- Western nations vow they’re only “de-risking” their economies from China and not “decoupling” -- whatever that means.
We speak with George Magnus at Oxford University’s China Centre about Micron, the growing trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies and how EU firms are being pulled from both sides.

It was five years ago that US picked ZTE and Huawei and banned them as much as they could. There was much speculation at the time China would retaliate on US companies like Apple and Tesla, but they never did.
Now the Chinese decide that their memory chip manufacturing is strong enough so that they can ban Micron. What we see are well-calculated steps that China take to both grow their own chip manufacturing and hit back when they see fit. They never did it because they weren't at the "self-reliance "stage yet. With Micron, the Chinese can make whatever Micron makes. Xi is always stressed about China self-reliance. Once China achieved this, Western companies became useless to them.

Micron's storage system itself is not a particularly irreplaceable high-tech. The market competition is greater than the market monopoly, storage belongs to the buyer's market.
When the United States clamors for the reorganization and decoupling of its supply chain, the reorganization of its customer and market relations is an inevitable result.
Yeah, there's a reason why they didn't dare touch our CPU or GPU designers. They are a decade behind us in high end semi design.
Micron's DRAM business is a commodity business -- and a distant #3 -- but that's not the point here. There are only three major players in this chip segment -- Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. And they collectively own 95% of the market and none of them necessariliy China's best allies.
@@tooltalk maybe you are right. But if I do not use DDR5, but only adopt DDR3 or 4. What is that market shares? China is actually helping the west to de-risk.
China will stop selling low margin, labour intensive consumable goods and at the same time China will stop buying high margin western (mostly European) cars and high end fashion products.
Western products usually cater to the rich people so the rich Chinese will choose Chinese products while Chinese products are usually for the average person (good value for money.)
Western countries can start to send factories to SEA or South Asia while Chinese companies will take over the high profit margin sector dominated by west in China.
Both sides happy.
no, west will not last if losing supply from china, because EU and US has no capacity to manfufacture anything, the whole supply chains are from china, from materials to parts to finished product, s, also china does not buy EU cars at all, those german cars are not from germany, but has jonit venu in china, its a domestic manufacture of china paying tax to china, so its not from west, also those oil car is on decline in china market, NOW its day of EV, not oil car any more, BYD dominates chinese market today, also its another wrong you say EU has high end product, no, EU and US has no any high End product china needs anmore, and most chips are from TW and south korea, not US, EU has no chips, also the china export to EU and US, 75% of products are high to middle end products ranging from eletrconic products such as computers ,sensors,.. and all electrial and mechanical products and metal steel product,,,,, and rare earth and baterries, as well as chips, china is 3rd largest chip maker in world, ,,,,,, china does not produce low marin labor intenensive anymore, those are now from vietnam and indonesia and mexico, china does not want any polluting and low added value industry in the country any more, but china still owns all supply chains, 80% of factories in vietnam are owned by chinese companies, and 100% production material textures are supplied from chinese companies , so EU and US wont befinites
they can't send factories to SEA or South Asia, bcoz they don't even own those factories. They just place orders to Chinese factories. China is moving low end manufacturing factories to Belt & Road countries
I don't think China can just transition from low margin to high margin manufacturing so easily. What's more likely to happen is as Western countries decouple from China, Chinese goods will become even cheaper than they are now. This will increase consumption within China which will raise living standards for the Chinese in exchange for a decrease in exports without the Western market. However, lower prices also means lower margins, thus lower savings and lower investment. If this happens, we might see a slow down in BRI and China transition from an investment led economy to a consumption based economy.

In Germany, some people prefer to endure pain when the Anglo-Saxon empire is bullying them 😂😂😂
The Chinese government's punishment does not include the consumer market, but focuses on the critical information infrastructure, which Micron's share is not high. Major suppliers of such facilities, such as Huawei, ZTE, and Inspur and other communication equipment, server, and supercomputing suppliers, have long been included in the sanctions list by the United States, so this punishment is more symbolic.
check the market share in the end of this year. you will understand you are totally wrong
And people in china will not buy any Micron products any more.
You might want to look up something called "Network Access License", turns out China consider the internet to be critical information infrastructure and require every device connected to internet, that means phones and modems to obtain an NAL. Wanna guess if they'll grant NAL to new devices containing Micron chips?
This is a Chinese statement. All Micron users related to China will not take the risk of using Micron products. I will check my suppliers to ensure that Micron chips are not used
Of course de-risking is not the same as decoupling in the same manner that democracy is not hypocrisy.
That’s is why communism is the better form of leadership ? 😂
Yeaaaah right
@@d.o.g573 what works for China is non of your business given they don’t invade countries to conform to their system like democratic countries. Where are you from? I can share your country’s history with you😆
Why asking why? China already stated national security reason.
Just like the United States.
The point is: I don't care if the USA and China want to have an economic conflict or other conflict of any kind. That's why we maybe should leave NATO all together.
And just focus on doing business with anyone who wants to do business. If the EU goes more towards NATO, there are other countries people and especially companies can move to.
India is neutral, South Africa is neutral. And those are also growing economies as well.
>>That's why we maybe should leave NATO all together.
Dude, it's the US that wants war...who keeps screwing around with Taiwan which is 80 clicks off of China's coast? Does China mess around with US neighbors? NO! They don't!
@@tooltalk No, NATO.
Funny how Micron wasn't a security risk until Chinese chips got banned in the US. Maybe it's something else 🤭
yeah, they have every right to retaliate
@@xinyiquan666 Exactly. Tit for tat
Why not!
Funny, how huawei wasn’t a security risk until she lead in 5 G , maybe it’s something else 😀
Since there was never any evidence about the Huawei security allegations and the accusations came from Donald Trump, there is 100% chance it was a lie. Joe Biden knew it was a lie but he ran with it because that fit his objective. Joe Biden and many people in the US and Europe have been very unhappy to see a non white country has a spine to say no to them.
The Chip match has kicked off.
存储芯片是可替代的,先进的运算芯片无法替代。
@@suryaprasanth9105 It will take at least 8 years for China to become independent。
This is a war of economic independence。
I would do the same as China if I were in her shoes. Must always stand up against the Matrix's bullying.
US: bans ZTE
China: bans Micron Chips
US: *Pikachu face*
' I Started A Joke ' but the joke was on me.
Why complain - China is doing exactly what you always want it to do - namely de-risking the supply chain. More importantly, China is following the same actions that the US has done to ZTE and Huawei.
If Canada sent chineses students home from universities, They would all close. We need China, but not Russia, I never saw made in russia on anything good.
Sure kid, Russian refined uranium supplies 25% of the US's nuclear reactors, up until recently the US relied on Russian made rockets to ferry astronauts to space, Russian weapons, Boeing planes are made from Russian aluminium and titanium ingots. Even today, the US and EU buys Russian crude and gas, and uranium....
Without Russia selling, china could not produce so much. Like Canada's steal to China. Canada, Russia will be Asia for the chinese and middle east megacitys.
If DW put "China" in title of every story released, we might get permanent viewership from the 50c army. Nice to see the troll army interacting on European channel, in such active manner
It’s easier to list them this way…so nice of them isn’t it ?!
But you don’t mind your own CIA bots? Double standard much?
US bans Huawei, China bans Micron. Sounds fair to me
Now they calling China 🇨🇳 but they won't answer the phone.
There is no bite to this bark. They are only restricting their use in major infrastructures, which is not a big deal.
G7 should improve their legacy until they can . Time is running fast
Decoupling verses derisking
Decoupling is pretty straight forward. Rehoming you manufacturing 1st & foremost. Deincentiving investment in China. Mostly eliminating business with China.
Derisking is some of what's involved with decoupling by moving technology or multi sourcing things that could be used to blackmail you into submitting to terms you disagree with.
Personally, I'd decouple from their economy as China uses its profits from doing business with the west to undermine the west.
I don't think you get it, decoupling isn't in your control, China is decoupling with you regardless if you decouple or de-risk, and China actually have the industry, domestic market and trillion $ trade surplus to decouple.
Your choice isn't between de-risk or de-couple, your choice is if your survive or perish when China decouples with you.
Yes, you want to decouple from China, but can you decide now. Americans are shouting and shouting over there, but they and European capitalists are still desperately investing in China. Get rid of the Chinese market and they die, or continue to cooperate with China and achieve mutual benefit. Everyone is well aware that continuing economic cooperation with China is a chronic death for Western countries, but with the global economic downturn, Western capitalists also need to survive. Do you think the country is important or their money is important in the eyes of capital? Don't be silly. Wait and see, the West will inevitably be greeted by the slowly declining West and the slowly rising West. You roar but feel helpless.
ban us product, then slowly remove usd for local currency in some asia region
😅
What is the problem? Is it not the Collected west trying to "derisk" or decouple" from China? In fact China is doing exactly what the collected west is trying to do by cutting out Micron.
Its only fair for China to cite National Security threat. China has learnt from USA, well, what do you expect!! China needs to give USA a dose of its own medicine. Bitter right?
Everyone, what is the price of your SSD now? Look at what price last year? And the Samsung factory will never have a fire again! I Why???
Japan and Korea probably not read the case of Toshiba Japan and what happened to Toshiba and Japan from USA actions
Those countries are white washed. They love their abusers
Good job China! 🎉
Thats what US said in G7 economic coercion and thats what Beijing did now.
US did it as section all over the world.
The term economic coercion doesn't apply to the US.
