    Enjoy your honest opinion about the roses. Very helpful to those wanting to buy roses, since they do get expensive. And most articles, I find, do not tell the whole story about a rose they way you do.
    I have Gertrude in a pot and she doesn't like it, and she wants to climb on rather sad limbs (needs more sun). Will plant in ground next year by the deck - if it ever gets built.

      Hi and thanks for the comment. I have 4 or 5 Gertrude Jekyll and my pennies worth is it is slow to grow on weak or fragile stems. I cut mine back pretty hard to encourage the stronger (and thicker) growth lower down. I think on all of mine except one I had like 6 or 7 stems coming up from the bottom all weak. I cut them back to 3 or 4 pretty much like starting again. But I have seen good growth since then. The problem you have now is winter is approaching. Good luck with the decking :)

      @@Jay_Jay yes I cut them all back. Hope it works. Winter is too cold in pot (0ntario, Canada) so I'll put it in the garage. Thanks for the advice.

    Haha I like your intro, I love the LA it's on my wish list, yes totally agree all the stages are really pretty your wife has good taste 👍 FC is very pretty, love cutting experiments I'm convinced all gardeners are really nerdy at heart, what you and other YTs have shown me viewers is how many roses you can grow and keep in pots, I never realised this before 👍🌸🌷🌸

      Last season I think was a vintage year for my Gertrude’s. I lost count of the amount of flushes they gave out and with zero black spot. This year so far has been much wetter and the blackspot has returned but still a dazzling display I can see is coming with multiple buds and we know the fragrance. One opened yesterday my 4th to flower. :)

      Hi naffy. Your rose will be beast I’m sure. I have no doubt it will shoot up. I forgot to say, on mine it seems to prefer growing upwards. My upward growing canes seem to happily shoot out side lateral canes where as my horizontal growing ones don’t (if that makes sense). But mine is starved of sunlight so maybe doesn’t perform as it should. You too Have a great weekend.

    Glad to see I'm not the only one disappointed in "Iceberg". Years ago I planted it where I lived in zone 5 (central NY) and was plagued with black spot, and few blooms with weak stems. Two years ago I planted 2 more of them at my son's home in Maryland zone 7, (one was a climber) in 2 different areas. I thought they would do well like the other roses that I planted there. However, they're barely alive, produce one rose each per year, and still get black spot. I'll never buy them again. Your other roses are beautiful. I love the strong stems on Queen of Sweden and your video has convinced me that it would be a good choice. Thank you!

    My favorite so far of the David Austin's is Wollerton Old Hall. It's a beautiful cream colored rose. It has handled 20 below Ferinhit weather, 100 degree weather, hail, 100 mile per hour wind, 2 foot of snow, and drought conditions. The flowers last a long time if the bugs don't get them, they smell good, and very romantic and lovely. The Gertrude rose and Lark Ascending are very pretty.

    Hello Jay Jay I’m an old gardener so quite good ,a friend gave me A Shropshire Lad that I grow round a post and as I haven’t got room in the ground for a Rose the other side I decided to put one in a pot .so I bought Margaret Merril and it hasn’t done too well ,very resistant too flower and has black spot ,looking at your Rose they seem to be in small pots and doing great mine is in a ginormous pot so is that what I’ve done wrong ? I bought as a plant from D A nursery .What soil do you use ? All help appreciated . Lovely back garden ,Lots more room for more roses when it’s not needed for football 🤣🤣🤣🤣bye

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Eileen. Well first of all I’m definitely no Rose expert and I have no experience with the Margaret Merrill Rose. But what I will say is even though DA state that your rose is a repeat flowerer, by definition that only means it flowers more than once. (Possibly once in June and once in October). It doesn’t mean it’s a constant flowerer giving you roses throughout the year. DA could be clearer on this I think. Not knowing your rose I don’t know if this is the case with your rose. Have you fed it at all? DA state to feed twice a year. In April time and again after first flowering. But I think many people feed more often than this. But I think twice a year needs to be the minimum. With regards to black spot I think it’s easy to take or accept blame for lack of Rose care but I personally believe genetics or location of the Rose are the biggest cause. So long as the rose is getting adequate amounts of sunlight water and air circulating around the rose. I don’t think a pot can be too big personally. But I do notice that your rose only grows to 2ft big?If so that is a small rose and This might look unusual. But I don’t think it will effect the rose performance. If the rose is buried well without rocking about, has a decent amount of direct sunlight, receives correct amount of water it should flourish. From my experience lack of flowering has come down to two things. One occasion of Over feeding, and others the genetics of the rose itself. Lastly have you given your rose time? How old is it? Most of mine are very young.

      @@Jay_Jay hey thanks for your reply ,the Rose I about 5yrs old and it defoliates like mad ,I’m going to give it another year ,I’ll dig in some Rose soil at top and feed the hell out of it ,after that if no better it’s for the CHOP or maybe find a spot in the garden 🤷

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  3 роки тому +1

      @@eileentarrant9876 5 years old I’d be thinking of getting rid out of that pot. Especially if it’s taking up a very large and valuable pot and only grows to 2ft. Im still currently using westlands rose planting and potting mix but is not eco friendly at all. I will be switching over to something else when I run out. 5 years old the roots should be well established and if you can find a small spot for it in the ground I’d move it in January time when it’s dormant. It looks a fantastic rose. You should do a video :)

    Hello Jay, I’m in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. I just planted several David Austin Roses and they have taken off quickly in a week. Would you be so kind as to let me know how you deal with Blackspot on your roses. 🇺🇸😊

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Beverley, i wish i could say I feed them well enough and nurture them good enough to avoid black spot but that simply isn’t the case. Not for me and I personally don’t think for anyone. A coupe of years ago I did try a flat teaspoon full of bicarbonate of soda into a lite of water and well mixed up. Then add a tiny squirt of eco washing up liquid and give all that a very good stir. This seemed to work ok. The roses you see BS on remove those leaves, and then give those bushes a spray from top to bottom. But remember if it’s not stirred well enough you’ll burn new growth on the rose bushes so it really does need a good stir to even out the mix in the bottle equally. I don’t really have many BS Roses know as I’ve swapped most of them out for healthier ones. Which 5 roses have you ordered ? I’d love to know. ;)

      @@beverlyhughes552 excellent. I will be very surprised if you get any black spot on any of those roses :)
      Perhaps The Gertrude Jekyll but the scent will be worth it. :) The actual BS for me anyway wasn’t the problem but to see a rose bush mainly stripped of leaves when they fall in the summer looks worse. But I honestly think your roses you have chosen very well indeed.

      @@Tillybird I would suggest in the ground as they can grow pretty big. But what I will say is that after 3 summers the rootball on mine was surprisingly small. Potted she was planted in rose compost and her rootball after that time was nowhere near rootbound. So it’s not impossible if you’d rather go the potted route but it would have to be a large pot.

    I'm now getting into roses and doing a lot of research roses thrive on full sun with less wet and mildew. If the tree was there why would you put a rose where it wouldn't flower. The black spots on the roses doesn't look healthy at all.
