Mark Hamill is the ultimate Joker , animated movies, shows, video games... he voiced him for almost 30 years now. Whenever i read a comic with the Joker in it i imagine Mark's voice
@@nickreacts6394 you need to see more of his Joker . His best performance i personally think is in the Arkham games ( best Joker design outside the comics as well)
Seems like you haven't watched Batman: The Animated Series, probably the best cartoon ever made, and the best portrayal of Batman out there. This film is a part of that, and Mark Hamill is the Joker throughout with Kevin Conroy as Batman. They also voiced the Arkham games because the creators of the games saw them as the most iconic voices for those characters for a reason.
Saw this movie in its short theatrical release when it premiered in the 90s. Awesome on the big screen. You should react to Batman TAS or at least the Justice League three Part opener “Secret Origins”.
If you really want some.of your questions answered there's a comic book line that covers alot of your questions and she's such a good bad guy. They are worth looking up and reading. This is still my favorite batman ever love the actors and everything about this.
Now ain't that a coinky-dink. We're talking about the old man and the spawn of his loins just so happens to call. It makes you want to laugh. *Doesn't it, Arty.*
fun fact: the lyrics sung at the opening aren't latin. the late great shirley walker, the lead composer for BTAS, knew that some of the people who worked on the music for the film wouldn't get credited for it. so she had the singers for the theme sing the names of those people but backwards.
So long as you're willing to watch films from the DCAU completely blind, might I recommend Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. It takes in the same shared universe as this movie, Batman the Animated series, Superman the Animated Series etcetera, but takes place 50 years in the future. It's arguably one of the greatest Batman movies ever made, making it into the top 5 of most top 10 lists, just prepare yourself to be disturbed.
Oh yeah! Mark Hamill is definitely my favorite Joker hands down, the Laugh, the constant switching between Mid-Atlantic to New Yorker accents.. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are probably the best Batman and Joker pairing ever..
This movie is legitimately one of the best Batman movies ever made, in my opinion. I love that it's a legitimately good mystery, on top of everything else. The artwork, the music, the romance, the voice acting, everything about it is phenomenal.
I’m so glad you were you able to watch Batman Mask of the Phantasm, the best Batman film ever. I was lucky to catch it in theatres when it first came out but that was due to hard investigation and hunting this film down as it was criminally not advertised well. Many discount Mask of the Phantasm for being animated but its visuals and story truly capture and understand who Batman is in a way the live-action movies often fail to. It shows Batman as more than an action hero but a detective, a crimefighter, and a human being. The chemistry he had with Andrea was heartfelt and believable. The scene with Bruce at the Wayne tombstone begging his parents for release from his promise had me in tears. When it came to the action, the violence was beautiful and intense and for this film Batman even kept his code versus killing. In reference to your question about the soundtrack, the opening track isn’t Latin but the names of the film’s creators sung backwards, it’s that clever.
Wow, I can imagine how awesome this must have been to catch in the theaters! And I completely agree with your analysis for why this is such a great Batman story. Singing the creators name backwards is clever, although I think that actually might qualify as pig latin... ;)
The first time I saw this was on Cartoon Network in 2002 and I was thrilled by how amazing this movie was! And YES, Mark Hamill is the voice of the Joker which makes me more happier.
I was so impressed with this movie, and I loved Mark Hamill even though I didn't think it was him for some reason. And now I'm really intrigued about the Batman animated series if it's the inspiration for this!
One thing I don't see other commenters addressing: this movie is not a direct adaptation of any comics storyline. It does borrow a couple of elements from Year One (Bruce's first night out as a vigilante showing how he needs to strike fear into his enemies immediately) and Year Two (Phantasm's resemblence to the Reaper), but it's pretty much its own thing. I believe Andrea/Phantasm were later incorporated into the comics. It's interesting to see how the Batman mythos grows. Year after year, tons of stories are written, and tons are ultimately forgotten, but a few stories from every generation continue to be read, referred to, and talked about, and ultimately become parts of what I call "the legend" -- that set of famous stories that any "biographer" of Bruce Wayne's life would be likely to incorporate.
I don't think I've ever heard anyone else mention the significance of the scene so I really appreciate you saying that possibly your favorite is Bruce begging his parents to release him from his promise. I didn't quite think of it as feeling guilty for being happy and you've really given me something to think about as I think I've essentially done the same. Spot on review. I will definitely check out more of your reactions. "I didn't see this coming. I didn't count on being happy."
You should definitely watch Batman: The Animated Series (of which this film is a feature-length episode). It is one of the best adaptations of the Batman mythos and, for many (myself included), THE definitive one.
@@nickreacts6394 The only difference is that with a PG rating they were able to go slightly more graphic in this film than the show, but the show has the same great writing, animation, and performances.
@@nickreacts6394 Batman: The Animated Series was also the first appearance of Harley Quinn, they invented her character for an episode and she was a huge hit!
@@nickreacts6394 It is actually responsible for many of the modern interpretations of villains (and at least two original characters) in the comics. Extremely well produced and voice acted. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are THE definitive voices of Batman and the Joker for a lot of people. And from a reaction perspective: there's four seasons as well as three seasons of a Superman series set in the same world, three seasons of a (brilliant) cyberpunk series set 50 years later "Batman Beyond" and five seasons of a Justice League series with Bats as a main character.
There's a comic sequel to this movie that explains what happened to Joker & Andrea. Andrea took Joker to a nearby sewer grate to kill him, but the explosions knocked the clown out of her grasp, and he dove into the sewer water and escaped (explaining why we see him in future episodes) Also, Fun Fact: The man who voiced the Phantasm also voiced Andrea's father, showing she wants the last voice her victims hear is of the man they murded. It's also a curveball/red herring the writers/directors through to make you think it's him
I could not believe that I didn't figure out that Andrea was the Phantasm when I first saw this movie at age 11. When she saw Batman at the cemetary and immediately figured out he was Bruce Wayne just from noticing the Wayne tombstone, the movie had already told us who the Phantasm was long before she took her mask off. First clue was when Phantasm refused to fight Batman and second clue was when Andrea miraculously arrived in time to save Batman from the police. The movie did a great job throwing that curveball.
Also, Andrea didn't kill the Joker because he's no longer the man who killed her father. Thus, she didn't even bother trying to come after him again, since I guess she sees him as Batman's problem.
In my mind this is the perfect Batman movie. It gives you a complete 360 of his character, showing how he got started, how he has ended. What happiness, grief, loss, heartbreaks and all that does to him. You see what he is capable of and what he is willing to do. But even more important what he is not willing to do. The fake outs with the twists are so smart and calculated, its amazing. In general the story covers everything from past to future perfectly and within very short time. Just perfect pacing really. It has what is imo the best Joker and best Batman and Bruce. It has the best story for Batman not just to flesh his character out but also in terms of mystery. Its personal but its also a legitimately good mystery. It has the highest highs a Batman film has ever had imo, like Batmans identity almost being revealed and all that. And it also has imo the best visuals any Batman film has had aside from The Batman which has definitely topped it. But this movie perfectly sells the gothic nature of Batman, and the gothic noir style of the comics. The original comics also came out in the noir movie period so it makes perfect sense to recreate that. Its just amazing. 10/10 no doubt in my mind, best Batman movie. Yes Dark Knight is great but this is just so much more imo.
I'm actually kinda surprised someone doesn't know that Mark Hamill voiced the Joker. He is like, THE Joker. It's his most iconic role next to being Luke Skywalker. Every voice actor that has gotten the Joker role will always be compared to Hamill, for better or worse. If you want to get into the DCAU, then here's a pretty good order (they're sorted in release order): 1. Batman: The Animated Series Season 1 2. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm 3. Batman: The Animated Series Season 2 4. Batman/Mr. Freeze: Sub Zero 5. Superman: The Animated Series Season 1 6. Superman: The Animated Series Season 2 7. The New Batman Adventures 8. Superman: The Animated Series Season 3 9. Batman Beyond Season 1 10. Batman Beyond Season 2 11. Batman Beyond Season 3 12. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker 13. Justice League Season 1 14. Justice League Season 2 15. Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman 16. Justice League Unlimited Season 1 17. Justice League Unlimited Season 2 18. Justice League Unlimited Season 3 19. Batman & Harley Quinn 20. Justice League vs The Fatal Five One of the most interesting about the DCAU is the gradual escalation. As you see in Mask of the Phantasm, Batman is still inexperienced, he messes up from time to time. Even street thugs can get lucky and beat him. But by the time of the Justice League series, Batman is the de facto leader of the Justice League. He's the one that godly beings like Superman, Flash, and Wonder Woman listen to. Watching the DCAU in release order is so cathartic because you see the progression of the characters. The same Batman that once struggled in stopping a robbery will years later, stare a god like Darkseid in the eye and not flinch.
There were three main shows I just had to watch every day after school; TinyToons, Animaniacs, and Batman Animated Series. This Batman universe, and the Tim Burton universe are my favorite versions of the Batman franchise. And it took me a long time to learn that Mark Hamill was part of this, but when I did (I was a Star Wars kid) it blew my mind. I wholeheartedly agree with everyone that you need to tackle this series, not many reactions on YT. One channel I watched started season one, but stopped because they weren't getting a lot of online traffic. And I leave with this, just imagine Mark Hamill walking around his house or driving around, practicing his Joker laugh. That's such an amusing thought
This movie was basically a full-length movie attached to _Batman: The Animated Series_ that ran in the early 90's and spawn the entirety of the DC Animated Universe (which included _Superman: The Animated Series_ , _Justice League_ , _Batman Beyond_ , _Static Shock_ , and a few other shows). The show was also the main inspiration for the _Batman: Arkham_ video game franchise. Kevin Conroy (Batman) & Mark Hamil (The Joker) ultimately have cemented themselves as the most prolific and identifiable voices of their characters due to a now three-decade long run as the two characters. Such a fantastic thing to witness.
Batman: The Animated Series and this movie were drawn on black sheets of paper. It really helps give the show an iconic, unique look and helps make those amazing moments like the graveyard scene so striking.
Mark Hamill is The Joker. Kevin Conroy is The Batman. They are the voices many of us think of when we imagine the characters. They have both played those respective roles far longer than anyone else has; over 30 years.
I grew up in the era of _Batman: The Animated Series_ and was lucky enough to catch this movie during its VERY limited theatrical release. If you thought it was good like this, imagine seeing it in a theater! The shot of Joker laughing in the flames with the swell of choral music still gives me chills; it's just _masterful._ I'm an illustrator for a living and _BTAS_ was a major influence on my drawing style along with the Disney Renaissance movies and _Anastasia._ I got the fancy boxed DVD set of the entirety of _BTAS_ the Christmas before my final semester of art school, and for a large portion of the time I was working on my illustration thesis I had that set playing on the TV next to my desk. To say that series - and this movie - are pillars of my upbringing is an understatement.
Now this…. Is my all time favorite Batman movie. I’m so glad you did this!! Not many people even talk about this one for some reason… let alone react to it! You’re awesome ☺️
This is why DCAU version of Batman has such great impact because his origin is so strong in this movie. The line that Bruce says to his parents at cemetery "That i didn't count on being happy" hits me every time soo hard when I hear it. That line basically defined Bruce Wayne/Batman as whole.
This is my 3rd fav cbm ever. Bruce Timm and Paul Dini made Bruce so human and using the theme of love in the batman mythos is sometimes a hit or miss but this one is the best concept of love in the comic book movies.
I love this movie. It's one of best Batman movies in general. Batman is very well Batman here and we see him both fighting crime but also being the greatest detective he is hailed as too. And the difference between him and Andrea...with her falling off the deep and and killing people, and seeking the most violent revange while Batman stands for justice and has compassion for his opponents. I mean this movie and Batman are from TV series. Batman: The Animated series and his compassion is shown there again and again. With many of the episodic villains, Batman shows a lot of compassion and understanding for their motives and pain that drove them to it. Like the Baby Doll episode and Ace, and Harley and Two-Face....
Phantasm and Andrea were invented for this movie. So I don't think anyone saw Andrea as Phantasm coming. The way they made it seem like it was the father was clever red herring (heck Phantasm and her father were both voiced by Stacey Keach).
The Batman animated series is one of the most iconic modern pieces of Batman media because it actually came up with some great additions to the Batman mythos. Mr. Freeze is the character that he is today because of how the show reinvented him. Harley Quinn also didn’t exist until the show created her. To my knowledge, The Phantasm was also an original character. Not to mention introducing the best Batman and Joker voices of all time.
I can certainly understand this choice, I was so impressed! And I really want to see Batman Beyond, although I think I'll likely check out the Animated Series first (as I've been advised that will help the viewing experience)
andrea is original to this film but the phantasm design is based on the reaper from the year two comics. (at least that what most people think) even batman being framed is from year two.
@@nickreacts6394 also in year two Batman used a gun. so i'm glad they took inspiration from the comics instead of committing fully to an adaptation of year two.
Batman the Animated Series is an amazing show and if you haven't seen it, you need to. It's more or less based on the Tim Burton version of characters, but also does its own thing in many ways, and even goes into comic book territory a lot. And yes, that IS Mark Hamill as the Joker, one of, if not THE greatest Joker of all time. And Kevin Conroy is an all-time great Batman.
All of DC Animations are the best!! far beyond anything. Killing joke, Hush, Redhood, and even Flashpoint are all my favs that come to mind. And they are only the tip of the iceberg
@@ItApproaches xD you kidding right? the first half of the movie was complete made up and not in the novel. or i just forgott that batgirl f'cked batman in the novel, wait i didn't because it never happend
If you do watch another animated Batman after this, I highly recommend "Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker" (and if you can find it, the uncensored version). Great reaction!
Maybe the first two or three episodes of the Batman Beyond series, just to give you an update to who the characters are. But even without that, it's a movie that stands well enough on its own
@@nickreacts6394 Watching Return of the Joker without watching the Batman Beyond series would be weird. You'd miss out on things. Though you'd have to watch Batman The Animated Series first then Batman Beyond. Plus eventually Justice League and Justice League Unlimited at so point would be good content to.
I'd also recommend World's Finest: The Batman/Superman movie. It's the characters' first team-up in this continuity (shared between the Batman and Superman animated shows of the 90s, and several others, collectively the DC Animated Universe, which Batman Beyond is also part of), and has Mark Hamill reprise his role as The Joker, plus Tim Daly as Superman, Clancy Brown as Lex Luthor, and Dana Delaney (who voiced Andrea Beaumont here) as Lois Lane.
@@nickreacts6394 assuming you have no plans to watch the various DCAU tv shows, you should at least check out the Justice League Unlimited Season 2 Episode 13 "Epilogue" after "Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker"
This movie is part of the continuity of the DC animated tv universe that was going on during the 90's and early 2000's. The Joker shows up in other shows and movies after this one so yeah he doesn't die.
Even in the comic sequel, it shows the events that occured. They went through a manhole and Andrea was ready to kill Joker, but she hesitates. Before she can act, they're separated and Joker lives on.
In a wonderful touch, Stacy Keach voices both Andrea's father and the Phantasm. The whole film is *full* of wonderful little details. As you noticed. It's one of the best Batman films ever.
You have entered into the *DCAU: DC Animated Universe* , interconnected between a lot of tv animated shows from the 90s to the mid2000s, the Golden Age of DC on the small screen ^^ If you watch this series, you'll probably love it :) I really enjoyed your reaction, people often overlook this movie to focus on the more realistic live-actions ones, but I think a good Batman needs to feel comic-booky like this movie (I still love the other movies but it's different) ... thank you for this video, I'm glad you liked this movie :) This movie is connected to the *Batman: The Animated Series* , they made 4 movies out of this show, the 2nd one is *Batman vs Mr Freeze: Subzero* , which is a sequel to 2 episodes of the show focusing on Mr Freeze, later they made *Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman* , based on the series *The New Batman Adventures* (the 5th season of *Batman TAS* ) , and finally *Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker* , based on the *Batman Beyond* TV series, the sequel of *Batman TAS*
I really want to check out the Animated Series having learned that it's connected/ inspired this movie... do you have a recommended order for the DCAU? Is there an official list?
@@nickreacts6394 It's much simpler than the MCU or the Arrowverse but still a bit complicated because the production order and the airing order of episodes of these kinds of show is very different ^^ the DCAU is composed of Batman TAS, Superman TAS, The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond (and a bonus mini show: The Zeta Project), Static Shock, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, plus the mini web-series Gotham Girls and Lobo So, you can start by watching *Batman TAS* first, then *Superman TAS* Season 1, then Season 2 and 3 can be watched at the same time as *The New Batman Adventures* show, finding out a perfect order is hard, and there is only a few crossovers. Then after that you can watch *Batman Beyond* Season 1, then Season 2, *Static Shock* Season 1 aired at the same time as the second half of *Batman Beyond* Season 2, then *Batman Beyond* Season 3 after that :) You can watch *The Zeta Project* whenever you want after *Batman Beyond* but it's a small unpopular show hard to find on the internet legally I think :/ After that you should begin *Justice League* Season 1 before starting *Static Shock* Season 2, and start *JL* Season 2 before *SC* Season 3 but after that it should be how you want, and finally *Justice League: Unlimited* ^^
@@nickreacts6394 And also, I forgot about the movies, Batman vs Mr Freeze: Subzero has to be watched between *Batman TAS* and *The New Batman Adventures* , Batman: The Mystery of Batwoman can be watched after *TNBA* , and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker after *Batman Beyond* ^^
@@nickreacts6394 Well, for the DCAU you can genuinely get the best experience by going in release order (Batman: The Animated series, The new Batman adventures, Superman: The Animated series, Batman Beyond, Justice League and Justice League unlimited). It is a huge amount of content, but definitely worth it, these shows feature the definitive versions of many mainstay DC characters. For instance, they managed to turn Mr Freeze into one of the most interesting and emotionally complex villains out there.

One of the best subtle points about this film is the voice of the Phantasm and Carl Beaumont are the same guy. It's like the film knows what you're thinking.
Alfred's "My God." In his shock of Batman's cowl is still a chilling and awesome moment. Funny that Andrea says she doesn't like the mask but loves the cape, because Joker in Batman Beyond movie makes a similar comment about how he misses the cape.
I'm back here again watching this after hearing about the death of Kevin Conroy. So fucking sad. We've lost a legend in animation. Rest easy, Kevin. You will never be forgotten. 🦇
Andrea and the Phantasm were made up for this movie, but they are loosely based on several characters from the Batman Year 2 comic. In that comic the father of Bruce's girlfriend is a vigilante who actually predated Batman called the 'Reaper' who would murder criminals, and his actions caused his daughter to break up with Bruce and become a nun. Mask of the Phantasm played with the expectations of fans who read Year 2 and expected it to be the father again by making the villain the daughter. Andrea is named for the casting director for the cartoon series and movie, Andrea Romano. The comics character she is loosely based on was named Rachel Caspian. The two characters share very little in common besides for dating Bruce at one point and being associated with a vigilante who kills criminals. Rachel only met Bruce during Year 2 instead of them being together before he even came up with the idea to dress like a bat.
I saw this first in 1995 on a pirate VHS tape, and to this day it remains my favorite Batman film. Everything I want out of a Batman film is in this. It's perfect.
I saw this movie when it came out on VHS in 1994. I was 13 and I was a huge fan of Batman the animated series that was on Fox tv network everyday after school. This is still my favorite Batman movie( which includes all the live action & animated versions). I've probably have seen this Batman movie the most along with Tim Burton's 1989 Batman The animated series is so good and is definitely worth a deep dive. As well as Batman Beyond, Superman The animated series and Justice League. As for other animated Batman movies to recommend Batman year one, The Dark Knight Returns part one & two Superman/Batman Public Enemies Superman/Batman Apocalypse Batman Beyond Return of the Joker (uncensored version) Batman & Harley Quinn just to name a few. Mark Hamill just kills it as the Joker and Kevin Conroy is the definitive Batman voice. Love your channel and I'm also enjoying your Buffy Reactions. It's made me go back and rewatch the series again.
A few fun facts about this movie: 1. On the opening credits, the music is secretly the names of some of the staff backwards 2. Andrea is voiced by Dana Dalany (or however you spell it) who was so good she was brought back to play Lois Lane in Superman The Animated Series 3. You can actually hear Hamill break character when he’s talking to Arthur and he says “To find out” Either way, this movie is awesome
You can thank composer Shirley Walker for the music. She was best known for composing the music for Batman: The Animated Series and made the theme for Superman: The Animated Series. Walker was also known for the music of the first 3 Final Destination films as well. Her last ever score was for the 2006 remake of Black Christmas. She past away the year the remake of Black Christmas came out. Also fun fact, Hans Zimmer also worked on the music for Mask of the Phantasm, doing the synth parts.
That moment at your 25:12 is my favorite Joker moment in any Batman property. With no options left, with his own destruction imminent, Joker laughs in face of Death itself. It's perfect.
Andrea Beaumont was invented for this movie; the Phantasm is based on the Reaper from the Batman: Year Two storyline by Frank Miller. Almost 20 years after this movie, Andrea finally appeared in the comics, during the storyline where Bruce and Catwoman almost finally tied the knot.
First time watching your channel. Great commentary. Better than most reaction channels. Love the joke you said about Batman’s use of the cape against Joker’s RC planes. “Bring that up to Edna next time” LOL! Subscribing.
Mark Hamill's first voice acting role was in Ralph Bakshi's "Wizards" way back in the same year Star Wars came out (He voiced Shawn, the leader of the protectors of the king of the mountain faeries) So he's been a voice actor just as long as he's been a movie actor. And yes, the "Joker Venom" is one of the Joker's primary murder methods. It makes you laugh yourself to death and leaves you with a sickly grin. In the first live action movie (The Tim Burton version) The joker called it "Smilex" but it's really the Joker Venom.
The actress who played Andrea is also the voice of Lois Lane in the animated Superman Adventures so I that throws me every time. Thanks for the reaction.
If you want to watch the wrap-up of that Era of the DC Universe (Batman: TAS, Justice League, Batman Beyond and all those shows/movies, including Batman: Mask of the Phantasm) you need to watch the "Justice League Unlimited" series, season 2, episodes 9 to 13 (from "Question Authority" to "Epilogue"). They kinda made a 5-episodes "movie".
I used to have the comic book of Mask of the Phantasm. It was quite darker than this movie, I particularly remember that scene where the Phantasm finds one of their would be victims already dead and the Joker cam on him. In the comic instead of a camera, it was dynamite and Joker was singing a cheery song before it blew up.
This was the first theatrical release of the Paul Dini era of DC animation (starting with Batman: The Animated Series IIRC), the entirety of which is worth a watch.
10:17 well in The Animated Series most bad guys only ever see a cape waving in darkness, so makes sense that they'd think it's Batman. And Batman does use smoke bombs to get away so he could have smoke around him.
This movie pretty much started me on the road to seeking more mature themes in my comics and cartoons. And I was like 8. 🤣 Correction: I was 5. I first watched it when I was 8 or 9. Oh, and since you mentioned the blue in his suit. A lot of the blue is used to contrast the black. Partly because Batman The Animated Series was all drawn and colored on black paper, which helped to really give it its unique visual design and atmosphere.
I think if you look into it you'll find a lot of similarities between this and The Batman 2022 Both Phantasm and Riddler kill crooked politicians/mafia, they are both a reflection of what batman could have become, they both show batman that vengeance isn't the option, both movies shows the beginnings of batman and his detective work as they're both murder mysteries, funnily enough in both movies batman spies on the love interest with binoculars Robert Paterson specifically mentions this movie as inspiration for his Batman portrayal Funnily enough this movie is more inspired by Citizen Kane than other batman media
Adore the film still my favourite Batman film to date. Pretty much every voice actor and character design is pulled straight from the Animated Series from Kevin Conroy as Batman to Mark Hamill as the Joker. side note but if you loved this you'll love the Arkham Games they feel like the animated series put into game form also feature many of the same voice actors. In terms of timeline the modern day parts of the film are set sometime in Season 1 as there's an early episode of BTAS where they first use the Bat-signal but it's already in use by the time of Mask of the Phantasm so this has got to take place after that episode. Also loved the Timeless 1930s look combined with elements of the retro 1950s. The film is set in the 1990s when Bruce was in his early 30s with the flashbacks taking place in the 1980s when Bruce was in his early 20s. It takes place within the DCAU (DC Animated universe ) that includes The Animated Series of Batman and Superman, New Batman Adventures, The Justice League, and Batman Beyond to name a few, also a few animated movies as well. There also stand alone animated films like Under the Red Hood, Dark Knight Returns, and Long Halloween that are animated but not apart of the DCAU universe think of them as Elseworld stories. DC also has another Animated universe that includes movies like Justice League Dark · The Flashpoint Paradox · Justice League: War etc. These are not linked to the DCAU and act as their own shared universe. You can pretty much tell with the Art style which movies are connected as both the DCAU and the new Animated universe have much different art styles. The Animated Series has this same art style and look but over time from The New Batman adventures (mid 1990s) and The Justice League (2000s) added more modern stuff to show time passing. DC does have another timeless city called Fawcett City in Northeastern Wisconsin that has a timeless 1930s look for mostly tourism reasons, also the home of The Question a really cool DC character. But the Animated Series was heavily inspired by Tim Burtons Gotham city but diving more into the timeless 1930s look and feel.
fun fact. in the comics, batman actually met flashpoint batman, who was batman in another reality. in that world, bruce died, his mother went insane with grief and became the joker, and his father became batman. when his father told his mother about him being alive in the main timeline, she actually had her sanity return, but it came back when he told her he also became batman. which means she didn't want that life for him. and when bruce met his father in that timeline, he told bruce to stop being batman, as that is not the life he wanted for his son. they both never wanted this for bruce.
Mark Hamill's Joker is the single most popular depiction of the character. Even years after The Animated Series and its movies ended, he kept coming back to the character because of how much fans loved him as the Joker. I believe John DiMaggio from Under the Red Hood was only the second actor to voice Joker besides Mark after he 'left his mark' on the character.
The sad part is that there was 2 follow ups to this movie, with a third one being scraped. Mild technical spoiler: In a planned second Batman Beyond movie there were apparently plans to start the movie by Bruce attending Andreas funeral. He was supposed to have found out years ago where she went to, but due to his own life situation before Terry entered the picture he never visited her until it was too late. I even remember reading that Bruce would've brought up that Andrea never had friends or family of her own because she was consumed by the Phantasm mantle just like Bruce at the end got possessed by the cowl of the Bat which led to his downfall. I wonder if this would've been allowed to be shown if that movie could've gotten made back then, considering how dark and depressing it would've been.
There's a 4 minute compilation of Mark Hamill's joker laughs on UA-cam and it still doesn't contain them all. That guy is a master Also, i love how you didn't know Mark was the joker, but you actually mentioned Darth Vader and Luke at the end
The story of this movie was basically 100% original. The Beaumonts and the Phantasm were created specifically for this movie, which made the identity of the Phantasm a great mystery for audiences since it was brand new.
You’ve already got the comments about needing to check out Batman TAS, and whatnot. But this version of Batman continues from Batman TAS, to The New Batman Adventures, to the movie Batman/Superman World’s Finest (a combination of Batman TAS and Superman TAS), to Justice League, to Justice League Unlimited, to the Arkham Games (the games are considered canon adjacent to the original series). To many of us, this is the DEFINITIVE Batman. The voice actors’ portrayals of these characters are the same voices a lot of us read the comics in. Those shows make up the DC Animated Universe (DCAU) that we grew up on. I didn’t have a local comic book store in the town I grew up in, and the major freeway that connected us to next city that did wasn’t built yet. The only comics I had were Spider-Man comics my grandma would bring me whenever she visited. For a long time, this was the only version of the character of Batman that I knew. The show holds a very special place in my heart, and my life as a whole.
Mark Hamill is the ultimate Joker , animated movies, shows, video games... he voiced him for almost 30 years now.
Whenever i read a comic with the Joker in it i imagine Mark's voice
Him and Conroy are Batman and Joker for me
@@rayparker4231 exactly
I mean, I love Mark Hamill, but the voice performance stood out to me when I didn't even think it was him... amazing work!
@@nickreacts6394 you need to see more of his Joker . His best performance i personally think is in the Arkham games ( best Joker design outside the comics as well)
@@nickreacts6394 You can't spell Mark Hamill without 'Arkham'...
Whenever I read a batman comic I can always hear Kevin and Mark's voices in my head.
Some time earlier in his 1980s, Hamill played Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on stage in 'Amadeus'. I suspect that he learned to cackle in that role.
Exactly 💯
YES
Also it is the birthplace of Harley Quinn.
This movie is in serious contention for best Batman film ever. That ending with Andrea on the boat and her dialogue is amazing.
Such a perfect tragic love story... and I agree with how good it is!
I agree. It's easily my favourite Batman film. The acting, the music, the atmosphere, the story... everything lands perfectly.
There aren't many good Batman movies but this is definitely one of the best.
I love this movie! Also, Mark Hamill nails it as Joker. So terrifying.
Agreed 100%!

Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are probably the best Batman and Joker pairing ever..
Probably ha you said probably no no they are the best Joker and Batman
This movie is legitimately one of the best Batman movies ever made, in my opinion. I love that it's a legitimately good mystery, on top of everything else. The artwork, the music, the romance, the voice acting, everything about it is phenomenal.
I miss Kevin so much. we lost the best voice actor and batman will never be the same
I’m so glad you were you able to watch Batman Mask of the Phantasm, the best Batman film ever.
Me too.
@@nickreacts6394 actually, it’s inspired by Batman TAS.
Mark Hamill is probably the most iconic Joker voice.
I might have to if it's anything like this!
@@nickreacts6394 The only difference is that with a PG rating they were able to go slightly more graphic in this film than the show, but the show has the same great writing, animation, and performances.
I one hundred percent agree with this!
This is a great starting point for Kevin Conroy and Mark hamil as Batman and the Joker
I'm am SO glad I decided to check this one out... like you said, a great intro!
There's a comic sequel to this movie that explains what happened to Joker & Andrea. Andrea took Joker to a nearby sewer grate to kill him, but the explosions knocked the clown out of her grasp, and he dove into the sewer water and escaped (explaining why we see him in future episodes)
Also, Fun Fact: The man who voiced the Phantasm also voiced Andrea's father, showing she wants the last voice her victims hear is of the man they murded. It's also a curveball/red herring the writers/directors through to make you think it's him
Oh wow, I never realized the va for the father was the same as for the phantom!
He’s also the dude who played the lead cop (Sgt Stedenko) in Up in Smoke 😄
Andrea was voiced by Dane Delane. After this movie she later give her voice to Lois Lane in Superman The Animated Series.
I'm actually kinda surprised someone doesn't know that Mark Hamill voiced the Joker. He is like, THE Joker. It's his most iconic role next to being Luke Skywalker. Every voice actor that has gotten the Joker role will always be compared to Hamill, for better or worse. If you want to get into the DCAU, then here's a pretty good order (they're sorted in release order):
1. Batman: The Animated Series Season 1
2. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
3. Batman: The Animated Series Season 2
4. Batman/Mr. Freeze: Sub Zero
5. Superman: The Animated Series Season 1
6. Superman: The Animated Series Season 2
7. The New Batman Adventures
8. Superman: The Animated Series Season 3
9. Batman Beyond Season 1
10. Batman Beyond Season 2
11. Batman Beyond Season 3
12. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
13. Justice League Season 1
14. Justice League Season 2
15. Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman
16. Justice League Unlimited Season 1
17. Justice League Unlimited Season 2
18. Justice League Unlimited Season 3
19. Batman & Harley Quinn
20. Justice League vs The Fatal Five
One of the most interesting about the DCAU is the gradual escalation.
Don't forget _Static Shock_
It's a side story mostly, but it is kinda needed to understand a big Justice League arc.
@@christopherwall2121static shock deserves better- that show changed my life as a kid and you’re right, JLU ain’t an ending without Static
This is my favorite Batman movie from when I was a kid. I missed it in theaters, but I absolutely loved it when I saw it
It's so good!
I grew up in the era of _Batman: The Animated Series_ and was lucky enough to catch this movie during its VERY limited theatrical release. If you thought it was good like this, imagine seeing it in a theater! The shot of Joker laughing in the flames with the swell of choral music still gives me chills; it's just _masterful._
I'm an illustrator for a living and _BTAS_ was a major influence on my drawing style along with the Disney Renaissance movies and _Anastasia._ I got the fancy boxed DVD set of the entirety of _BTAS_ the Christmas before my final semester of art school, and for a large portion of the time I was working on my illustration thesis I had that set playing on the TV next to my desk. To say that series - and this movie - are pillars of my upbringing is an understatement.
They made a comic which shows what happened during the ending and after the film, it explains alot
Now this…. Is my all time favorite Batman movie. I’m so glad you did this!! Not many people even talk about this one for some reason… let alone react to it! You’re awesome ☺️
You don't often see the DCAU Joker as a secondary villain.
This was animated by the same studio that did AKIRA. They reused the keyframing for the motorcycle kick Kaneda does for Bruce as a homage.
Very well said! I'm not a comic reader myself, but this is easily my favorite Batman romance
Mark Hamill voices the Joker, yes, the Clown Prince of Crime is voiced by Luke Skywalker.
I saw this a young kid in the theater. Still my favorite Batman film, period. Batman Beyond: The Return of the Joker is pretty cool, too.
I can certainly understand this choice, I was so impressed! And I really want to see Batman Beyond, although I think I'll likely check out the Animated Series first (as I've been advised that will help the viewing experience)
Return of the Joker is awsome and dark
andrea is original to this film but the phantasm design is based on the reaper from the year two comics. (at least that what most people think) even batman being framed is from year two.
The design is great, but props to the writers for coming up with such a compelling original character!
And they are only the tip of the iceberg

omg.. I never caught onto that but holy sh’t that’s amazing. Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy forever
I love how Batman first putting on the cape and cowl isn't treated as some triumphant moment. Its more like a tragic prison he's made for himself
In a wonderful touch, Stacy Keach voices both Andrea's father and the Phantasm. The whole film is *full* of wonderful little details. As you noticed. It's one of the best Batman films ever.
Rest in Peace Kevin Conroy THE Dark Knight what a wonderful man he was and an incredible voice actor

This movie is connected to the *Batman: The Animated Series* , they made 4 movies out of this show, the 2nd one is *Batman vs Mr Freeze: Subzero* , which is a sequel to 2 episodes of the show focusing on Mr Freeze, later they made *Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman* , based on the series *The New Batman Adventures* (the 5th season of *Batman TAS* ) , and finally *Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker* , based on the *Batman Beyond* TV series, the sequel of *Batman TAS*

@@nickreacts6394 It's much simpler than the MCU or the Arrowverse but still a bit complicated because the production order and the airing order of episodes of these kinds of show is very different ^^ the DCAU is composed of Batman TAS, Superman TAS, The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond (and a bonus mini show: The Zeta Project), Static Shock, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, plus the mini web-series Gotham Girls and Lobo
So, you can start by watching *Batman TAS* first, then *Superman TAS* Season 1, then Season 2 and 3 can be watched at the same time as *The New Batman Adventures* show, finding out a perfect order is hard, and there is only a few crossovers.

*Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy are the only voices I hear when I think of Batman & Joker. Just brilliant*

A few fun facts about this movie:
1. On the opening credits, the music is secretly the names of some of the staff backwards
2. Andrea is voiced by Dana Dalany (or however you spell it) who was so good she was brought back to play Lois Lane in Superman The Animated Series
3. You can actually hear Hamill break character when he’s talking to Arthur and he says “To find out”
Either way, this movie is awesome
Mark is probably THE joker on a lot of peoples eyes because he’s voiced the joker in nearly everything batman related for a long time
Saw this in the theater for free. Won tickets from my local comic book store

Neither Joker or Phantasm died. Both reappear in the movie Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.
And the next time she appears is the epilogue.
This was the first theatrical release of the Paul Dini era of DC animation (starting with Batman: The Animated Series IIRC), the entirety of which is worth a watch.
Would you recommend starting with the Animated Series? Or perhaps the DCAU?
10:17 well in The Animated Series most bad guys only ever see a cape waving in darkness, so makes sense that they'd think it's Batman. And Batman does use smoke bombs to get away so he could have smoke around him.
This movie is both inspired by Citizen Kane, Batman: Year One and Batman: Year Two. Such an amazing film and my personal favorite Batman picture
I'm still surprised that some people don't know that mark Hamill played joker
Interestingly enough after this Dana Delaney (voice of Andrea Beaumont) got the job as Lois Lane’s voice actress in Superman the animated series.
Haha that is pretty funny, and I'm glad she got more work after this great film!
This movie pretty much started me on the road to seeking more mature themes in my comics and cartoons. And I was like 8. 🤣
Correction: I was 5. I first watched it when I was 8 or 9.
Oh, and since you mentioned the blue in his suit. A lot of the blue is used to contrast the black. Partly because Batman The Animated Series was all drawn and colored on black paper, which helped to really give it its unique visual design and atmosphere.
I think if you look into it you'll find a lot of similarities between this and The Batman 2022
Both Phantasm and Riddler kill crooked politicians/mafia, they are both a reflection of what batman could have become, they both show batman that vengeance isn't the option, both movies shows the beginnings of batman and his detective work as they're both murder mysteries, funnily enough in both movies batman spies on the love interest with binoculars
Robert Paterson specifically mentions this movie as inspiration for his Batman portrayal
Funnily enough this movie is more inspired by Citizen Kane than other batman media
Although called the Phantasm, Andrea and her father were clearly inspired by a character called the Grim Reaper in the story Batman: Year Two.
I remember watching this movie on 📀, when I was a preteen over 14 years ago.
I think it's one of those animations you could enjoy as a child, and then grow to truly appreciate as an adult
@@nickreacts6394that’s my all time favorite Batman movie
"idk if this is a young batman...an older batman"
Me: yes
Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are “The” official voices of Batman and Joker‼️
fun fact. in the comics, batman actually met flashpoint batman, who was batman in another reality. in that world, bruce died, his mother went insane with grief and became the joker, and his father became batman. when his father told his mother about him being alive in the main timeline, she actually had her sanity return, but it came back when he told her he also became batman. which means she didn't want that life for him. and when bruce met his father in that timeline, he told bruce to stop being batman, as that is not the life he wanted for his son. they both never wanted this for bruce.
No one has topped this movie yet. It remains the all-time best Batman film.
I'm so glad I watched it!
I hope you looked it up, it definitely is Mark Hamill.
The sad part is that there was 2 follow ups to this movie, with a third one being scraped. Mild technical spoiler:
In a planned second Batman Beyond movie there were apparently plans to start the movie by Bruce attending Andreas funeral.
The opening "lyrics" are not a foreign language but names of staff members sung backwards!
There's a 4 minute compilation of Mark Hamill's joker laughs on UA-cam and it still doesn't contain them all. That guy is a master
Also, i love how you didn't know Mark was the joker, but you actually mentioned Darth Vader and Luke at the end
The story of this movie was basically 100% original. The Beaumonts and the Phantasm were created specifically for this movie, which made the identity of the Phantasm a great mystery for audiences since it was brand new.
really at it's heart, this movie is about when you let "the one" go. neither one of them were every truly happy after this.
You’ve already got the comments about needing to check out Batman TAS, and whatnot.
But this version of Batman continues from Batman TAS,
to The New Batman Adventures,
to the movie Batman/Superman World’s Finest (a combination of Batman TAS and Superman TAS),
to Justice League,
to Justice League Unlimited,
to the Arkham Games (the games are considered canon adjacent to the original series).
