It's finally here. Sandy Bridge has arrived on a truly enthusiast platform with support for 64GB of memory, PCIe generation 3, SATA3 6.0Gb/s and more performance than you can shake a stick at!
Now find out how to get even more performance out of your 3960X or 3930K!
Damn, Linus is so young here! The good old days NCIX Tech Tips!
@keiki646 Temps were not going up after 3 hours. They were stable at about 5 minutes.
As for whether 3 hours is enough, it's absolutely not enough for a production system, but on the other hand, ~80% of the time a system passes for 3 hours, it will pass for 300 in my experience.
Thanks for your videos Linus. They are always so interesting and so informative.
and the best part is when you make mistakes you don't even care and you just move on after correcting yourself. DON'T EVER STOP MAKING VIDEOS!
love the combination of blue, black and silver on the video card, ram, motherboard and cooler it looks awsome. with the right case it would be the blue machine as the red and green u had build in the past
@madsmadser Thanks for the comfort words. Now I feel much better. I'm building my very first all-around-PC. And by your possitive explanation now I can go ahead and build it with a clear mind. Thanx again friend. :)
NOW VERY GOOD EDITING!!! congratulations!
love the face you make everytime you say "a little bit overkill"
a true classic
im an amd user yet i always watch most of your intel related videos =D
Nice guide! i got this motherboard, simple overclocking
I was talking about Sandy Bridge only. Generally, the bigger the manufacturing process the more volts are needed to achieve a certain clock. Sandy takes more volts than Ivy etc.
Im building a new computer but never OC'ed my cpu before. I was going to get the k version and try to clock it up to 3.6 or 4.0 depending on how hot it gets. It seemed easy until he started with the voltage, how do i know how much to set up the voltage as I go? and testing it stability?Does that mean stressing it until your computer just crashes?
Will this work for all motherboards because I bought this cpu with an Intel Extreme Series Motherboard and I don't think it has an OC setting.
you can find one in any modding online shop, they're called open air or bench table
try to look for dismatech
I love how that's the main thing you got from this video.
How do you know what the limits are in terms of over clocking a machine? Does the manufacturer like intel provide information or doe the water cooling components come with information that can be used as guide lines?
@13loodLust Future proof doesn't mean a new platform won't come out to replace it. It means the machine will still be capable in the future. You can probably drop a Q9650 in your motherboard and still be set for a good while with a platform that you bought years ago, that is the point of futureproofing.
I use the Asus Rampage IV Extreme and many people have complained about the vrms heating up, but I put my H100 in the top and have the fans pulling in fresh cool air and my vrms at idle are 30-31c and during hours of gaming only hit 41c max so if your case allows for it then have the top fans blowing down because it makes a huge difference.
The Corsair Obsidian 900d is going to launch soon. Wait for a month or so and go for that. It isn't flashy outer space gimmicky stuff but it's huge and great for watercooling
Hey there - thanks heaps for the video. Will try this out in the weekend on my ASUS P9X79 + 3960x machine. At what temperature should I pull the plug if things go wrong? What is going to do damage?
@aingaran2003 Yes it will!
Is Vdroop the same thing as Load line calibration?..
@chrissep are you using his EXACT bench? especially the motherboard
My 950 has been pwnt.
BRAVO!
@Nitro5512x It's true. P67 motherboards are only compatible with lga1155 Cpus such as the i5 2500k or i7 2600k.
@NCIXcom Is the Ivy bridge equivilent to the i7 extreme CPUs going to use the LGA 2011 or the LGA 1155?
I'm thinking about OC'ing, If you up the ratio & haven't upped the voltage enough what happens when they say "unstable" it blue screens & then what? Can you just restart & go into bios again easily?
Hi, Just wondering what you do with your spare products or the ones you don't use?
Ahhhh...The olden days.
Yes, these settings should work. Just try them, and see if its stable.
What Ghz would you recommend that I can go to without having to raise voltages ?
Linus, I noticed the MHz and Load readings on the Real Temp are both reading 0.00. I'm confused by that when I run Prime95 the load is always 100% and the Mhz reflects the OC. Please explain.
TANKS
Hey NCIX, I need your experience in this please ..
I am building a new Workstation with 3930K I want to overclock it but I'm using the Thermaltake FrioOCK CPU cooler , is it good or should i go for Water Cooling? if yes what do you suggest?
I would like to know how you made that bare computer case/stand thing
@Ncixcom will a 1000w psu be capable of powering a 3960x and 3x 6970s? Please respond
Linus or ncix could you respawn to this on the bench marks would you be adding skyrim and if you have any suggestins on getting the best card that can run all max settings i would like to go with nvida so would i need a 500 series card? like a 580 or 570?
i have a corsair 620w.. will it support lga 2011, 16gig mem, 570gtx, 2 ssd drives and a 2tb seagate green?
Is it better to get Sandy Bridge-E now, or get a cheap processor and wait for Ivy Bridge?
@envyus83 Wait.. I have an x58. it'll work right? My computer doesn't say anything on dxdiag and the manual does not say anything nor the website. But I read online that it is probably an x58, so will it work?
I can still use 3 dimms for 3 channel memory on a 2011 platform right ?
Whenever i have speedstep enabled my psu (ThermalTake Tough Power XT 875w) coil whines like hell when it throttles up to 4.4Ghz. Would it be better to just run a straight up 4.4Ghz OC and deal with the higher idle temps. Note im using a 3930K with a Noctua NH-D14.
then is it equivalent to like an old pentium 3 running at 18.4 ghz. So the overall performance of the 4 cores are 18.4 ghz? thanks
what kind of power supply should i get if i want to crossfire two graphics cards?
why dont he use a rampage iv 2011 or any other 2011 socket brand is this one the best or is there another brand name that tops this or which do u all viewers recomend which brand/type is better suited for socket 2011 and is ivy bridge going to be better or worse?
I have only just bought myself a ud7 with a 2600k on it, as a gamer (no workstation or servers for me) is it worth looking at this chip? is it that much better?
What monitor are you using in this video?
I need help deciding between msi 7950 or msi 660ti plz help
Only 3 hours of Prime95? My computer BSOD at the 4th hour. I usually let prime95 run at least 6 hours to be safe but nothing really stresses the CPU as much as Prime95
2011 pins, very up to date. :D
Tell Me what you think about my GTX 550 TI in my Hp p7 1037cb upgrade.
thank you
True! I had to retire my Intel C2Q Q9650 (12MB L2 Cache) @ 3.5 Ghz, because I was bottlenecking my 2 GTX 460s in sli with games like Battlefield 3 and Crysis 2. I replaced it with an Intel i5-2500K and even at stock speeds the bottleneck went away. My FPS increased by about 25% in gaming.
I agree that for a one time benchmark run, more extreme volts are allowed. Still, I know that i'm not going to push my stuff beyond 1.4v/24/7. It's still easy to pertain speeds of up 4.7-8 GHz, and i'm content in the knowledge that my chip should last a long time!
If your running at 1.55v for 24/7 use? Will you kill the cpu even if your temps are within 40-50 degrees on average?
no
Is cooling be better with push-pull config??
@avispa987 Slick's technical knowledge is outstanding, but his camera/video editing skillz need some work.
He's smart and hard-working and I'm sure after a little while he'll be fully up to speed and making the Cameraman (who is still a legend in my books) look bad!
Yeah, nice boards!
by the way linus, when i run prime 95 on my 8120 at 4.6ghz i only get 70-75% usage in windows 8. any reason why?
true, but my point is that every chip is different. where one may need 1.5v to get to a certain clock under decent temps, another under the same settings may cook itself. Heavy OCing is a gamble.
i have alienware aurora r4 with i7 3960x and dual nvidia 690 gtx and ram 8gb..AFaTClan, is that my system is ok or unstable? plzz help me..
Does anyone know if you can buy those liquid coolers separately?
@ChrisMHutchins what cards do you plan on using?
will the ivy bridge be coming to the 2011?
Linus, would the 3960X fit in a Giggabyte G1 Assassen board?
@MrOwlgoesw00t I can't put a 3960x in my x58?
@demaciu88 I don't know if your familiar with the lithography of the processors. The conroe series were all 65nm in thickness, this therefore allowed them to be able to withstand a lot higher voltages by being able to disperse heat more effectively.When we start comparing this to a Sandy bridge E processor your argument is ruled as invalid because of the fact that Sand bridge E processors are 32nm in thickness making them less capable of sustaining such high voltages without any degradation.
please do an overclocking tutorial for the i7 3820
Hi, I have a question. My brother says it is 4.6ghz per core but I say it is for the whole CPU. Who is correct? Thanks
I have a Intel P67 Micro ATX, can I put a 3960x in it?
@skaterguy1423
hey man,
i have a 2600k and should i up the BLCK as well?
@OTAKUJHE Very few programs today uses more than 4 cores, so only professional video editors or anyone who need a lot of threads would benefit much from this. The 3960X have also replaced the 990X and its price of about 1000 USD, so it is clearly intended for the most extreme users. Though the 3930K (100Mhz, and 3MB Cache less) costs about half of the 3960X, and will probably be preferred by enthusiasts. But 2600K is still a good buy, and I might build a system with it myself after Christmas.
is a 850 watts power supply enough to oc a i5-2500k and radeon 6950 crossfire
Hi I would like a guide that explains all those terms in the bios. Have a ud3 x79 of gigabyte. Can't get above 4400 with 1,43 voltage and watercooling. I've seen people get to that with much lover voltages but Io dunno what else tu adjust. Thanks for the vid anyway
@MrOwlgoesw00t what motherboard will I need?
anyone know the best software to overclock cpus? i cant do it from my bios and im curious as to the technical tid bits. also i have a i7 2600 and im not so sure its the best for overclocking. anyone have any advise?
Im making a new computer and i want to know if it can handle any overclock like ram processor and vid card. Specs are i7 3960x liquid cooled dual nvidia 690x liquid cooled and 16 gb of ram. Motherboard is asus rampage .
48 hrs at 90 degrees ? Celsius or Fahrenheit ?
can anybody tell me settings for 4.0 I got the same board and 3930
guys a question please i have to buy a cpu so what is better the i7 Extreme 3960X or i7 990X Extreme Edition
ps i need for play! thanks
@StraightShooter01 It could also be great for benchmarkers, but yes, this is truly "overkill" for gamers.
I'm looking to build a gaming machine based on a MAXIMUS V FORMULA or MAXIMUS V FORMULA game mother board and i7 CPU. I'm unsure about graphics card or Solid state H/DD
At moment I'm looking for futuristic looking PC cases but also want to water cool the CPU.
Any ideas on cases or how these systems are setup inside cases?
Uhhh, Happy 10th Birthday to the 3930k, the original 3960x and the x79 platform. I'm still using my RIVE board that I bought in early 2012 but I upgraded to the Xeon E5-1680 v2 a few years ago.
haii
cm gx750watt enough for this system????
An absolute monster CPU
@chrissep i thought he said "how to get the most" out of your new intel hardware ??
im on a q9450 and ive been running 3.85ghz@1.56v for the past year and a half and no problems
I hope all this info is true..coz i am seriously impressed ..lol, how did u find out the optimized voltage to overclock to that amount ?
@ChiefLongpole thank you man
@KC90MC3 thanks man so much!!
Intel rocks!
I have a 30 dollar CPU cooler (CM hyper 212) and my 2500k didnt go over 58c running prime 95 overnight at 4.2ghz. Why did he bump the voltage so high? I didnt even TOUCH my voltages for my 4.2ghz overclock.
will it blend?
Thats a cool case.
Really I wanted something like the Asus Predator case, but I think I'll end up going with one of the cool master cases, like the nvidea combo case.
I thought India was like an IT hub -full of IT Tech- at the moment?
@DBRMatrix 5ghz is still requires some voltages to hit.
why is linus running at 1.55 volts for 4.6? I was able to get 4.7ghz with 1.4v under 65 under 7 hours of prime
will LGA2011 support 64gb or ram?
Why are the 2011 CPUs bigger than 1366 and 1155 even though the die size should be smaller?
Your system stable at those settings?
I picked up a Rampage IV Extreme, 3960x, and 64GB RAM, and I couldn't afford a GPU either.
I ended up grabbing a used 670 for a temporary GPU. In December I'm going to drop about $500-$600 into liquid cooling with a Corsair 800D, and summer next year I'm going to grab the best most expensive card.
And now?
@mryankeesnation
But can it run Tetris?
Can anyone tell me if these Settings work with 3930k too becuase linus hasnt put up a 3930k Overcloking guide please someone help me im trying to achieve 4.6 Ghz overclock on 3930k i have h100i cooler igf you are asking
What a nice 8 core 3960x. I prefer the 24 core model though
