  • Railfanning isn’t always for the faint of heart, and railfanning a city like Gary, Indiana definitely fits into that category. Gary is not the safest place to be at night and not the easiest to railfan, however the risks are worth the reward as regional freight and passenger carrier Chicago, South Shore and South Bend comes alive at night when the passenger trains take a short hiatus. Watch as two GP38-2’s lug a long empty coal train up to the elevated tracks, another pair of GP38-2’s heads towards Michigan City looking for work and the first passenger train of the morning makes its regular stop at Gary, at 1:30 in the morning.

Awesome night action! Great video. Have not rail fanned there since 1995.

I know exactly where that is. Sadly, it seems like some of the best spots are in the roughest of neighborhoods.

Great Video! Depending on where you go at night here or anyplace, it can be a challenge! I haven't been on Train #101 in years...it often carries the "late night" crowds who have perhaps been to a Chicago show, or a sports event, and those workers who work from 4pm to 12 Midnight, and commute into the city when everyone else is heading home! Great night shots of the South Shore Freight...the former, "Verango River Boys" who used to operate the South Shore Railroad outdid themselves when they decided to have painted those GP38-2s into the colors that spell South Shore...Orange with Tuscan Red Lettering! :)
