If you want a detailed tank model you're best just getting one of the 1/76nd Airfix kits (or a slightly out of scale 1/72nd). The existing tank would be better if it had a proper coat of paint and not just plastic colour.

That tank looks very much like a British Centaur, with the close support howitzer. The short gun barrel is typical of the weapon, and has a large counterweight to balance the gun, which has a very heavy breech. I've made many Cromwell/Centaur (same basic bodies, but different powerplants) tank models.
The turret was usually swung round for transport.
If it really annoys you, Sam, I have a really nice diecast Cromwell/Centaur you can have, that will really put the weight up.

Yeah, definitely not a Comet. The difference between a Cromwell and a Centaur is largely down to the engine and some details that I’m not an expert on. I can say, though, as a wargamer that I’d not pay more than a fiver for that tank model.

    • @gimbrol

That does seem to be a centaur, I own model tanks and honestly, those tracks and that plastic-finish makes me real mad. Especially considering how in real life, tracks were rather loose-fitting, but those are real tight. I really do prefer the Oxford rail Sherman, even despite it's lack of regiment markings.

Call it an A27L Cruiser Mk.VII Centaur IV CS (Close Support); apparently just over 100 of them were made and the type served from D-Day to VE-Day. Also seems that which engine was used in which hull at least in part determined whether AFV was called Cromwell or Centaur. Looks like that except for special versions such as this close support type, the Centaur tanks were stuck with staying home for training. As for this specific model of one, there is one over on the RMweb forum in an August 2023 post which looks quite nice after a bit of paint and weathering.

the jacks as you called those in the detail pack.
are in fact a part of the lash down system.
you use chains to lash the tank or lorry, tractor down on the waggon.
its used on train ferrys to secure the waggons as well.
nice waggon from bachmann but the tank is cheap and nasty by design.

No! They're Jacks that go under the buffer beam if you remove the NEM coupler. In real life, they are screwed down with packing against the rail head to prevent the wagon tipping or see-sawing during loading/unloading.

You are correct Sam, that's either one of the Cromwell CS variants (close support variant with a howitzer) or Centaur Mk.IV (very similar related tank). The price does seem high for the quality of the tank, the tank looks very toy-like and not suitable for this model. They should've included a higher quality tank with more detail. I will say though I really like that magnet system for attaching the tank to the car. That's a great way to add more "playability", it's much easier to remove for unloading and displaying the tank separately than having the tank be screwed or clipped on. It's also more realistic because there's no screw holes and posts or clips sticking out of either model.

Bought the war flat with Cromwell a few years ago on E bay for £39.99. Like you, I was very disappointed in the Cromwell, so much that I repainted it to stop the light shining through the plastic!
You can buy the warflat without the Cromwell, which is what I did for the other 6. Found some clearance airfix Cromwell’s and Sherman’s, already made and painted, put magnets on the bottom and looks 10x better!

Hi Sam, I can understand the lightness of the tank. if you are going to pull 10+ of these wagons you do not want to overload the loco with added weight. As for the build quality of the tank. Not so great. But with a little bit of a repaint you get a reasonable version of a Cromwell. In comparison the 1/76 Airfix Cromwell tank kit costs between £13.00 to £15.00 depending where you look. So it depends on whether you really want to have to build numerous tank kits or just do a quick paint job. As mentioned earlier Oxford do make a Sherman and a Churchill for about the same price as the Airfix kits. But this is all extra expense when a little bit of painting would do. Unless you want Bachmann to sell the wagon without the tank. I cannot see Bachmann dropping the price by £15.00. Can you?.

I have 18 of these, for different loads and kits I've made. The Cromwell tank ISN'T that bad, but the price is. I've only bought these around the £30 mark, anymore and it's too steep. The warflat itself I think is a nice model and I'm very happy with them. I agree with the lack of instructions as if you don't know about the jacks, then it's not clear at all. It's worth doing research into Warflats as they are very interesting with the way they were loaded

If you want a decent Cromwell tank Airfix to one in the correct scale for 12 quid or a Churchill Mk VII for seven quid or maybe you can pick one up at a discount from your local super-market. Only one thing you'll have to assemble and paint it, but at least you'll have a decent tank. Actually Airfix are still producing quite a few military models so you could build up quite an interesting wat train.

@@Deuce_and_a_half It's poor reputation is quite overstated, It was a solid design let down by situation. The cooling system was actually quite good despite what a certain museum wants people to believe. There is a test report that states that in 2800 miles the cooling system only had one minor fault. The actual issue of the vehicle was that many parts were designed to be made of aluminium but due to the war situation they were forced to use steel etc as the RAF hoarded all the aluminium, this combined with the fact that it was designed to be of welded construction initially but was then forced to adopt a riveted internal skeleton design meant it was heavier than intended which overstressed the engine leading to more heat than the cooling system could handle. This was only really an issue for North Africa which is why only two were ever sent for testing. By the time the fight returned to mainland Europe the Covenanter was rather outdated so it didn't see action there either.
It's use as a training tank was invaluable at the time as it meant that newer designs could go straight to combat. Covenanters were also used extensively to test new ideas due to their plentiful availability.
It may not have had an extensive combat history but it was still a very important and useful vehicle.
The Covenanter is also quite heavily related to the railways, it was designed and built by LMS and was used in a major morale/deception campaign where large amounts of them were shipped around the country by rail, uncovered and during the day. This led to a morale boost in the public and hid the actual numbers and movements of the main tank forces as they were mainly moved at night and covered.

      @Deuce_and_a_half 2 місяці тому

@@STHV_ that’s interesting to know, thanks for the info. But still I’d tend to agree with the “certain museum people” ;) that putting the radiator on the front of the tank right where it’s going to get shot is a bad idea.
And probably piping the coolant from the radiator on the front to the back where the engine was wasn’t the smartest of design choices either.
Also even if it was due to material shortages the end result ended up poorer than the design on paper. At the end of the day the ‘real’ tank was still bad, no matter how good it may have been on paper.
Much like the T-34 that was great on paper, but ended up a death trap when actually produced. Due to stuff like material shortages like the Covenanter, although not just those, a lot more went wrong with the T-34’s production.
I think we still need more popular designs available in ‘ready to run’ form as it were as wagon loads before moving on to the more obscure. If you want the most popular and well known British tank of the era, the Firefly, you have to resort to a kit, which I’m not good at unfortunately. Also the only Churchill OO scale models available are from Oxford Rail, which aren’t particularly good looking and don’t come in the out of the factory type look that would make sense for a wagon load.

I really wanted one of these all the way back when they were first released, but for the original price I knew it was a rip-off. Even now for £35 I still don't think it's worth it, and it's certainly not feasible to make a rake out of them. I really hope another manufacturer remakes these with modern couplings like the Oxford rail Warwells and a decent tank load, possibly some mark of Churchill. It's a shame, we really don't get many war related items of rolling stock and this one ended up being so bad.

    • @CarlosSempereChen
      @CarlosSempereChen 2 місяці тому +3

At some point before D-Day (i.e. I'm not sure about Italy), American and British vehicles adopted the use of a circled star on a horizontal surface as an aerial recognition symbol, so Allied planes wouldn't attack them. On tanks that usually meant the engine deck.

  • @SteelHand071

    • @frostedbutts4340

The star was used as a general Allied marking during the invasion.
Since the Luftwaffe gave up, it was more important to identify friendly units from the air.

The tank could easily be improved. Presumably easy to disassemble? If so, then I'd take it apart, sand the poor joints and glue overspill, and prime it properly before repainting. The barrel could be removed and replaced with brass rod.

Aside from the rubbish tank, what I find inappropriate is the absence of any system to secure said tank(s) in position. Looking through old photos of WWII tank transporters, in all cases I see some method of securing the tanks, whether it be chains or chains and blocks. For the money I'd expect a decent tank AND reproduction of a plausible anchoring system onto the flat bed.

WITH BUFFERS! Four and six axle flats... with so many markings, I always wondered what WD stood for. That was 1987. That tank doesn't look American, closest is a British Comet Class...

I’m guessing the American star on a British Tank was to stop the American airforce from bombing them by mistake as the Americans were and still are a bit too giddy with their ordinance and blue on blue incidents being what they excel at , my best friends uncle (RIP Denis ) was lucky to survive in Korea when a yank aircraft rocketed their position despite having put out recognition panels , 00 scale tank kits are readily available if you want more detail but a basic model is ok for a wagon load in my opinion.

The little tank is perhaps the worst model of a tank ever made. Especially since they have printed an American star on the Cromwell/Centaur tank (8:50) (11:20). What were they thinking 😂
PS Sam, Please take the offer from brianartillery to send you the diecast model of a tank. After this horrible fiasco, you deserve it. And I am sure everyone would be pleased for you to get it and see it parade around the layout on the warflat wagon 👍

    • @captaincool3329

The 'American star' is completely accurate. The Western allied forces late-war standardised on white stars as recognition symbols to prevent 'friendly fire' incidents, especially from the air (the reason for this large one on the engine deck). I've built an Airfix 1/76 Cromwell, and that includes one as well.
