boats do not report correctly. If you leave, you will be threatened with not being able to sell fish to the EU. Enjoy.

Hi Mark. I don’t think many are talking about leaving. Having a market within easy reach is fundamental. The English have learned that the hard way.
I hear what you say, but I’m not sure it stacks up. It’s a bit like saying that French vineyards are EU vineyards, not French vineyards. How far would the Irish get if we tried to claim our rightful share of the EU vineyards in France?? Sean

Why can't the Irish boats be registered in France or Spain, to avoid quotas?

Ireland it is no longer your waters it's the EU's. There is no such thing as an Irish Border it's the EU's when are you going to realise this ?. You wanted EU membership, this is the price you have to pay for it. Suck it up Ireland you are now merely a semi autonomous region of Europe, you are NOT an Independent Nation State anymore.
