Hi Mark, I’m confused now? How does reducing watering cause limping of the leaves? I thought it would be the other way around….I wonder what the mechanism is to cause that?

😄 If a plant is not watered for very long it will convert energy from the leaves to produce more roots, because it will try to make more roots to look for water in the soil. But if you water it and it has plenty of roots under it then it will absorb more water and will give it thicker leaves. So if a plant is being watered less frequently, then it will have less leaves but it will be thicker.
A plant that is watered often will not need plenty of roots so it will have more leaves but they will be thinner (aka not stressed). This is what happens with Benguet growers as their plants grow big due to mild temperatures but their leaves are not very thick. Since they are not thick, they also dry out very quickly if the plant suddenly gets less water. So making a not stressed plant become stressed/thick takes some time and will really sacrifice a number of leaves. 😄 Hope it helps...

Succulents store water for them to survive. The simple mechanism here is that if you water more often the plant will produce bigger leaves for them to get more sunlight for evaporation, hence if you water less, the plant will produce smaller leaves/compact form to save/conserve the water longer.

The leaves that are firm are full of water. When the plant uses the water stored in a leaf that leaf will get softer and limp because its "empty" of water. When the leaves are getting limp, wrinkled, or soft, the plant needs to be watered.
