Dave Stewart is GOD!! I like to call them psych math rock. I would go 2-1-3 as my ranking. Like FZ said : No Commercial Potential, and that is a good thing. Essential stuff for any organ/keyboard fan.
I should know these as I love Hatfield And The North and National Health (although I only acquired them relatively recently), so can't wait to dig in. Thanks, Pete, great work as always.
I'm a longtime prog fan but have been Canterbury deficient except for Bruford until recently. Now I've collected Egg and Hatfield and the North and some others. I love the multi-part epics in particular.
Egg, for me are the quintessential Canterbury progressive rock band. It might not be the most commercial of music out there but Egg score highest on the progressive bingo card (unusual time signatures, virtuosic playing, left-field lyrics, atypical (for rock) instrumentation, long or multi-part songs) in my ears. Can't argue with your ranking but, again, there's some later released archive material well worth hearing (The Metronomical Society)
These guys were so far ahead of their comteporaries, harmonically and certainly rhythmically. They made the proggiest stuff ever while prog was still defining itself
...for those who love "live albums," you may want to check out an album released in 2007 entitled "The Metronomical Society"...it's radio show appearances along with other live material from Egg. Good stuff for "completists."
When Egg split up Clive Brooks joined the Groundhogs
1. The Polite Force
2. Egg
3. The Civil Surface
Arzachel deserved a mention. Egg are an absolutely fabulous band
And Khan
Pete, thanks for these album rankings. This to me anyway obscure “ group , I wouldn’t have learned without these shows “. Thx again 👍💯
Heard a few Egg songs searching Spotify prog playlists but nothing ever grabbed me…need to revisit.
Dave Stewart was such a talented guy, had a hand in a lot of great albums including "Space Shanty" by Khan with Steve Hillage, one of my favorites.
Definitely heard few Egg songs years ago but nothing stuck…need to revisit them. Thx Pete!

I don’t know why but I can’t do horns. Flute yes, sax sometimes, strings oh yes. But I can’t do brass in progish music. Thanks Pete! Now I know.

1- The Civil Surface ( for the sublime "Enneagram")
2- The Polite Force
3 - S/T
Egg was fantastic.
1. Polite Force 2. Egg 3. The Civil Surface
The Arzachel album deserves a listen too (Egg with Steve Hillage)
Yep, the Arzachel, and Khan album, are both great.
1 The Polite Force 2 Civil Surface. I don’t own the Debut Album.
The odd time signatures on The Polite Force are off the chart.
Who?too many no name bands bye!
If you aren't willing to learn...bye!😊
I didn't get into Egg till recently, where Triumviat I gat into upon their album releases.. Egg's albums I prefer in the same order of release.
