Glad you’re back but totally disagree about Lana and this album. No, this isn’t Norman or Ultraviolence, but she’s growing as an artist and singer. Her sound is as distinct and prolific as Adele’s. Her lyrics perk up your ears from time to time with their cheekiness, but she is a tier above most of the singer-songwriters of her generation. Just sayin. My favorites on Blue Banisters are “Arcadia”, “Textbook” and “Wildflower Wildfire”.
As a hardcore Lana fan myself, i can fully understand and nor am I surprised by the fact that you didn't care for this album all that much. What I take issue with some of the artist comparisons you made. I get the Julia Holter and Weyes Blood comparisons (I've actually heard a decent bit of their respective discographies which I've really liked myself) and I've also listened to a decent bit of indie country myself (Thanks for putting me onto those records from Vivian Leva & Riley Calcagno and Mac Leaphart respectively, by the way) and can grasp those parallels too. I don't get the Taylor and especially the Billie Eilish comparisons at all though but that probably just personal preference as a) Taylor's artistic appeal has never fully clicked for me even though i can recognise why people do like her and that she is indeed talented and b) I seem to be one of the very few people that thinks that Happier Than Ever was a massive letdown in comparison to When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?.
@@icebear4181 I thought they were more regarding the baroque pop/soft rock stylings that Lana’s using on this album and how Mark is drawing parallels between it and Folklore, Evermore and Happier Than Ever in terms of the instrumental pallet
@@michaellevandowski631 You may be right, but I think lumping all those artists together is a bit weird. They may sometimes create like a similar vibe, but they’re going about getting there in a very different way from each other. So while there are a lot of relaxed, mid-tempo songs on those albums, I wouldn’t go about grouping them together.
I watched 10 mins without any flattering commentary on her songwriting skils- let me remind everyone seeing this comment: Lana identifies herself as "singer/songwriter" with always emphasis on "songwriter". Her music should not be approached with the same perspective we approach other artists who identify first as singers. Delivered with kindness and cordiality.
So you watched up to just around the point I started talking about the writing at length - interesting. And no, Lana Del Rey does not get kid gloves because of her focus on songwriting - you still have to deliver the lyrics in some shape or form, it's the complete package. And funnily enough, most of her diehard fans tend to lose their shit when I go in on the writing at the same level and depth I take for all other singer-songwriters, so... careful what you wish for?
Sorry to hear you had to deal with all that BS, Mark. I'm glad your channel survived, and that you're back to posting. You've put me on to a lot of great albums, and I can't wait to hear even more.
It goes to show you about the subjectivity of taste.. I love this record but my least fave tracks are two of your faves, and my faves include your least favorite tracks. Glad to see you back.
Glad that your channel is back to a state where you feel comfortable posting videos again. I can't imagine have to deal with what you dealt with. I came over mostly to show your channel some support after what you've been through since I'm not a huge Lana Del Rey fan. That being said I have been looking for some more mellow, or more so just not as heavy and harsh, music to listen to as I have been listening to a lot of alternative rock, punk rock, hard rock, heavy metal, and extreme metal over the pandemic. I don't know if Lana is the artist for me though. I saw here infamous performance on SNL that got her tour dates canceled live and I don't know if it was the performance specifically but I didn't like the songs she performed (Video Games was one of them). The other singles that I have heard, "Summertime Sadness (remix)", "Lust For Life", "Mariner's Apartment Complex" and the cover of "Doing Time", I do enjoy to some degree. From you and Mic the Snare it seems like this is not the album to check out if I wanted to get into her music. Side note for anyone wondering here are some of the bands and albums in the pop/indie/alternative sphere that I have already heard for anyone looking to give me suggestions for softer music: CHVRCHES, Magdalena Bay - Mercurial World, Emma Blackery - Girl In a Box (Thank you Mark for alerting me to this album from your On The Pulse video), Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher, Carly Rae Jepsen - EMOTION, and both incredible 2020 albums from Taylor Swift (which I hadn't heard until this month).
So happy you are back, but I think you and all the UA-cam critics are wrong on this one. Her next album will hone in on some of these varied sounds, and just because it isn’t cohesive for me doesn’t mean that the songs aren’t good. We’re in the playlist generation, I get this so an album review, but if Lana wanted to do a trap interlude then she did a bloody good trap interlude.
I'll be honest: I didn't even notice there was a new Lana album until a day or two ago. It really flew under the radar for me, but I actually enjoy just listening to you talking about the album. Completely unrelated to this video, the deluxe of Screen Violence by CHVRCHES came out last night, and I think it's excellent.
I don’t care about Lana Del Ray but I care about the channel so I’m here to like and comment so you can make a full recovery mark. Thanks Mark for bouncing back so fast considering how disheartening the whole situation was for you.
The fact you can't critique an artist without comparing her to other singers... Lana Del Rey's lyrics have way more personality than Adele! Adele is the safest thing on the world, but Lana has the most impact, albeit how subtle! When you listen to singers nowadays which singing style are you hearing, Lana's breathy, whispery vocals or Adele's power belting? Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Selena Gomez, Olivio Rodrigo, and many up and coming contemporary artists of this generation have been adopting the breathy, whispery, subdued vocal style over the outdated loud X-Factor belting. And guess what, all those singers have cited Lana Del Rey as an influence and inspiration. So take your ungrateful ass elsewhere and stop undermining Lana's impact. Those artists you mentioned can't touch the spot where Lana changed pop music.
Funny, just because someone is influential doesn't make her the best at it, nor should we ignore all the 60s/70s singers in which Lana was influenced...
Welcome back, Mark. I hope that hack won't happen to you again. Fuck whoever hacked you and anyone doing crypto in general. Album I thought was better than COCC and generally pretty alright, with some low points and inconsistent tho. I'll probably give it a 6.
Well... I'm certainly surprised with where you landed with this, but for very different reasons than you're probably thinking. I expected this review to be caked in backhanded compliments, uncharitable comparisons to contemporaries and weird abstractions about gender politics. What I didn't expect was for the final tally to be indicative of a milquetoast fence-straddling takeaway when the strongly-worded sentiments in this video were anything BUT. Evidently, there were only a few songs which you actually enjoyed, you didn't like the production, you didn't like the vocal delivery and you weren't really all that excited about the collaborators on the record. Hell, in the beginning of the video, the album's title was expressed with the most disdain and disinterest that I've EVER heard from a reviewer, and so the five is puzzling to me. I'm surprised you didn't give Banisters a score that was more consistent with how you felt with the project as a whole. This is kinda unrelated, but another issue is that you bothered to dedicate a full length review to this thing when time and again you've given Lana's albums a lukewarm reception AT BEST. It feels exploitative and something that was strictly done for the clicks, especially when taken into the broader context of how you've historically held your nose throughout every project.
Straight white cis men should just keep their opinions on female music to themselves. If it doesn’t sound like Taylor Swift or Billie Eilish they can’t form a coherent thought. Also you weren’t “right” about Lana, you are a typical man critic who hasn’t tried to understand Lana’s take on anything in 10 years.
As if I'm straight XD Irregardless, I've been forming pretty coherent opinions on art for the past decade and a thousand plus reviews - shame you didn't really bother to engage with any of it, which seems to read way more on you attempting to dismiss someone on the basis of gender or sexuality. ;)
We stan Spectrum Pulse, good luck with getting your channel back on its feet. I'll be supporting all the way.

Just coming to support this great content creator, gonna check this out again once I get a chance with the album.
Lana doesn’t want promotion. Lana doesn’t need Jack antanoff. Lana does what she wants.
I’m so glad the channel is back and hopefully nothing like this happens again.
Happy to have you back!
Glad you’re back!
I am happy that videos are able to go back up on the channel
Living legend, wildflower wildfire, thunder, dealer, Arcadia, text book are all amazing songs.
I'm glad your channel is saved. I got so worried...
Great to have you back Mark! Keep doing a great job on the reviews!

Ugh why can’t more Lana fans comment this way. So respectful & well-spoken.
The Taylor and Billie Eilish comparisons probably have to do with writing personal, relatable lyrics from a woman’s perspective.

Welcome back!
Mark, have you had a chance to listen to "The Marfa Tapes"?
actually comparing Lana to Taylor Swift and billy eyelash? I hard disagree. I love Arcadia and Dealer, and im a metal/country guy.
Welcome back Mark.

That's generally what in-depth reviews are
I hate this reviewer, but he's right about a lot of things here. One of Lana's worst records, if not the worst.
