You know when a song is a classic when each time you hear a new version of it, it becomes your favourite. From Tim Buckley's original folk ballad, through Robert Plant's version and the Celtic lament of This Mortal Coil (Elizabeth Fraser sublime). Now the king of suave paints his magic. Orchestra, choir and some fine fretwork from a young Ollie Thompson. The song deserves this.
@fin3572: I appreciated your comment. I'm a huge fan of Tim Buckley; which naturally led me to become a ridiculous fan of his son, Jeff. I think this is a song that has forunately been treated with the respect and tenderness it deserves - due to the fact that every version has been covered beautifully by the musicians you mentioned. It never fails to make me weep. (You probably already know all this, but I'll ramble on anyway. lol.) Apparently, after This Mortal Coil recorded "Song To The Siren" (f'king "sublime" is right, lol.), Elizabeth developed a relationship with Jeff Buckley. There's an interview with E. Fraser where she speaks about their brief but, meaningful relationship. Her beautiful face says all. And it is a hearbreak to watch her try to get through the topic of Jeff's death. It's just one of those bittersweet, strange examples of how the world throws people together. A song about a man, knowing he will drown, as the sea breaks his boat around him, being called to his end, by the "song of the siren" (?). Tim Buckley's own version is so moving. This Mortal Coil covers the song - and it is ethereal, haunting. Then, Elizabeth, by mere happenstance, develops something very special with Jeff Buckley. Who was a near carbon-copy of his estranged father - in looks, talent, and that icredible voice. Just as Jeff was beginning to blow people's minds with his musical talents - he is taken by the Mississippi River. Drowned. So incredible and so tragic. One of too many musicians who should've lived forever. Thank you. Take Care.😺💖🎶🎸
One thing that may not be noted anywhere as much as it should be about Bryan is his PHENOMENAL sense of pitch. To be able to t hear himself and accurately gauge notes and pitch on stage, like this, is a very rare gift. He is not wearing earpieces, as most do. Instead, Bryan is relying upon his own amazingly finetuned hearing to do what most rely on technology to do. This is totally badass.
This is not only an incredibly beautiful performance of a great song, but a performance befitting the occasion. Commemorating 100 years since the sinking of the Titanic. No tricks, no "show, just walks up to the mic, sings wonderfully, takes a polite bow and walks away. Wonderful.
Each interpretation is from each performer. Bryan Ferry has made many song his own simply by singing it. Thank you Tim Buckley for this gift of a song.
Bryan Ferry rocks as a "dulcet voiced" soft spoken sub-god. If you know anything about what his father's profession was, it makes you cry that this man utilized his artistic and musical talent to make the late 20th century and early 21st century better that he is here. He appears very posh but he is a self-made man.
I don't know how many countless times I've watched and listened to this song and it still remains so fresh and beautiful... Amazing performance and Bryan Ferry has poured his heart into the song.
An absolute legend of pioneering British new music. I remember Viva, the Roxy Music early live album. Both ends burning at high volume is a great memory for me😊
Beautiful song. I've never heard it before. Bryan is always such a natural on the stage. You can tell he'd rather be there than anywhere else. His joy of performance is undeniable.
@@CheradanineZakalwe I had that album (It'll End in Tears) about the time it came out. I gave all of my vinyl to my nieces and nephews. One of them has it now. I didn't even recognize the song. My memory is getting bad I guess ;-)

It is unbelievable, but Bryan Ferry Always pulls out the best of his supporting musicians. That´s what makes him a master - timeless songs, great lyrics, perfect arrangements and his leadership as a bandleader. Genius!
Sounding as good as ever - a true songsmith. I never knew Bryan covered Buckley's song, its a song that many cannot do justice to - but no worries here!!! EPIC AND AWESOME spring to mind!
As hauntingly beautiful as his voice is what defines the man to me is his timeless grace - walk out without fanfare and sing this unbelieveably moving song and without a word takes a brief bow and quietyly respectfully leaves
I met Ferry in 2011, a very humble, polite and shy man. He bowed when he shook my hand - the only person I have ever met who has done so. He clearly entered into the spirit here, understanding the importance of the event and the references to the Titanic and acted accordingly.
How can I still be in love with him after a lifetime of worshipping him, it just tears my heart into tiny pieces, and I met him once, I was dumbstruck! For once in my life, unable to speak..
I'm here because looking through the different versions of this song, I remembered how enchanting beautifully Bryan perform John & Mary and hoped he'd have performed this too as I could hear his voice singing it in my head.
Brian Ferry made music history with his own creations, but he also has Midas' touch: others' good songs, become much better when arranged by his skill.
This is the first time I'm hearing this song & never heard anything about it. Just happened upon it here & I'm sure glad. It's one of those songs that gives you goosebumps from touching you deep inside.
Chris Prouty Yes I agree. I played this song by Mortal Coil's version many times over. It reminded me of my partner Jocelyn Avanzado, who left too early from cancer. We were together for 10 years. She's been gone for over 3 yrs now. I have since married, but I haven't forgotten her.
We never forget or stop feeling the pain of the loss of someone we've loved dearly. I am truly sorry for your loss Max, but am so glad that you have continues to live. I'm sure that your Jocelyn wanted you to continue with happiness.
Bryan Ferry wird am 26.9.2023, 78 Jahre alt. Er hat 1970 ROXY MUSIC mit Phil Manzanera, Andy Mckay, Bryan Eno und Paul Tomson gegründet. Ein ganz großer Musiker...
His style of singing is different these days, but I can't tell if it's him doing that voluntarily or his voice has changed enough (at age 66, after years of smoking) to make it involuntary. I listen to the recent Roxy Music clips on YT and wonder whether he can still hit the notes/volume or whether the backup singers are carrying him. Am hoping for the former. Just glad to have seen him twice solo followed by the RM reunion tour of '01...
Every time I hear this song and this live version and have goose pumps. Amazing interpretation and I wish the guitar solo was a bit lower in volume, as it sometimes it superimposed Bryan's voice. Apart from that, fantastic.

Odd. Of all the many special qualities of this beautiful heartfelt performance, what captured my ear was the indescribable tone of that gorgeous Les Paul (model ?) & the guitarists amazing virtuosity. He added something "special" to this primarily orchestral masterpiece. Does anyone know of who he is and what other recordings groups & or solo to hear more of him.
i was alseep one afternoon with the tv on.i am a big ferry fan but had never heard this before.i will always remember it woke it me up in wonder.........
I saw a longer version of this song, and a longer guitar solo by Oliver Thompson. Thought by Jools Holland. Can't find it anymore unfortunatly. Wonderfull sound.
This man is a genius, I have enjoyed and appreciated his works for nearly 50 years
It is as elegant and sensual as only a Bryan Ferry can be.

Beautiful version .This is one of my favourite songs ever. I think if Elvis was still here he would have recorded it.
Still awesome....
Yes, truly a Master at work. Not to mention the orchestra, the singers and the arrangement. It is meaningless to discuss which version is the best.

Hates kids though, self admittedly.

Bryan Ferry is a class act.
The classiest.
In my opinion, the best cover of the Tim Buckley Classic!
I prefer Sinéad O'Connor's version.
I think George Michael’s is the BEST!

I have it since one year, love him so much and listen to his songs nearly every day. ❤🫦

Followed ferry and Roxy since I was 16 from the start of Virginia plain he still astounding me!
Bryan Ferry does it again! He has the same passion in this video as he did in Jealous Guy!
Beautiful song. I've never heard it before. Bryan is always such a natural on the stage. You can tell he'd rather be there than anywhere else. His joy of performance is undeniable.
A Tim Buckley song but try the version by This Mortal Coil.
