You folks are so wrong about Spielberg's Minority Report. I loved it. It was a great science fiction take on Philip K. Dick's story. And, very well shot and directed. Spielberg isn't a first class filmmaker for nothing. All of you are wrong, wrong, wrong about that film, and Spielberg.

CORRECTION: BLADE RUNNER was not filmed in Tokyo. Ridley Scott toyed with the idea of filming it in Tokyo. He was obsessed with the look of the city. But it would've cost more money.
Most of the film was shot on the Warner Brothers backlot in Los Angeles. Along with a couple of pick-up shots in London.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep was NOT a novella. It was a full novel, published in hardcover.

While Spielberg is definitely overrated, he's still responsible for Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Minority Report, Munich, Catch Me if You Can, etc. That's a lot of good movies.

I enjoyed the discussion, I agree that Scanner Darkly is the most faithful adaption of a PK Dick novel, the characters, the dialog, the mind bending premises they are just so PK Dick, I haven't read that novel but I suspect it wouldn't be a favourite of mine. I think Blade Runner is an amazing film and Dick was blown away by the creation of the world, it's amazing to look at, it's really evocative. So much is delivered through image, top marks but as far as adapting Dick's story it's not so good, Deckard isn't anything like a Dick character and the replicants are kind of super heroes in the movie and to me that is wrong, not just because it is unfaithful to the book but imaginatively it turns it's back on humanity. I actually think Minority Report works better as a movie, it's not so visually breathtaking and revolutionary but for me it has more of the Dick spirit in the story, the dream parlours, the tailored advertising, the surveillance, the eye transplants, the little scanner robots all to me made it rich with Dick's ideas and yes it was also very much a Spielberg movie which is what it should be. To me it works as a movie. Total Recall is amazingly good for an Arnie movie but it does seem pretty hammy watching it now.

Minority Report was a great short story from 1956. It's so complicated, that it should have notes following it!

I loved Minority Report, it is the best PKD adaptation except for Blade Runner. I sometimes think critics will not like Spielberg just because he is "mainstream." Minority Report is an adaption of the short story, an ADAPTATION, not a replica. So it is a different story.

I like Blade Runner, but I just wished it was more like a detective story, which it isn’t. This especially threw me off with the voice over narration, which I actually also liked...in principle.
Total Recall had an awesome ending where the movie leaves the fundamental question of whether it was Real or not ambiguous and draws your attention to the ambiguity. The ending has to be “happy” because he was promised a Happy Ending in his initial Recall purchase, which is what makes the ending fundamentally ambiguous.

Can't agree with the praise for 'Blade Runner', beyond the technical aspects. It's less hollow that Scott's 'Legend', but that's not enough to keep an audience engrossed in a story. I do agree with the criticisms of 'Minority Report' 100%.

Minority Report did suffer from the lame comedy and plot holes but the ending was still good. If it ended with him going into prison it would just be a downer ending; PKD wasn't about downer endings, he's about double meaning endings. The last part of the film is all his dream while in the prison. It's mentioned that they dream in prison, and the blue tint leaves the film at that point. The ending is his fantasy, not the reality. He is still in prison, he did lose in the end.

@cinefiles The thing is, i think speilberg does devote himself to film, ok not as much as kubrick and i dont think when he directs a movie he cares about dolla signs, when he made schindlers list he refuesed to get paid, he didnt want any money from it. I think he is a talented director. I think the movies hes produced he cares more about dollar signs sure, but not his directed efforts. Now, if you look at Michael Bay, he does care about the bucks, no matter what. Speilberg atleast has talent...

Like Kubirck, whose work was appreciated much later, Dick was much more realistic about humanity's future. As we now examine our recent trends in government, socio-economics and politics -- especially identity politics; we realize that Philip's view of humanity's future was closer to the bull's eye than Roddenberry's, Asimov's or others that gained success in life at an early age. Perhaps this is because the poor are living closer to reality than others.

it was pretty clear that the events in total recal were from the memory implant. they showed the girl in his dreams being graphically created on the monitor screen as he's describing her, and she turns out looking just like it. also, in the end their eyes bug out in such an exagerated way, as to imply that this is not reality. there were other clues that i don't remember after all these years, but i remember it being somewhat obvious, just not so obvious as to just hand over the answer to you

@Sizzmaster6985 JAWS IS EXPLOAITATION FILM! I'm just sick of Spielberg not devoting himself to cinema the way Kubrick did. When Kubrick made a film, he didn't think about dollar signs, he wanted to make a quality film. Spielberg only cares about money: He's responsible for Transformers! Case closed!

Minority Report is one of Spielberg's best films. The cinefiles are upset because it didn't follow PKD's short story. I think Mr. Dick would have loved this movie, especially Samantha Morton's detonating performance. Shame on you, cinefiles.

@cinefiles Jaws is a Horror/Thriller film and Jaws, Close Encounters, ET, Indiana Jones 1-4, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me if You Can. These all seem like quality films to me. And those horrible Transformers movies are strictly Bay's fault, that's like saying the Land Before Time was only good because Lucas was involved. I don't mean any offense to you or your friends I was just listing off what you guys seem to bring up when ever you talk about spielberg

It's easy to dismiss them now, but the likes of E.T. and Close Encounters were far from guaranteed moneymakers (their titles alone would've sounded like box office poison), and they certainly weren't made for that purpose. As someone's already mentioned, he refused to be payed for Schindler's List. And Munich was hardly a box office smash either. It's one thing to dislike the man's work, but it's another to say that he's just in it for the money. What complete and utter horseshit.

Blade Runner, Though not the most entertaining film is still very interesting, great to look at & Rutger Hauer rules. Total Recall is definitely one of Arnold's best. Never saw Screamers and haven't heard good things about it (except from Mike), Minority Report was descent but went way too long. Never watched A Scanner Darkly because the animation kinda turned me off but perhaps I'll check out.

So after watching these guys reviews and other shit. Here's a list of reasons why I think they hate speilberg
    -He's mainstream
-None of his films have rape scenes
    -He suggested the PG-13 rating
-His only dark film is Jaws "Cough Schindler's List Cough
    -He's made no exploitation movies

I wish you guys would have done more research on PKD before recording this, including reading his books. I would correct you, but there are so many things wrong with this I'm just going to have to slam you for not doing your research. The only things I love as much as good film are music and Dick's writing.

Ok First I love the show keep it up. Second Blade Runner to me has always seemed slow and the ending seems weak in the fact the robot maybe learns what its like to be human.
Total Recall great premise but dumbed down and turned into a action movie.
Minority Report was not great I will give you that. Great premise but executed poorly. I think the ending is again weak. I agree with the ending.

I would just like to say that I have seen every film from Michael Bay, Uwe Boll, Brett Ratner & Roland Emmerich... None of them, I repeat, none of them ever reached the level of Abject FUCK-NESS that Waking Life did. Waking life is the most irritating, pretentious, annoying, un-thought provoking, fucked piece of shit I've ever seen in my life. Take EVERY COPY of this movie, throw them in a space shuttle and launch them into THE FUCKING SUN. Thank You Samuel, for telling the world the truth.

Scanner Darkly didn't have a pessimistic ending. The whole idea was that Bob Arctor was unwittingly coerced into getting hooked on substance D so he would get severe withdrawl and get admitted to the drug rehab centre that the cops suspected were growing the stuff. The movie ends with Arctor secreting one of the plants in his shoe so he could show it to his 'friends' (actually undercover cops) when they visit next. It's a hopeful ending.

    Love the show guys.
One comment to add to the TOTAL RECALL bit:
At 16:51 the dweeb says, ", That's a new one, Blue Sky on Mars." Based on the ending which has the blue sky on Mars result, this implies the whole thing is indeed the memory implant from Recall. As well, the other computations the techs programmed in when he went to Recall all hint at Quaid getting what he paid for. Psychotic breakdown and all.. So...the pessimistic Dick is retained in the film.
    You guys are awesome.

More Spielberg hate - at least you're consistent. I once remember Mike trying to say Spielberg didn't have much to do with Jaws being a good film, and now he's kicking Saving Pvt Ryan. He's probably going to say Schindler'sLlist was crap next. And Roger Ebert fuck#ng loves Minority Report by the way, but he doesn't know shit about films right? Lots of people - not into snobbish elitism - have, and will, really enjoy Minority Report, so it's kinda selfish to say that it's one they have to avoid.

Some comments on Total Recall.....the end shows it is all a dream. What was the name of the memory program Arnie got implanted with at Recall? That's right....adds a whole new layer don't it?! Plus, look at the director....the whole "happy" ending ain't his style. I Like your show guys, but please pay a little more attention to the films you discuss...pretentious ignorants are no fun.
