  • Western nations vow they’re only “de-risking” their economies from China and not “decoupling” -- whatever that means.
    We speak with George Magnus at Oxford University’s China Centre about Micron, the growing trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies and how EU firms are being pulled from both sides.

      Dream on. Dictator Xi walks a fine line. He wants power (see similarly minded dictators like Saddam, Putin, Mussolini, etc.), and he wants to harm the U.S. However, Dictator Xi also does not want to risk losing power by destabilizing China's economy. If America stops importing goods from China, Xi is toast. Talk tough all you want, but Xi will do his best to not cross the line into a full-blown trade war.

China is just using politics as a tit for tat but in reality it is to allow their Chinese tech company to sell the newly developed DRAM chip to the commercial and consumer market. no, west will not last if losing supply from china, because EU and US has no capacity to manfufacture anything, the whole supply chains are from china, from materials to parts to finished product, s, also china does not buy EU cars at all, those german cars are not from germany, but has jonit venu in china, its a domestic manufacture of china paying tax to china, so its not from west, also those oil car is on decline in china market, NOW its day of EV, not oil car any more, BYD dominates chinese market today, also its another wrong you say EU has high end product, no, EU and US has no any high End product china needs anmore, and most chips are from TW and south korea, not US, EU has no chips, also the china export to EU and US, 75% of products are high to middle end products ranging from eletrconic products such as computers ,sensors,.. and all electrial and mechanical products and metal steel product,,,,, and rare earth and baterries, as well as chips, china is 3rd largest chip maker in world, ,,,,,, china does not produce low marin labor intenensive anymore, those are now from vietnam and indonesia and mexico, china does not want any polluting and low added value industry in the country any more, but china still owns all supply chains, 80% of factories in vietnam are owned by chinese companies, and 100% production material textures are supplied from chinese companies , so EU and US wont befinites

      they can't send factories to SEA or South Asia, bcoz they don't even own those factories. They just place orders to Chinese factories. China is moving low end manufacturing factories to Belt & Road countries

      @IncrediblyStupidName Рік тому +2

      I don't think China can just transition from low margin to high margin manufacturing so easily. What's more likely to happen is as Western countries decouple from China, Chinese goods will become even cheaper than they are now. This will increase consumption within China which will raise living standards for the Chinese in exchange for a decrease in exports without the Western market. However, lower prices also means lower margins, thus lower savings and lower investment. If this happens, we might see a slow down in BRI and China transition from an investment led economy to a consumption based economy.

    The Chinese government's punishment does not include the consumer market, but focuses on the critical information infrastructure, which Micron's share is not high. Major suppliers of such facilities, such as Huawei, ZTE, and Inspur and other communication equipment, server, and supercomputing suppliers, have long been included in the sanctions list by the United States, so this punishment is more symbolic.

    Decoupling verses derisking
    Decoupling is pretty straight forward. Rehoming you manufacturing 1st & foremost. Deincentiving investment in China. Mostly eliminating business with China.
    Derisking is some of what's involved with decoupling by moving technology or multi sourcing things that could be used to blackmail you into submitting to terms you disagree with.
    Personally, I'd decouple from their economy as China uses its profits from doing business with the west to undermine the west.

    • @vlhc4642
      @vlhc4642 Рік тому +1

      I don't think you get it, decoupling isn't in your control, China is decoupling with you regardless if you decouple or de-risk, and China actually have the industry, domestic market and trillion $ trade surplus to decouple.
      Your choice isn't between de-risk or de-couple, your choice is if your survive or perish when China decouples with you.

    • @yigangwang7813
      @yigangwang7813 Рік тому

      Yes, you want to decouple from China, but can you decide now. Americans are shouting and shouting over there, but they and European capitalists are still desperately investing in China. Get rid of the Chinese market and they die, or continue to cooperate with China and achieve mutual benefit. Everyone is well aware that continuing economic cooperation with China is a chronic death for Western countries, but with the global economic downturn, Western capitalists also need to survive. Do you think the country is important or their money is important in the eyes of capital? Don't be silly. Wait and see, the West will inevitably be greeted by the slowly declining West and the slowly rising West. You roar but feel helpless.
