It's terrible and shameful when Jolson is vilified. He was a pioneer of desegregation, decades before MLK.

No mention of Warner Oland in the cast? Also. a few more remarks about blackface, particularly about how problematic it is, would have been welcome.

In relationship to this movie, it is not.

No they wouldn't. This introduction treats blackface just as it ought to be treated, soberly and sensibly as a cultural phenomenon of its time.

"No mention of Warner Oland in the cast?" Why should she have mentioned Warner Oland? "Also. a few more remarks about blackface, particularly about how problematic it is, would have been welcome."
No, they wouldn't have been. And blackface wasn't at all problematic. You just want to ruin everyone's enjoyment of a classic picture. Go to hell, movie-hater!

Time constraints re non mentioning Warner Oland likely. Should have, very good actor portraying many different peoples, like Lon Chaney and Anthony Quin, to name two. There is no need at any time to even mention blackface/ minstrels,or any via make up, costuming, accent, or any other way to depict other? If that was the case, period, there would never have been a Hollywood. A BBC film industry etc. Yes India, Japan, Germany elsewhere had thriving industries, based on their own cultures generally, still, but over time, in different ways Western, Eastern and all cultures have mixed in different ways generally beneficial for all involved. How different countries have advanced technically, means of travel elsewhere, wealth, profile, influence all that. Those owning the business wherever, make sure they get the best of it. That's how free enterprise works. Al Jolson blacking up in the 1927 movie the Jazz Singer, within the context, perspective, the use of it IN THE MOVIE. Has no connection at all, to other complications, any body cares to implicate, imply, connect with it, in a broader out side of the movie spectrum, and it is just not considerate to not only Jolson, but all involved with it,or the millions who have enjoyed it over many decades, including people of all color, culture etc etc!

I was pleasantly surprised at Jacqueline Stewart's restraint. Usually, she plays black supremacist, which is why I stopped watching her Sunday night feature.

Yeah, I clicked on this video, expecting it to be all about the fact of Jolson doing blackface, I was quite surprised. This isn’t a bad review of the movie.

Why is “the Jazz Singer” admired while “Gone With the Wind” was denounced ⁉️
“ The Jazz Singer” IS RASIST ‼️

@@margaretthomas8899 because TJS was about a Jewish family and an American born of jewish immigrants that wanted to make it the new world as an entertainer singing jazz music that was originally black music, so he needed to compete in that territory. GWTW is about a pampered southern belle who was transformed into a courageous adult woman and the historical stage of her life happened during the civil war, when slavery sill existed and it was customary to have black servants. In neither movie, racism or slavery IS the topic, but African Americans situation then was only circumstantial to the era the movie took place. As you surely understand, in GWTW they couldn’t portrait mammy as some Doctor in Psychology or Professional Therapist, or show footage of the Vietnam war. Makes sense?
