Violet Carson, Doris speed, Pat Phoenix and Jean Alexander, they were the superb Actresses and strong characters, a force to be reckoned with, they are missed terribly, also I forgot Bet Lynch Coronation Street has not been the same without them.
The five top Queens of The Street. They were bosses of their own domain. However, nobody dared question Mrs Sharples as the undisputed head mistress of Coronation Street.
Nearly every street had an Ena, but in times of trouble they (women like Ena) would be the first to help someone, they would be someone the whole street would turn to.
Hard to believe that Ena/Vilolet has been dead fir 38 long years, even harder to believe that she was Ena for 20 years, I very much enjoyed listening to this, at the time was very scarred of Ena’s character, she will always be remembered.
This is brilliant, thank you very much for sharing it. I remember Miss Carson appearing on "Stars on Sunday" playing the piano and singing beautifully. I'm going to see if I can find the cassette tape on wich I recorded "Violet Carson": a tribute to the musician and actress who died on Boxing Day 1983 and was first broadcast: Wed 1st Feb 1984, 16:10 on BBC Radio 4 FM.
Lovely, thank you. Very occasionally, she'd sing on Coronation Street (see Christmas Eve 1969 here on UA-cam for example). When she did, the effect was stunning.
Violet travelled to Australia in the 60s . I think she disliked flying so came over via ship and had some relative downunder who drove her between cities. The crowds that greeted her were almost as large as those who had cheered The Beatles. There were so many British migrants to Australia in those days and some had returned to the UK complaining. Vi said something like 'if they could not make it here, they would never make it anywhere.;

She was fabulous, I hadn't realised she was well known before she was on the Street. Will we be remembering any of the current characters on Coronation Street in 41 years time I wonder? (Doubt it)
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this I loved the waspish comments from Ena, she was a gem on that Street😊. I would have loved to see more Still photos as the story unfolds.
My partner's friend worked with Violet Carson in the early 70's she said Violet was so lovely and kind to her, telling my partner's friend how lovely it was to work with her. My partner's friend played a character called Mrs.Parsons. it was a lovely storyline that brought to the forefront the nice kindly side to Ena. But we must remember what Violet Carson said of Ena once, "Adults maybe be frightened of her, but the children in 'Coronation street' will go over and hold Mrs.Sharples hand". A wonderful actress playing Mrs.Sharples on more than one level, and a character who had a very low key exit (as Violet hoped to return to the series), "I've just been on the phone to Mr.Foster, he said he'd be very pleased to see me".
Real characters are a gift, and much rarer these days. No "muckin about", just "straight to the point" ( or "straight t't point). Hard and clear, but warm and determined to let nobody simply fall by the wayside. 1950s Salford was my home. I miss it greatly. But you leave places in space. And they disappear in time. You can't go back in time. At least not outside your own head. 't
Whether the role wrecked her career honestly these actors need to be reasonable. She has a solid salary for 20 years never having to worry about being out of work in her elderly years.
Why did she always wear a hair net in coronation street? Was her hair falling out? Same with Hilda Odgen with the rollers and scarf. Why would they wear those things in public?
That is what some ladies of Ena Sharples generation wore to keep their nicely combed hair in place, usually you couldn't see a hairnet on someone because they were very fine and almost invisible, but Violet Carson wore 3 hair nets this was purely because it showed up on tv better by wearing three, Hilda Ogden wore curlers and a scarf tied at the front and this goes back to when ladies worked in factories, I know it seems strange, but many women in days gone by wore curlers or the very elderly ladies wore a hairnet. Ena had a best friend called Martha Longhurst, she not only wore a hairnet like Ena, but wore a flat ladies beret on top.
It's great that so many episodes featuring Ena are now here on UA-cam - she's so brilliant in every single one of them.
Wonderfully warm lady who played the part with gusto and will remain a big part of our happy memories ❤
Ena was Corrie and Corrie was Ena! Thank you Vi Carson from a Kiwi fan111

Yes they were great and will always be remembered ❤
The great old days when Corrie was dominated by matriarchs.

Great memories watching CStreet in the 1960s jeeez three life times ago. Violet, amazing actor and so very talented.
Great Actress ,great character ,also liked in her latter years when we saw Ena’s humour too,

Didn't mrs parsons be played by June brown?
@@PacyMitchEditz yes June played Mrs Parsons.
@@SimonandJojo so your partners friend is easywnders legend June brown
@@PacyMitchEditz they remained best friends for 37 years, right up to June's passing in 2022.
The storyline featuring Tony Parsons as the child prodigy was particularly heartwarming. We saw the big heart of Mrs Sharples in 1970.
Ena Sharples Was The Best In The Street And Minnie And Martha And Elsie Tanner The Best Ones To Watch Great Ones
Violet sounded quite well spoken in real life, I was expecting more of a Manchester accent
Love it, when people were real hard honest and loved chatting on street corners in corner shops and launderettes. Called a spade a spade
How on earth did she remember those long rants and the speed she recited them was impressive!
Such a brilliant actress.
What an amazing woman and actress
