- After almost a year of use this review explains both the good and the not-so-good aspects of the Tilta Nucleus Nano follow focus system and issues you may experience.
I've also added some tips on simple modifications you can make to get the most out of the device. Including increasing the torque output.
Considering the price a wireless follow focus kit was about 5 years ago, this thing is mind-blowingly cheap!
Good tip about the locking lever!!
Excellent video and workarounds.
Thanks Ron, glad you liked it and found it useful.
Thanks, i havent heard it has dimmed lights on the display. Good to know.
One thing I wish they had included is presets. If you regularly use multiple lenses, you have to recalibrate each time. Even worse if you have lenses without hard stops because then you have to do it manually.
Yes I agree presets would definitely make set up a lot quicker.
One tip I have found is that my wheel can be powered by micro USB, a few reviews seem to state this isnt possible but somehow it works fine for me.
I wonder if it's down to the micro USB cable and/or powerbank that's used. There used to be issues years back where if USB devices didn't receive the correct signal on the data line they would not send or receive power. Good tip that it can at least be possible
thanks, helpful
great video thank you
Thanks glad you liked it.
Nice review brother
Thank you
very useful! thanks a lot!
Thanks you’re welcome.
Good review 👍🏻
Hello! thanks you so much for the hacks! specially the cable for powering! Do you know if that cable is for sale? it is micro usb to... what? I have the smallHD monitor and want to do the same! My other question is Im trying to look for a way to power the motor without any external power source, do you know if that is posible? I have the Panasonic GH5, it has a usbc port, if I get a micro usb to a usbC cable will this work to power the motor? Thanks!!!
Hi sorry for the delay in answering I had to go check. So Tilta do sell a cable (tilta.com/shop/micro-usb-to-90-degree-2-1mm-dc-motor-power-cable/) BUT you would need to check the size of the end that goes into the smallHD monitor as there are several diameters. (Also check the polarity is correct !!!!) I'm not sure if the GH5 will output power from the USB-C. Looking on line it appears that is DOESN'T charge from the USB-C port which would suggest that the power lines are not connected thru to the battery. If it does supply power then you would need to check that it can provide the power drawn by the motor and of course it would still then be limited to 5V which would give you the lower torque. If you want to make the cable yourself then it shouldn't be difficult to get a cable / socket to fit the smallHD and for the micro USB end just any old car cigarette to micro USB will do.
Hi, have you evere use the "Rec" button to start recording? I'm trying to do it, but even with Tilta's cable it just doesn't work on the GH5.
Andrea Crobu sorry I haven’t tried that as I use Canon 80D and I don’t recall it being supported. Also I wasn’t using a USB cable between the camera and Tilta. I haven’t tried with my new EOS R yet.
Hello, I see that you made 2 red "marks" on the white disk of the Nano controller. Can the Nucleus Nano also be used like a regular follow focus ( each mark correspond with a distance on the lens and by turning the knob it is possible to go repeatedly from one distance to the other one ) ? Have a good day.
Hi, Yes I thought you could do this but I just double checked to make sure. The action is linear so whilst the speed you turn the controller will affect the speed the focus pulls it will stop at the same point along the way. I'm not sure if PERMANENT marks would always align with the same focus distances, it would depend on the setup accurately finding exactly the same end points which it probably would but I haven't tested this. You could certainly mark a number of focus points and then rack from 1 to 2 to 3 etc. It's worth noting that I suspect it would be more accurate with a lens that requires more focus ring movement.
@@DTSquared Thank you very much for your answer.
Does N have any automation features allowing for focus control between two points without using the wheel?
Unfortunately none that I've found. You can set the two focus points but then it's up to the user to manually turn the wheel. I guess if they added that feature then they would also have to add a method to set the speed. Also since the wheel has hard stops they would typically have to also drive the wheel so that the wheel position matches the focus point. So a lot of extra complexity for an entry level price point. Still I agree with you that it would be a really nice feature to have.
Great video thanks! Is this the best way to get wireless Zoom control? I am currently building a wireless rig for my pocket 6k. The focus is easily done, i will buy a used wireless ff system (any brand would do at this point for me), but i don't know how to solve the zoom issue. your solution looks great, Or should i just take off the handle and go for a cheap manual follow focus?
I will film a festival for 2 days straight. I will film on a ifootage mono pod with a monfrotte fluid head, i want to clamp the focus wheel on the grip of the fluid head and prolly take off the additional handle on the left hand site of the cage and use a manual ff for zoom i guess.. good plan or not?
Appreciate your time.
Thanks glad you liked it. I haven't tried but I'd be very doubtful of using the Nano to control your zoom. The torque required to drive the zoom ring is usually a lot greater and I doubt, even with the battery trick if you would get the required torque. Tilta do a higher spec version which may be sufficiently powerful but I couldn't guarantee. I'm not sure what lense mount you are using on the Pocket 6K but if it's Canon then there are some canon lenses that work with an optional zoom drive. I haven't tried one but I know my EFS 18-135 has the connector points for the "Canon PZ-E1 Power Zoom" looking online this is only about £120 so if you're using Canon glass then could be a better option.
@@DTSquared Great Tip! Thank you!
A question: I use old Zeiss Contax lenses, the focusing rings have a greater resistance than the new ones. Can this move them?
Hard to say without testing but if there is significant resistance then I’d recommend trying the DIY cable (as shown in film) to provide the max voltage as it really does make a big difference. Good luck
yes. Every once and a while mine will lock up on me when calibrating, but I just wiggle things around and retry it till it works.
I find the screen on my controller isn’t just dim-it’s impossible to see anything! Any tips?
same here the controller works perfectly pairs with motor but for some reason my screen is literally dim i checked it in a completely dark room with magnifiying glass it seems to show the settings on it but looks like it broken or brightness is on low if there is a setting like that ? If you find the solution could you please let me know its really frustrating to not being able to use it. Do you know if there is any brightness setting that you may also changed or ? I also accidentaly tried to power the controller from its usb socket but it turns it it was an output not a n input so im hoping that is not the reason my screen is behaving that way if i borke it or smthng. Let me know if you solved it thxx
Hi sorry for the delay. The screen on my controller was never that dim, I suspect that you may have an issue with your unit so may be wise to contact supplier.
how much time last each battery?
what power bank is that at 1:40
It’s the
Anker PowerCore+ mini (3350mAh) but any generic USB power bank would do. I went for that one because it was small though in retrospect round things tend to be harder to attach to camera cages.
@@DTSquared that’s exactly what i’m looking for tho cause u can attach it to rod and have it right next to the motor but it looks like they don’t make it anymore. will probably have to make my own cable like you did for best solution thanks
Good review but your audio is so low
Glad you liked it. That was a few years back, and I've changed my microphone setup since then.
Hi! Can you tell me which size tx do i need?
Hi , I'm not sure what you mean by size of TX ?
@@DTSquared the size of the torx tool, but I found it (Tx0.6) ;D
Very hacked Sir ;)
Cheers 👍
I find this unit pretty useless due to the dimness of the display. I wish I’d bought something else.
It is certainly one of its most limiting features which is a shame as a brighter LCD can't be that much more expensive.
Dont buy this product, tilta does not support the use of their products with canon professional products.
