Like the video which is helpful to understand how to replace a starter on the polaris. thanks! We are the manufacturer of starter in Taiwan. Produce it but not much idea of detail when installing.
A few vids for this n many short cuts they take to not remove many parts. Well I've done em. This vid removing the air box is the way to go for the ease of access! Great vid thanks
Thanks Man, I just priced a starter at $420! The garage is going to charge me another five to $600! I may try to clear out enough room in my garage, and start disassembling my wheeler to get a little sweat equity....
Starter cost way less than that. Did mine last year think it was $80 to $90 if even that much. Dealers are a rip off to do work and need to be avoided if at all possible. I have done all my own work on bushings, bearings, ball joints etc. May take you a little time but it’s worth it. Plus you know what you have done and can do it right yourself. Half the time stuff is done like crap at a dealership anyway. Just buy yourself some decent tools and you will do fine
I replaced the relay on my quad because it started the day prior but the old relay would click and I would wiggle it and sometimes it would work so I ordered a new one, I put the new relay in and it just clicks I’m thinking my starter it bad , did your relay just click when your starter went bad?
I noticed you didnt change the pilot bushing back of bendix .to do this pack bushing with grease take a yellow handled nut driver put grease also in the end .stick in bushing and a couple taps with hammer will push bushing out using hydrolic preasure. replace bushing turning a 9/16s deep socket backawards and tap it in. same way you would remove a pilot bearing from a preasure plate on a car or truck.
It is easier with the clutch cover off. You dont need to take the flywheel cover off. But you might want to. To inspect the bendix gear that drives the starter to flywheel. The bendix will come out without removing the flywheel.
@@TitaniummanGarage thanks to your prying idea, I change the starter, but still just sound and no start. Next I’ll be changing that Bendix. I did not know about that.
The gear that connects the starter to the flywheel on mine keeps sliding back and dosnt make contact with the starter or the flywheel any ideas how to fix or if I’m missing a spacer or something
There is a washer or spacer behind the bendix gear. I would just replace it. It's like 15 bucks on ebay. The spring wears out on them. Sounds like that's what you have going on.
Bottom bolt is the worst part of the whole starter changing install starter roll it towards the front of the bike install lower starter bolt roll backwards into place pry slightly on back clutch cover start bolt by hand some suggest going and buying 3/16"-1/4" shorter bolt for ease of lower bolt replacement .
hey good video thnx for sharing .I went and got a shorter bolt threads in fine but cant get it started with starter in.might have to remove that air duct thing witch is a pain in the ass itself.
I have a pair of Scrambler 2001 400 4x4, easy : 1. remove pull start cover to access 2 starts bolts (pray engine up a bit to remove cover's long 10mm bolts) 2. remove 2 10mm bolts off engine, leave starter bracket on. Install is a breeze. ( I modified the far bolt hole to a U hole, so just lose the bolt without remove it, making future starter R/R super easy)
Ya it's real easy when you have half the bike tore apart already, otherwise it's a ROYAL PITA!! I would never stoop low enough to own a polaris atv EVER!! They are designed and built by a bunch of drunken idiots on a friday afternoon!!

Nice. Always good to see how things work or get installed after building them. I know first hand.
My happy 2002 400 always starts till today, just clicks. Ordered a new motor, watching your vid to do it.

What was your problem? I’m getting a grinding noise when turning key with intermittent start. Getting worse and worse
GREAT VIDEO! THIS HAS HELPED ME TERMENDOUSLY!

What you talking about?
@@The_Native_wolfAK its a easy way to get the bushing out that the gear shaft runs on
Thank you!! I'm knees deep into this and you have some great tips.
He installed new bendix. New bendix has new bushing.
Great video Sir. My 2000 Predator 400 has issue with cranking, or clicks with a full battery. Bad starter or bad wire connections?
Short starter to check it, if not good replace starter.
Thanks! Going to tackle the project right now!
Worked out great thanks for the tutorial. I knew what tools to grab so I wasn't in and out of the tool box!
I have a 2007 500 x2 that keeps bogging down and shutting off; I can’t figure it out any suggestions.
That dam bottom bolt kicked my but today! Ima try taking it out with the bolt in like you did. Do i HAVE to take off the flywheel cover though?

Does the negative cable have to be on the starter ? Mine didn’t have it on the starter ( 2002 Polaris Sportsman 400 )
My 2000 Xpedition 425 doesn't have the negative cable either.
very good instraction, I like wos helpful ,good luck andrew
Glad you enjoyed it
Ive got two down, same prob, 02 exp 400 and 99 sports 500 , nightmare scenario 😢
I learned how to do it and that video was fine , but that dam bolt , crazy.
Is this for a 1997 sportsman 400? That’s what I have and I’m looking to replace it.
2 stroke the starter will be at the bottom of the engine.
@@TitaniummanGarage Awesome, thank you!
Great video man, super helpful!
Ok did who designed this starter placement on the bolts?
Right! They can be a pain.
Good job, buddy, very helpful vid, really appreciate it, you Da MAN👍
Glad it helped

At holds the bendix in ?
S it the same for 02 exp 400 ?
Im wondering if i need to do this when i start my scrambler its a loud rattle coming from the starter location any ideas ?
That be my guess.

Yeah. It's a pain in the ass. I don't know why Polaris put the clamp on the other side.
Best way to cut the air duct, pipe from hell
How do you remove that thing that engage to start the four wheeler
The Bendix Gear? once the stater is out, pull the pull start cover off and move it over and out.
Thank you for the vidéo!🙂
Sorry, It is a Scrambler 400 4x4. the starter is not able to take out from the top, could be done from bottom.
Yes. The easiest way is to pull the clutches and rear cover. you can access the bolts better. Or lay it on its side.

Well...you must have owned one or how would you know?
be nice if a japan guy designed it .i am getting rid of mine lol

So is there a gasket for that front cover?
The pull start cover? Yes.
Was the new gear as loose as the old one
The cover will hold the bendix gear in tight.
