  • A wonderful evening of music and great food provided by the Garrison House (clarinda.org/m...) in Clarinda, was enjoyed at the Glenn Miller Museum in Clarinda, Iowa. Entertainment was first provided by pianist Jacob Dupre. After the dinner, Nick Hilscher joined Jacob and put on a great performance with music from the American Songbook. His awesome voice, backed by the fabulous piano playing of Jacob Dupre, provided first-rate entertainment for all of those in attendance at the dinner.
Now in its 46th year, the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society sponsors a music scholarship program. With support from the scholarship program donors and GMBS, as well as the Ed Polic family, GMBS awards a total of $12,000 per year to high school seniors and college freshmen who intend to make music part of their future.
Applications from all over the U.S. are received and judged by music professionals, and ten vocal semi-finalists and ten instrumental semi-finalists are chosen. The twenty students travel to Clarinda, at their own expense, to compete in the Scholarship competition, which is held on Thursday of the yearly Glenn Miller Festival. The winners from the competition, three vocal and three instrumental students, perform on Friday at the Stage Show, followed by the GMBS Big Band.
As you can imagine, the scholarship competition is a huge undertaking. This event, along with the yearly Glenn Miller Festival, would not be possible without the help and support of our donors and volunteers. Volunteers help with travel arrangements, homestay the semi-finalists, make sure they get to and from the competition, feed them, and support them in any way necessary.
Previous winners of these competitions have one theme that is constant; they are very grateful to all of the volunteers for their overwhelming generosity. GMBS is also very grateful to all of our volunteers who make this program possible.
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Music Scholarship Program, which allows us to continue helping students with their education costs. - - -Shari Greenwood, Executive Director Glenn Miller Birthplace Museum: www.glennmille...
