I saw it with my wife. My favorite joke was when Helen Mirren interrupted Barbie's crisis of not being pretty and said "margot robbie was not the correct casting to be making this point" 😂

I interpreted this scene with the older woman completely different. I do not think, Barbie recognized the inner beauty of the older woman (which I find realley ageist), but she acknowledges, that you can be beautiful at any age - something that is also very problematic in our society. Older women who look old are considered ugly and not considered real women anymore, because they are considered not desirable in a men's world. So, as an older woman, this kind of felt inclusive (though I'm still waiting for a Barbie with wrinkles).

I think it’s cool that all the advice Barbie was giving Ken is great advice for women. And when the Kens don’t get 50/50 at the end, you feel the injustice of it. You feel the desire to make things equal. It’s such a thoughtful way of showing what feminists want to achieve in the real world.

    • @tristanmayer5373
      @tristanmayer5373 10 місяців тому +43

Yeah I think people are missing the call to action element of that scene. It's essentially telling the audience that if they think inequality is bad in this fictional movie world, they should take some action to fix our real inequality in our real world.

@@masonguthrie1257 we definitely haven’t reached equality yet. Women are in a better space than the past but it’s not even close to equal. Plus right now women are actually losing rights. The movie illustrates this with ken seeing the real world and bringing patriarchy back to barbieland.

There was also a little bit towards the end where her husband goes “si, se puede” which is a nod to her breakout role in Disney’a Gotta Kick It Up. I LIT UP when I saw they had a trans actress playing one of the Barbies. As a black trans woman finding positive representation can be hard on either front, but this film knocked it out of the park. America Ferrera's monologue really got to me because the entire time I had a pit in my stomach saying "this is what you are signing up for, can you handle that?"

This movie was fantastic easy 9/10. Does a good job at navigating both the pros and cons of taking feminism to extreme and showing the reactionary extremism that can come from it. Very good thought provoking.

Just saw the movie and didn't know what to think at first, need to see it again but it was nevertheless very entertaining I was smiling throughout. Agree Ken should get a second movie. Loved Ryan Gosling in this! Ken needs a movie where he learns who he is without Barbie. But Barbie should also play a major role in this!

Watching this video, I was thinking Ken's like the "acceptable" boyfriend to the girl's parents, and not the "dangerous" guy that excited her and taught her to drive to evade the police, before she settled down with a stable man.

I was joking that it should have an end-credit scene mirroring transformers, with Ken in an interview with the guy from G.I. Joe, but it's a different company. I did read that Mattel does He-Man and She-Ra and thought Barbie meeting them could be a more-likely possibility of band-crossover.

There was no applause during my screening, not for any monologue or the end.
I enjoyed the film a lot, but I’m just stating how people reacted.
    The biggest applause was for
    1) the comment on how MR isn’t the best casting choice to make a certain point.
    2) the comment on DC fandom (in a WB movie)
    3) Ken’s sweatshirt

While the movie does posit Barbieland as the opposite of the Real World, the dynamic is not quite true because while the Kens are dismissed, they are never brutalized or violated in Barbieland, and the opposite is very much not true of Real World.
Granted I know the dark dangers are not gonna be explored too much in a Barbie movie, but just something to keep in mind when building the opposite worlds idea.

In my last 20 years as an employee, MOST of my bosses have all been women; heck, at this exact moment, I have a total of 5 women above me in the chain of command in my workplace (my Direct supervisor, Senior supervisor, Floor Manager, Project Manager and General Manager).

Barbie was excellent. I loved it. So much depth. It's Pro Men and Women. A wonderful story about self-realization and growing up told from the feminine perspective. Great humor and fantastic visuals. The best performance in Gosling's career. No scene or performance is wasted. Margot is a movie a star. This has to be a Best Picture Contender once award season kicks off.
