Classic Bird at 4:10 high fiving Ewing for the block by a Knick player, I remember a game where he shot a 3 in the face of an opponent and then that opponent high fiving Bird
Everyone remembers the steal by Henderson in game 2 of the 84 Finals !! For good reason ! And Magic running clock out and Macadoo and the Parish steal ! But in overtime down 121-120 Scott Wedman hit an 16-18 foot baseline tear dropping jumper that hit nothing but net and gave the Celtics a 1 point lead. That was one of the sneakiest biggest shots in Celtics history and I just like pointing it out cause it should not be forgotten !! It was a huge shot !!!!
This is the Larry Bird I remember. I was a Pistons fan, a Kareem fan, a Dominique fan, a Magic fan and my teachers were from Indiana. 86 is the year I decided to be a Bird fan. I couldn't take it any more. It seemed like the Celtics won every game.
Thanks for the upload Fatal!!! What a team the 86 Celts were-so unselfish-I think best ever. Bird at this point could do whatever he wanted and just toyed with the opposition. Nobody has had his all around game. Post up skills were HUGE, he could shoot with either hand, pass with either hand and had unreal court vision. Bird could shoot long range or distribute the ball to a shooter that he "knew" was in his range-Point guard mentality in a scoring and shooter's big body.+rebounding skills-MVP!
Back when you were still allowed to do so, this is around the time when Larry started to make $5 bets with fans at away games on the sidelines that he would accomplish certain things and objectives throughout the game just to give himself an added incentive to take on a doubter and to make things more interesting for himself.
The one specific story I really remember that stands out is a bet Larry made with a fan at the start of a game that he wouldn't bank in a 3 point shot during the game. As the 4th quarter started to wind down and the Celtics were well out in front, coach took Larry out and he went back to the bench to enjoy the win. Then as Larry was sitting in his seat his eyes met the fan he had talked to before the game, and he could see the fan saying, "Hey Larry, you owe me five bucks!" and Larry immediately said, "Oh shoot, I forgot the bet!" and ran right back up the sideline and told KC Jones he was going back into the game. Larry took one shot and kissed it off the glass from 3 point range and then took the $5 from the man. Just unreal. That was back when you could still wear your jewelry on your neck....those were like the very final days of them really letting the boys be the boys...
More of tragedy. But the 80's celtics was some sort of basketball white powerhouse! Bird, McHale, Walton, Ainge, Wedman, Sichting, Kite. If Cowens, havlicek and Maravich played together with them, just WOW.
Really Boston. Totally unreasonable. The sequence starting at 1:19. And its not like NY wasnt playing legit D but what could they do? Best team of all time 85-86 Celtics.
I think Larry was prob pissed that, for the second time in a row, Parish blew an easy two by coming in with weak shit instead of just slamming it down.
Yes! Bird described Wedman as THE sharp shooter on the team. Remember Wedman went 11/11 shooting against the Lakers? I think it was the Memorial Day Massacre. Wedman had like 4 three pointers? Wedman was also the fella that convinced Bird to run the Shamrock Classic. Ya gotta listen to the interview. Funny as heck. Anyways a week later his legs were dead andBird figured he’d have a bad shooting night against Atlanta. He scored 60pts.
The 86 celtics would sweep the 96 bulls. Facts. There are many times Bird had a T/D mid way thru the 3rd quarter and left the game. But in the 4th he was the a friggin assassin. No better clutch 4th quarter player ever. Tragic too that Walton could not stay healthy. The pick and roll between Bird and Walton is just pure basketball magic. What other center could pass the rock like Bill?
Rough night for Parish. Old Walton>young”er” Parish. Young Bird + young Walton would have been unstoppable. Bird could have been drafted in the 77 maybe 78 if not for him quitting Univ and working as a garbage man for a while in French lick. Then starting again in Indiana state. Many people don’t know what LB33 had to overcome to become an NBA player
The angle of this footage helps you realize just what a big dude Bill Walton was. He towers over everyone on the court and he's pretty bulked out too. He even makes Ewing look small.
Not true, the 85-86 Knicks were one of the best Defensive teams in the NBA that year, the Knicks were ranked #1 in opponents points per game in the 85-86 season and 5th out of 23 in defensive rating, so they were a defensive powerhouse.
Bird owned Jordan (swept him twice in the playoffs). I can't make all sorts of flowery arguments; but that's the reality. Jordan was the third best player on his own college team. Bird took a bunch of nobodies to an undefeated season and a title game. And don't get into that ring nonsense lest I have to tell you that mean Robert Horry is the 2nd best player of all-time. And Russell has more rings than fingers.
Knowing that Bird and Patrick became best friends during the Dream Team enemble is quite amazing. As Barkley put it, who’d a thought white dude from Indiana would be besties with a brotha from Queens. They were known as Harry and Larry. As anyone that knows Bird, he could really pound down a few cold ones. Barkley never feared Bird until he saw him drinking LOL. I think I read this Chuck Daly’s book. Great stuff in it.
Man, Parish was really dogging it this game. Doesn't box out Ewing at 0:06 and gets dunked over because of it. At 3:57 and 4:14 he blew two easy baskets by coming in weak instead of slamming it down. And at 4:21 he dropped a pass out of bounds drawing a "Fuck!" out of Bird as he was running back up the court. Chief just looks listless and bored in this one.
You're full of it. Bird took the nobodies to an undefeated season (25-3) the season before. When Jordan was unleashed (crappy teammates) in the NBA he was 0-5 at even having a winning season. And you wanna pretend Jordan is more clutch than Bird__ "I'd give the ball to Jordan for a shot to win the game. I'd give the ball to Bird for a shot to save my life." - Pat Riley
@MerkinMuffly Similar to '08 with Pierce. Paul had the ball at the top of the key, Lebron reached and got a steal then went and dunked it, on his was back up the court Pierce gave him a high five.
To Alec Tapia. You are just like the rest of MJ fans, brainwashed by the media. In the 86 playoffs Bird had more assists, more rebounds, higher fg% and same amount of blocks. Jordan took 95 shots in 3 games! Bird took only 53 shots. If Bird takes 95 shots, he outscores MJ due to higher fg%. Do some research before you make comments. Again in 87 Bird outplayed MJ. Bird had more rebounds, more assists, higher fg%, higher FT%, higher 3pt% and again ball hog MJ took 84 shots in 3 games, Bird only took 45. Bird would again have outscored him if he took 84 shots. BTW: MJ missed (49) more shots than Bird even attempted (45)! MJ shot 42% in that series. It wasn't even close in either year. Bird clearly outplayed MJ, MJ got a lot of media attention because of his point totals, but he missed so many shots that the Celtics let him keep shooting. Read some books, McHale has stated that MJ was so selfish and wouldn't pass so they knew they were going to sweep them.
+George Wagner MJ's play and big numbers always reminded me of Wilt. Wilt would average 50pts ? 50!.....but Russels Celtics always got past them. Hoop is a team sport and why I always admired Bird and Magic. Both were grounded in the style of selfless play. SOOooo enjoyable to watch.
Bird made guys like Gamble, Bagley, Pinckney, Roberts, Brown, Kleine, and Schicting. They were horrible when they were on other teams. Bird made them decent. Pippen, Harper, Kukoc, Paxson and Grant all got better without MJ.
The difference between 80's Celtics and Lakers was...Jabbar...the rest of the cast were pretty much equal...Bird and Magic, Mchale and Worthy, Ainge and Scott, DJ and Cooper...But Parish and Jabbar was a big difference.
I'm pretty sure that this is the game Rondo "bested" last season...by having all 3 stats at 14 or 15 of all 3 stats although Bird's points were higher. Poor Parish though lol wow
Commentators are Gil Santos (NE Patriots play by play until his retirement in 2012) and former Celtics point guard and Hall of Famer Bob Cousey until the 3:33 mark when the broadcast changes..
Btw i have Bird 3 all-time behind Magic and MJ...What they were all able to accomplish while bringing their sport to a global fanbase earns all three a spot firmly in the top 5 all-time...Doesn't mean you have to hate MJ and minimize his accomplishments over your jealousy that he surpassed your lover in every way and then all but erased everyone else's bid for the No.1 spot in NBA history...It's pathetic how you can try to make 3 rings more special than 6,that my friend is truly delusion
I never said rings were everything but they should be part of the evaluation process esp. when players like Bird,MJ,Russell etc. have so much impact on a game for their respective teams...(Horry's rings are irrelevant bc we all know he was a role player on title teams, not the same as the lead role MJ,Bird etc. played) Secondly, if you want to ignore rings then we have to ignore team success altogether, that means BOS beating CHI is irrelevant to an argument about MJ vs Bird, so make up your mind
Btw Jordan played for Dean Smith who made MJ play in a very confined off. system that hindered most of the ability he would later show in the NBA while Bird was a solo artist on a crappy team that played in a crappy conf.(nowhere near the strength of the ACC that Jordan faced)and Bird choked in the Final game vs Magic where MJ hit a clutch shot to win his team the championship..Another difference between Bird and MJ,MJ always came through in the clutch,Bird was less reliable and pressed at times
I'm not the one losing sleep over the fact my fav. player has been washed away by someone better,i'm not the one who has to conjure up conspiracy after conspiracy to level the playing field between MJ and Bird, despite the fact MJ's resume is better than Bird's, despite the fact most of Bird's contemporaries agree MJ is the GOAT. So go ahead maybe if you dream hard enough it'll become reality, just try to ignore the padded walls around you lol
Well it's been 20 years since Bird's retirement and 14 years since MJ's retirement and History still favors Jordan so how long are you willing to wait?
And you can't really say 0-5 because under what criteria do the first three seasons of MJ's career have in common with his last two? MJ was a superstar on the rise in his first three seasons, making the playoffs all three times, With WAS he was a legend coming back for a third stint in the NBA on his way out the door and missing the playoffs...In that case Larry Bird was 0-10 in seasons he didn't win the title lol, which is one more than MJ haha
Im not making excuses for the Jordan-led Bulls being swept by Bird's Celtics...Your the one making excuses for why Bird is obviously a lesser player than MJ...Just look at the Resumes kid. Scoring Titles,Championships,Memorable Clutch Moments,Steals,Blocks,Def.Player Honors and Awards,Global acknowledgement that he is the greatest to ever live by fans, teammates, and opponents..Have your two series,i'll take the rest and win every time...
Wow, so by saying 0-5 your looking past his 6-0 mark in the finals smack dab in-between that 0-5 mark, the fact he won titles in 6 of his 15 seasons(11 Full seasons in Chicago). While Bird's punk ass only won 3, but no doubt you've made tons of excuses to why Bird flamed out and ignore Bird's many seasons he left w/o a ring lol. Your double standards for the two players is hilarious...You discount every success MJ ever had and magnify his first three seasons in the league and his last two haha
Bird did not sweep MJ, the Celtics did. MJ outplayed Bird individually in those series...Bird won immediately in the NBA yes but he and Magic Johnson entered the league at a much easier point when the league was in transition from no-talent,no-dynasty NBA into the most dynasty and talent-laden era in NBA history. Two, had Larry Bird and his celtics ever made it deep enough in the playoffs in the late 80's-early 90's the Bulls and Michael would have happily returned the favor and swept Larry
Larry Legend putting on a CLINIC!
Classic Bird at 4:10 high fiving Ewing for the block by a Knick player, I remember a game where he shot a 3 in the face of an opponent and then that opponent high fiving Bird
That was hilarious!!!!! hhahahaha. Larry just did whatever he wanted out there and had fun doing it
The passing sequence at 1:30 mark was so unselfish 1986 greatest team ever. Great upload!!
+Larry Legend 1 That was seven passes. The word unselfish does not do justice.
I'm a laker fan but Larry is one of my favorite players of all time, he was amazing.
Feel the same about Magic. Remember when they put Magic the rookie in center? He absolutely burned them.
Everyone remembers the steal by Henderson in game 2 of the 84 Finals !! For good reason ! And Magic running clock out and Macadoo and the Parish steal ! The Greatest Player on the Greatest Team.
"Larry has yet to score" is why Bird is the GOAT! Why you may ask. Because Bird's unselfishness allowed him to set his teammates up for success. 😊
It one of the greatest shames in professional sports that Bill Walton couldn't stay healthy.
Or Larry, for that matter.
More of tragedy.

Lol yea
I don’t agree. I think that Lebron could hold his jockstrap

Best team of all time 85-86 Celtics.
Didn't hurt they had 5 Hall of Fame players in Brid, McHale, Parish, Johnson and Walton. Fun team to watch that year.
@MrBruinman86. They weren't in the HoF at the time. It was *this* execution that got them there.
That finish on 1:51 is underrated...Bird makes a cut in the lane and finishes DJ's pass in one quick motion before Ewing can react.
What a joy to watch this kind of basketball....what a passing clinic ..
Did anyone else notice that at 4:15 Bird high fives Ewing after Parish gets his shot blocked?
Yess jajajajajaja
I think Larry was prob pissed that, for the second time in a row, Parish blew an easy two by coming in with weak shit instead of just slamming it down.
hey yeah,,thanks.hahaha
😂
(4:10) Bird and Ewing, rivals not enemies.
Larry Bird was the best basketball player in NBA history.
I've heard Wedman was about the only guy that could really challenge Bird in HORSE lol. He could fill it up when he got it going.
J. Clint Lewey great pure shooter!! Game 1 of nba finals 1985 he was 10 for 10
Yes! Bird described Wedman as THE sharp shooter on the team. Remember Wedman went 11/11 shooting against the Lakers? I think it was the Memorial Day Massacre. Wedman had like 4 three pointers? ‘86 Celtics. Highest basketball IQ team in history. Larry Joe was a triple double machine.

God I love this camera angle.
It's like actually like being at the game in a decent seat.
This is a classic example of why this team was one of the best of all time... They were totally unselfish and with four Hall of Famers down low...

Bernard King and the Knicks took the 84' celtics to 7 games. By 86' they were a shell so crushed by injuries.
Celts running 4-5 White guys on the court together most of the time and wearing the Knicks out.

Seriously, it cheapens that team's accomplishments when you talk like that. Forget about black and white. Focus on the game.
@Randall Denison when did I mention those two when speaking about race?

MJ outplayed Bird individually in those series...Bird won immediately in the NBA yes but he and Magic Johnson entered the league at a much easier point when the league was in transition from no-talent,no-dynasty NBA into the most dynasty and talent-laden era in NBA history. Two, had Larry Bird and his celtics ever made it deep enough in the playoffs in the late 80's-early 90's the Bulls and Michael would have happily returned the favor and swept Larry
