  • Turns out the extension wing on my sawstop contractor saw wasn't even close to flat and straight, causing the cross cut sled to bind in use.

    I've got the SS Contractor model also. I see you upgraded to the 52-inch Professional Fence, me too! I was skeptical if I really need the 52-Inch Fence at first, but I am very happy with it after using it for several months now!
    I am in the process of improving the Dust Collection on the saw now by enclosing the Legs and adding an Extension Table with the Motor also enclosed. I bought my SS used and extremely glad I did. Great Decision!!

    I purchased the cast iron wings when I ordered my SS. You are definitely correct in the term "wonky" regarding the stock wings. Mine made great shelving in my shop.

    It is disappointing when you put good money on something and the quality is there, but they cheap out on parts.
    Nice solution though! Thanks for sharing!

    Did something similar with my way older and much lesser Craftsman several years ago, but placed a router plate with mounted router, in the center, a 3/4 parallel slot to the right, and ended up with a bonus router table. As I recall my efforts, you are probably 80% there. The Craftsman holes weren't threaded so no problem acquiring nuts, bolts and washers though. Nice idea, I think it looks way more attractive than the stock table.

      +Darnley Bynoe If you check out episode #87, I've since upgraded my saw to the 36" T-Glide fence, and then added a router table.

      Cool, guess I didn't check the publish date, this one just popped up in my suggestions. Thx

    Nice! I ordered the cast iron extensions (2) when I bought my SS 52" Contractor Saw. The stamped metal extensions that came standard with the saw made very nice shelves in my shop. The extension table that comes w/ the SS is wonky/cheap also. Gonna build a torsion box extension to replace it. Thanks!

      +RHI Hodag I've since upgraded to the cast iron & extension table myself, what on the extension table did you find wonky, out of interest? I stuck a router table in mine ua-cam.com/video/Bza7k0eLG5U/v-deo.html

    Nice one Paul. Looking forward to the shop tour mate. Can't wait to hear about the floors paint job. Have been thinking about doing it myself.

      Glen H Thanks. The paint job falls into the 'why didn't I do this sooner' category - adds so much extra light, and cleaning up is so easy!

      Paul Jenkins Why easier to clean up? … Hoping you talk a bit about the floor in shop tour!

      Glen H The concrete is no longer porous as its filled with the polyurethane paint. When sweeping, it means the sawdust isn't pushed into little crevices, as well as not taking very fine amounts of concrete dust up.

    Having just assembled a Sawstop contractors saw I'd agree with your assessment of the pressed steel extension wings being garbage. They're not even close to good enough considering the price of the saw. Additionally the wooden extension table was warped out of the box, no even close to flat and led me on a merry dance trying to get it level before I realised. I'm happy with the saw itself but the package is let down by some very average components.

    I always wondered if the embossed logo was a good idea when I saw it on peoples YT vids; at least it seems like it was an easy fix for you.

    • @TheWoodKnight
      @TheWoodKnight  9 років тому

      Mario Cappellano I think the idea is OK at best, but thin sheet metal like that just doesn't take the embossing process very well. I think the very act of embossing it is what made it flex. If it was 'carved' out (mill/laser/whatever) I think it'd be OK but probably not much cheaper to make it than a full cast iron wing then

    I could not help but to notice that your table saw is a "saw stop" model, After all the good reports about this saw it surprised me to see that the side wing had warped. I always considered this to be the top of the range of table saws but the wing warping does not bode well.

      This is the contractor model - until recently this was the lowest end model, and with all the budget trim rather than upgrading. Its disappointing, but apparently basically a non issue with any of their other models that are all cast iron

    Great video, thanks for the info. Have you had any other issues with the contractors Sawstop. I'm considering buying this table saw. Thanks for the info

    Hi Paul,
    What made you buy the contractor ss over the jobsite saw? I'm a enthusiast hobbyists not sure which to buy. I value your advice

    • @TheWoodKnight
      @TheWoodKnight  7 років тому

      Jobsite saw wasn't available when I bought it (or even when I made this video), plus jobsite saws have considerably less power, stability, and work capacity for the trade off of being smaller and lighter.

    Did the fence come with the saw? I'm looking to upgrade my Ozito Table Saw, just upgraded my fence using Stan Sullivan's design, but it still isn't finding perfect square, am eventually planning on upgrading the whole cabinet to a much more solid one, but the fence being true is becoming a major concern for me. Cheers

    • @TheWoodKnight
      @TheWoodKnight  9 років тому

      It does, yes. There are two fences on the contractor saw to choose from - the stock one that I have, and the "T-Glide" fence which is better and pricier. The TGlide is modelled after the Biesemeyer fence, has much longer rails and I believe they're single part rails instead of split.
      If you're just after a fence, you might want to consider something like the "Heavy Duty Tablesaw Fence" from Carbatec - its much cheaper than the fence from Sawstop (AU) and what I'll be upgrading to eventually. It contains the fence and the two rails that it rides on. A few retailers have very similar (I'd hazard a guess they're the same) aftermarket fences.

      Paul Jenkins Thanks for that, really appreciate the response, am very new to all of this, didn't even do woodwork at HS!!!, but enjoying building things, nice to find another Aussie on here!!!

    mate, thank you for the video, I am thinking of buying this saw, the issue I have is that the reviews on UA-cam seem all payed or sponsored by Sawstop. you mentioned a few issues? what were the other ones? also wonder if the great price difference between this one and the cabinet one is worth it. thank you

    • @TheWoodKnight
      @TheWoodKnight  7 років тому +1

      AFAIK, unless its specifically a paid product tour rather than review, all of the 'sponsored' sawstop saws in UA-camrs hands are "just show the saw" rather than "make sure you always say its good".
      If you can afford the cabinet saw, get the cabinet saw. It's heavier, it has better dust collection, and can come with a better motor (3hp). I could not, so I did not.

      Adrian Radu I just bought a saw stop cabinet saw to replace a delta contractor saw with a unifence that is pushing 20 years old. It isn't that much better. the fence really can't compare to the versatility of the unifence, the dust collection isn't stellar and the table alignment was miles put when I got it (they have designed a great system for fixing this although it seems like a way to make a less than accurate saw and let the user fix it) if you can test drive other saws I would recommend it

    • @mariusradu55

      Thank you Mark, I ended up buying the Sawstop Contractor saw with 36" T-Glide fence and cast iron wings, and integrated mobile base. I am really happy with my purchase, I find the fence to be great. The blade and the fence were perfectly square out of the box, instructions and packaging were a joy. I have no experience with the Unifence

  • @mariusradu55

    I see this fence here and the T-Glide (I think) in another video? Did you upgrade? Is it worth it? I am trying to decide which fence to go with. Carbatec is my only option here in Perth..

      +Adrian Radu yes, upgraded. Get the tglide, it's much better. More rigid, stays squarer
