For me the final scene is one of the most moving in cinema history. Sublime study of human greed and human empathy. In the end Kong is perhaps the most human character in the movie....

Don't feel intimidated to review this one, I don't care how many others have discussed it - it's YOUR take I want to hear...and a beautiful job you did too! I can't count how many times I've seen this one - it truly was the father of the giant monster movies and brought the technique of stop-motion animation into the mainstream (ofc it was previously used in Lost World - though not quite as convincingly as here) And I perhaps nostalgically prefer the stop-motion to the CGI used in the 2005 remake - which doesn't even come close to the original - though Naomi Watts is always worth watching. Thanks for this one Jerome!

I was a kid in the 1950s in Los Angeles where a local TV station had a program called The Million Dollar Movie. They showed the same film every night for the whole week with extra viewings on the weekend. I saw King Kong nine times in seven days and fell in love with monsters; an obsession that has endured all these years. Thanks for reviewing what still remains my favorite movie of all time. Good job, as always.

The economy was a shambles that decade, but Hollywood was reaching glorious heights all decade long. King Kong was one of those heights. And it gave me two life-long loves: stop-motion animation and Fay Wray.

Thanks so much for reviewing the one and only original version of Kong. Truly a staggering achievement for its time, it is on my my list of 10 favorite movies of all time. People today cannot see how much a product of sheer luck it is that all of this came together so beautifully - it was quite a gamble the makers took, because NOTHING like it on this scale had ever been done before. Using a puppet mere inches tall as a central character in a feature film in 1933 was gutsy to say the least, and the result is truly miraculous. This unique blend of adventure, fairytale surrealism, science fiction, and ol' fashion Hollywood showmanship is truly the stuff that dreams are made of. Thanks for your informative, superb review of this masterpiece!

I not only remember watching it for the first time, but my grandmother telling me how scary it was for people in 1933, especially when they had to walk home in the dark. This film had a tremendous impact on monster movies, but also as you mention on stop motion. I think your comment about the humanity of Kong is very well taken. Once again great job and looking forward to next week.

I always felt sorry for poor Kong. He's kidnapped from his island and taken to another island where he's put on display like, well, a chained animal. As for beauty having killed the beast, it follows the old formula: blame the woman.

Wow! This is one of your all-time best videos. It's amazing how much detail you managed to cover in under twelve minutes. I thought I knew a lot about this film, its history and subsequent influences on later works, but your research was meticulous. I had never even heard or read of the "spider scene". :-O This 1933 original remains my favorite and the special effects still hold up nearly a century later, just as does the Empire State Building. I'd love to hear your impressions of "Mighty Joe Young". Best wishes!

Eiji Tsuburaya was also a King Kong fan and wanted to make Godzilla in stop-motion, but it was too expensive so they switched to a man-in-a-suit. And the rest is history. So he got to satisfy a dream by making the two Toho KK movies. The problem with KK is that he is mostly a one-trick pony. At least in the most famous KK movies. They all have a similar plot - even the ones that aren't direct remakes. Even KK vs. G has many of the plot elements - worshiping giant monster on Pacific Island, greedy people bring him home, takes a beautiful woman up a large building. It's been a while since I've seen this version. I apologize for saying this on your channel, but I prefer newer movies. So I like the Peter Jackson version better. My 8/9-year old self was in love with Jessica Lange, so I have a soft spot in my heart for that one too. I liked Skull Island a lot too. Don't know why you're apprehensive to do certain reviews. You've carved out your little corner of the internet and are doing just fine. Haven't seen you try to be anything other than yourself - and that's great... at least so far.
UPDATE late 2023: Just watched this again and, of course, it's great. Fay's screaming is iconic. I watched the extras and the spider pit sequence may have been lost at some point, but it's on the disc. There's also commentary and a making of which I watched most of. Fay said she picked out the blonde wig herself, so it wasn't a dye job.

This is my first comment to you, and I first wanted to say that I find your UA-cam channel a breath of delightful, intelligent fresh air. I want to thank you for all the time, thought, and care you take with each video you produce. I’ve always found your reviews thorough, insightful, and full of interesting details, in addition to being quite entertaining. That said, I think “King Kong” is one of your best efforts. Like many of the film’s fans, it is a longtime, thoroughly beloved favorite of mine. I must say, you hit every point worth making about this enormously significant classic right on the button, from its plot, cast, and production to its groundbreaking special effects (and influence on another generation’s effects artist) and epic Max Steiner score. All I can add is “Bravo!” to you for giving this film a deservedly fantastic review, splendidly executed!
I’ll quickly mention a couple of additional details that might be of interest. RKO was struggling financially at the time, on the verge of bankruptcy. The blockbuster success of “King Kong” saved the studio. As to Max Steiner’s score, it nearly didn’t happen. Studio execs were nervous about the film’s enormous cost, and when it came time for scoring, Steiner was instructed to use elements from his earlier work. Purportedly his disdainful response was, “What would you suggest I use? Little Women?” Fortunately, Merian C. Cooper told Steiner to go ahead with an original score; he would pay out of pocket for the orchestra. The rest is film history, as they say.

This was the last film I saw in a theater before the virus lockdown started last year. I'd seen it many, many times before, but a local matinee had a one-day-only for it, so I had to see it on the big screen. The next day, they shut my city down. Great film.

Thanks for the wonderful review! There's nothing else like the original KING KONG, and the remakes just don't measure up. Everything comes together for a special kind of movie magic, from the unearthly special effects of Willis O'Brien to the imaginative script and direction and the outstanding cast (especially the radiant Fay Wray, of course!). It would be easy to make the case that after all these years, KONG is still the best monster movie in the world. If you haven't read the novelization by Delos Lovelace you might want to consider it (though I doubt your to-read list needs any additions). It follows the movie pretty closely, but does emphasize Kong's dangerous side (and the fact that Ann really is scared to death of him, even if she also sympathizes with him to some extent). The novel does include the infamous spider scene...not sure I could've handled that, so maybe it's better it didn't make the final cut!

Thank you for sharing your review! Great insight about it actually being Denham's intended movie, it took me a few viewing to realize that as well. Thank you so much for the O'Brien and Harryhausen mentions. Being an artist their influence even touches me because I am a scifi and fantasy movie fan. And for me as a scifi and fantasy movie fan King Kong is without a doubt one of the greatest if not the most important movie in the genres. I am glad you mentioned the Peter Jackson version. It's not as beloved by most but I love it. I found out Fay Wray was supposed to cameo in it but heartbreakingly she died I think a week before shooting was supposed to begin. The original is still one of my favorites and I'm really glad you shared your thoughts about it.

Hi Miss weaselberry I thought I would tell you about meeting King Kong myself. I went to a Sci-Fi convention or model convention I should say called WonderFest and there I met the owner of King Kong Bob Burns. Bob owns the greatest of all the models of car his is a skeleton of steel is a beautiful carved and the most detailed hands and feet I've ever seen. His model shook the men off the log and fought with the giant tyrannosaurus Rex. He told me that his model was the best one that Peter Jackson offered him $500,000 for it and he wouldn't sell it. I'm glad that I got to meet Bob and meet King Kong a character that I have known and loved since I was 5 years old. If you ever get to go to any conventions and you haven't been you should go. I really enjoyed your critique of King Kong and it's so true everything you said about it. I think you're one of us. I love stop motion and I'm done stop motion and ended up at the Walt Disney animation studio doing animation on beauty and the beast I was a Lumiere the candlestick animator I also worked on The rescuers down under doing Bernard and Bianca the little mice. Stop motion is a wonderful form of therapy. I let it go with that I enjoy all of your critiques very much.

I'm currently ironing out details for my next project and still on the fence on deciding on stop motion or another route for animation. Thank you for an enjoyable review of the great, original KING KONG. This is simply a brilliant film on so many levels. Several subtexts at work here. The autobiographical aspects are often overlooked, and they blend seamlessly with the fantasy. Something the remakes missed was the duality of the "beauty and the beast" theme; Jack Driscoll and Ann Darrow, and Ann Darrow and Kong. In the first instance, beast-like Driscoll transforms into Ann's Prince Charming, while in the second Kong remains just a beast to Ann but it's the audience who comes to sympathize with him. This dichotomy was ruined in the remakes by having the girl sympathize with Kong, in effect, giving her two 'Prince Charmings'. It's true that screenwriter Ruth Rose's contribution to KONG's timelessness isn't cited enough.

As any number of Alain Delon's characters might say " this review is Le Magnifique" or if Carl Denham happened to see it he'd surely say "beauty really killed it with this beast review lol". So so good, and I'm not saying that because I happen to have a soft spot for King Kong, you are so very good at this, the detail, what you point out and why along with your choice of images, always so interesting and entertaining, I really believe you stand up against anybody doing these filmed reviews. Over four thousand subs now with more to come and so many commenters, amazing and deserved, it took me over a year watching before I built up the nerve to comment and I'm sure there's so many viewers in the same boat. I do love King Kong, how the story involves the making of a Monster movie as well as the setting and time period, a lot of viewers seemed to dislike the opening of the Peter Jackson remake because it was taking too long to leave New York City, i on the other hand enjoyed every long second of the detail and recreation of 1930's New York, the original Kong is still my favourite/favorite:) of the Kong films though, stop motion is so fascinating, I'd also like to try it but I'm sure you'd need unrelenting patience. I once visited the Empire State Building and beat my chest like Kong when I got to the observatory to honour the film lol, embarrassing story- I had to ask three doormen if their building was the Empire State Building before I found it, they all chuckled, I'm sure they were thinking, how can you not know where it is, it's the Empire State Building!, all buildings on that street are HUGE! when you look directly up its hard to tell, one giant wall of brick with no sight of the top looks just like the next, well that's my defence lol, I feel like it maybe my destiny to visit somewhere like the Grand Canyon one day and walk up to a park ranger standing next to it and ask, " excuse me, do you know where I can find the Grand Canyon? lol. I've gone on again, I need to get out of the view, like and comment lake and get back in the view and like boat lol. ~ Thank you Ms Weiselberry ~

Thank you!! And I'm glad you got over your nervousness about commenting, as you always make me chuckle. :) I bet you're not the only one that's imitated Kong on the observation deck, and I *know* you're not the only one who's had trouble finding the Empire State Building. My brother went to check it out once with a friend and they didn't realize they were in the Chrysler Building instead until a security guard asked them what they were doing wandering around the halls. :D The Grand Canyon might be a little harder to miss--but make sure you don't fall in!

I saw this one on TV when I was a kid, but saw the 76' remake in the theater before the 33' version. I thought the 76' was a great movie as a kid. Now I can be more objective and say the original is much better. I have not seen the Peter Jackson one yet. I will see it someday. I did see the 1986 King Kong Lives which was stupid; entertaining at times, but stupid. I do like Kong: Skull Island. I know it is not a masterpiece, but I found it good. Another outstanding review. Classic, classic monster film. Luckily I got to see a clean 35 mm print on the big screen ages ago and that was a blast. Son of Kong is okay: obviously cobbled together quickly to cash in on this one's success. Apparently the same armature used for Kong was redressed for "Son". Still, although nowhere near the original, I'd say it's worth a look. Once again, great review!

You would probably enjoy the 1976 King Kong as well. I don't really see as much reverence for the '76 remake as I do the 2005 remake, but I always found the '76 remake to have great atmosphere, and a superb score. Another thing the '76 remake brought into the Kong lore, that was carried over into the 2005 Kong, was the idea of a 'love story' between the beauty and the beast. Where she ends up genuinely caring about Kong. This wasn't really the case in the original 1933 film.

Very good job. There are so many directions one can go when discussing this film, but sticking to the on-screen narrative is a good choice. Kong is a true masterpiece but I love asking the question, if you build a giant barrier to keep Kong out, why build a giant gate for him to come through? And if he can climb the Empire State, why can't he climb the barrier?

Great review of an iconic and classic movie, you handled it well. I love this movie and own it along with most of the other Kong movies, but this one is my favorite. The story behind it creation and it's creators is just as interesting and exciting as the film. Basically King Kong was the Jurassic park of its day and took a year to produce, which was unheard of at that time when they churning out a movie every six weeks.
As far as being intimidated or having trepidation to review this movie I can definitely sympathize. I'm in the process of starting my own review series, mostly horror movies, especially from the 80s and while I have no trouble envisioning how to do stand alone films the big iconic franchises have me stumped on how I should handle them.

Thanks! Hey, good luck on your reviews! I wish I had some advice to share, but I feel like I'm still trying to figure it out myself. :) Certainly the more well-known something is, the more intimidating the idea of offering your own take on it. But if you choose a format that's comfortable for you and manageable for your viewer (whether that means delving into the franchise in one big video, keeping it to a light overview, or breaking it up into individual films) and give it your best effort, I'm sure people will be receptive.

What did you think of the 2005 version?

  • @robertrodriguez7087

Alright, King Kong! Thanks for caving into the pressure, it was a great review! *Mighty Joe Young* is great too. I'd recommend *The Mighty Peking Man,* but I honestly doubt you'd be into it. It's a very goofy Asian Kong ripoff that tries to play up sex appeal with a scantily clad jungle girl. A lot of fun and very entertaining, but probably not your thing.
I've followed developments with the lost-spider-pit-scene over the years, and while little details have come to light, it remains ambiguous as to whether it was cut after it was shot, or was actually not shot at all. There's evidence for both sides, and it doesn't help that Cooper was such a showman that you can never tell what he was telling the truth about. One of the spiders did end up in the movie *The Black Scorpion,* a middling '50s scifi movie with some cool stop motion effects supervised by O'Brien.

I think there are technically 10 "Kong" movies. Yes 10. "Mighty Joe Young" is basically a light-hearted remake, often sold along with the original King Kong and Son of Kong as part of a trilogy. Unfortunately many are subpar. Here are my rakings/reviews.
King Kong (1933). 10/10. Classic. One of the best movies of all time. A technical and cinematic masterpiece.
Song of Kong (1933). 6/10. A Worthy successor and quite good given how quickly they made it but fails to reach similar heights as the original.
Mighty Joe Young (1949). 8/10. When he saves that baby at the end? Oh man ... waterworks.
King Kong vs Godzilla (1962). 7/10. Goofy but lots of fun. Like Universal's "Frankenstein vs. The Wolfman" this was proto-cinematic universe.
King Kong Escapes (1967). 5/10. Goofy kaiju meter is off the charts but it has its charms.
King Kong (1976). 6/10. Cheaply made 70s cash in blockbuster but again has a certain charm. Great cast including a young Jessica Lange,oh my.
King Kong Lives (1986). 3/10. Soooo bad without being "so bad it's good."
Might Joe Young (1998). 5/10. Very middling and ultimately forgettable remake.
King Kong (2005). 7/10. Loving tribute with great scenes but too long and some miscasting. Should be cut much shorter in be in black 'n white.
Kong: Skull Island (2017). 7/10. Serviceable but bloated. It often forgets the audience knows it's a B-movie. Actually works better in black 'n white as well IMO.

Not only was this the Jurassic Park of its day, I will watch it all over again before I take another look at any of the Jurassic movies. It's interesting that people tend to forget about the dinosaurs, because so far as I can see this is a movie aimed at a little boy, and that little boy wants to see a giant gorilla wrestle a tyrannosaurus, dagnabbit. The one thing I like best about the Peter Jackson project is the made-for-TV special trying to give a kinda-sorta scientific history of Skull Island, that I did appreciate -- but apart from that, for me it's all about the original. Fay Wray is the enduring standard of all scream queens to date. Trivia: there's a 1980 movie I like called The Stunt Man starring Peter O'Toole and Steve Railsback. O'Toole is a slightly mad director with a god complex and when one stunt man of his dies he hires Railsback, a runaway outlaw, as his next. O'Toole takes Railsback under his wing, confessing to him his delight in movie magic, pointing out the fact that the great King Kong was only three foot six. In the movie's climax Railsback survives a truly death-defying stunt and tells O'Toole his joy, among other things, at earning a thousand dollars. O'Toole then claims that he never promised a full thousand dollars and a long loud argument ensues. O'Toole taunts Railsback with the question :"How tall was King Kong?" and Railsback screams back "Three foot six, and that's what you're gonna be if you don't pay my thousand dollars!" That to me is one mark of a great movie, that in a completely unrelated movie half a century later it can still inspire a good line. And owl be seeing you.

Such a magical piece of film making. The creativity and imagination on show is fantastic, especially the look and atmosphere created for the island and the action that takes place there as well. I know the remakes have their fans, but for me the original stands head and shoulders above them and is by far the best.

Even though this movie has been talked about, reviewed and of course essayed to death, it is ALWAYS GREAT (emphasizing not yelling) to HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS on this movie or any movie. I hope you do the King Kong 1976 review unless you did already. I always have a soft spot for this one from John Barry's music to Charles Grodine's overacting. You should see his reaction after he sips a glass of lemonade in the beginning. You would think he just drank the most refreshing drink ever. The beginning of King Kong 1976 is the best part of the movie until Kong gets captured. Its still a good movie and after hearing your review on this Kong, I should rewatch the original which I haven't seen in years. Again, ty for your review.

The 1976 version was awful and best forgotten, however the Peter Jackson version of 2005 was excellent except it took far too long to get to Skull Island. Interesting to note that in all three we were never shown how they got Kong on the boat and off again at New York and all the way to the theatre.

I very much enjoyed your review of KING KONG, one of your best and the clips were perfect. I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. This film inspired me to get into animation and I did a short stop motion test on 8mm of a clay dinosaur I made and was amazed when I got the film back and saw it move. I loved KONG so much I made a spoof of it in 1968 in junior collage. KRING KRONG.Sorry if the title sounds a bit racist, but I just thought it sounded funny. I used my friends for the cast, and animated Krong and all the dinosaurs myself. Very lame animation, I admit, but it was quite a task to do the entire film. It's very silly, but I think it's pretty funny. Years later I added music and sound effects and put it up on youtube. Have you ever watched the movie "Transylvania Twist"? It's a silly chees-fest. Similar to Young Frankenstein, Dracula Dead and Loving It. It also has cameo spoofs of Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, pinhead, and even has the actor from Phantasm parody his role. You gotta love the mobs enthusiasm at wanting to storm the castle. Sadly there's only like 1 review of the movie here on UA-cam, and they didn't like silly stuff. The movie is on UA-cam, but not sure if its officail or not, but I did mention it to the director. The DVD usually costs about $60, and was rated as both rated PG/PG13. I should mention that it does have a double intro similar to Monty Pyton's "The Meaning of Life".
