- Dan Mink, The Rhinestone Roper, instructs you on HOW TO LEARN THE BUTTERFLY. The Butterfly is a staple for all Ropers, Wild West Performers and Trick Ropers. It is the starting point for many rope tricks and routines. The Butterfly is the small to medium sized vertical loop that the Cowboy or Cowgirl takes back and forth across her body every couple spins. Learning this trick can be frustrating because the hand and wrist motions involved are so small that it's hard to identify why it doesn't work initially. This video may help you understand the trick and guide you past the pitfalls.
This man deserve a damn award for these instructional videos because when i got my first trick rope in 2015 there only 2 instructional videos i could find 1 was for was for a flat loop the other a vertical loop nd i had them figured pretty quick so i spent a lil over a year tryin to teach myself other tricks from watchin a this 10 mins long video of a Mexican feller ropin thru the whole video doin alot of different tricks but never sayin a word nd i would watch it over nd over tryin to learn the butterfly as my next trick but my rope got destroyed nd i didnt get another for years later and I got on here to look up videos soon as I got the ropes that I got now and within 2 days of watching this video ive gotten the butterfly close to perfected so I would like to tell you thank you so much for the information that you're providing thru these videos it makes a world of difference so again i say Thank You
HI Rusty, Congratulations on your Butterfly. You set a goal and achieved it. In two days no less! That's exciting. Watching these tricks with no explanation doesn't really work does it? Especially when you are an American Style roper watching a Charro. The Mexican rope and Honda are totally different than the spot cord and our honda. The Mexican burner on their honda grips the rope in a "V" shape not in an islet shape like ours. It allows them to perform the same trick at different speeds without the honda slipping. We are more limited given the fact that our honda slides so easily.

@@rhinestoneropers9204 yea its made a world of difference i had come a good distance on the butterfly before losin that rope but nothin was makin sense lol for good reason i now understand but i had nobody to ask i was introduced to rodeo nd the like from settin up arenas for Kings Bros Rodeo but the only 1 that knew anything of trick ropin was this real old man name Roy Lee King the oldest of the two King Bros that couldnt really do much speaking one day 3 or 4 was doin best of 5 headin a dummy well Roy Lee had picked up a this old sniff 4 strand nd starts doin a butterfly nd thats what made me wanna do it before that i knew nothin of such a thing but see Roy Lee couldnt hear hardly at all nd i asked enough questions about it to agrovate him of me so i never had anybody to tell anything about trick ropin other than what i could teach myself lol i was hopeless ive always badly desired the knowledge nd ability. So I bought that first rope nd you know the rest. You sharin this information will be the reason i learn how to do this i knew that the moment i watch this video so i just had to say thank you nd really cant say it enough so if you wouldnt mind me askin you before answerin. Which tricks would you suggest i work on next and in which order?

Hi Rusty, The order of the basic tricks is not important. Practice the one you are interested in or practice all of them in the same time period. Every gain you make will increase your general understanding and will make the other tricks more attainable. The Butterfly can be learned with any length of rope that is atleast 10 feet long. A 15 foot rope is good to practice flat loop tricks, like leg work and flat arounds. A 20 foot rope is good to learn the Wedding Ring. These are the tricks you should work on all at once. When you feel inspired you can learn the reverse butterfly and the Arrowhead. Then a 24 foot rope with a heavy honda can be used to learn the Texas Skip.

I've been trying to do this for about twenty years. This is the best instruction I've ever seen on doing it. Will have to get the ropes out again.

Hi Dan, nice instruction. I'm having a problem of the loop closing up on me. I've tried different weights and speeds ... but... I closed up the honda with some dental floss to prevent the loop from closing up. It's better but still not going as well as I'd like it. I'll go back and watch the video several more times to ensure I've soaked in all the nuggets you put into your explanations.

Hi Woody, do you think that the loop is going flat because the circle you are making with your wrist is not exaggerated enough? Or maybe your downward motion that you make when taking the loop across is too aggressive? I would suggest that you imagine yourself being very smooth as you go across. Make sure you guide the loop in a well defined circle and pop your wrist up out of the way as the loop comes across, rather than throwing it down in a "V". Once it gets to the other side, exaggerate the circle again.
I feel that it is helpful to believe that the rope has a will and wants to follow our instruction. So the rope is always doing what our wrist tells it to. We just have to be sure our wrist is conveying the correct message.
I believe that in a few days, your butterfly will start working and you won't even remember why it was difficult.

@@rhinestoneropers9204 Ah ha! exaggerated the circle by using more forearm movement. This is what I'm seeing in your video. I guess I've been trying to use the wrist only like a flat loop. The rope that I've had the honda tied off is giving me the movement because I'm able to make it happen. I did try another rope today that has the normal honda and WAS able to get a few more turns back and forth before the loop collapsed. I'll give it more exaggerated movements and see how it goes. I'll see if I can get a video done. Thanks Dan!!!

Thanks for the suggestion Driver. The Ocean Wave was my next filming project. Actually, tossing in a quick ocean wave is an excellent way to go from a butterfly to a flat loop.

So I got the trick down but how do I keep it from closing up I can make the loop just no longer then 10 seconds
HI Erika, the best thing is to video one of your better attempts and email it to me. Then I can watch and make suggestions. But, focus on making good circles and be smooth on your transition across your body.

How can it slide to become bigger&smaller? A fancy knot?
HI Seth,
The knot is called a honda. And it's not fancy at all. The end is folded over and wired to for a small loop that the rest of the rope can slide through. You use speed and centrifugal force to vary the size of the loop. This is explained in my video, The Art and Physics of Trick Roping.

Hi Pard', The short rope is 12' and the longer rope is about 21'. They are both spot cord rope that you can get at Western Stage Props in Las Vegas. I buy long lengths and cut it and put my own end knots and hondas on.

How flexible does your rope need to be? I mean can you do this as easily with a stiff Cowboy nylon rope as it is with a more limp rope??
Limp rope
Hi Kim, the Butterfly is one trick that you can do as easily with a stiff rope as with a limp one. that is why many calf ropers can do a Butterfly with their rope. The Butterfly is a self correcting trick and that makes it good for using a calf rope.
