The days when tv actually had programmes worth watching and life wasn't quite as fast there was cod in the sea harder winters and some mighty flocks of pigeon would come over from a very cold continent here in east Anglia. Nice watch thanks for posting
Jack is using one of a pair of William Powell I tried to buy at auction recently. Archie inspired and instructed a lot of my generation. Pigeon shooting still my favourite by far and I’m not alone.
LOVED IT!!, nice to see Archie on film, Learned my pigeon shooting skills from his book "pigeon shooting" long time ago.. A legend, countryman like that are not around anymore.. Cheers from Holland
tears in my eyes at 59 years old...I watch this series so many times in the 80's when i was a big shooter and now living in the Philippines and and finding these bids I have memory cry and want to go back home to my home county of Cumbria ...God take me back please just one more time ..I cry again :(
After Archie’s death his wife Prue invited my mother, my young son and myself to the family home, Tower Hill, Dummer for lunch. We were regaled by many a tale about Archie’ exploits. We saw his old hat and guns. He was my shooting hero as a young man. I am sadly led to believe that Prue recently passed. She was a lovely lady who leaves behind there daughter Lucy who is a children’s author. I’d love to meet her and get some more tales of a childhood with this man who was not only a shooting legend but a hero of WW2. Archie, Prue R.I.P and thank you for the memories. ❤️
What a find, good on you for uploading. Advice from a master. Can you imagine ITV running a programme dedicated to pigeon shooting in this era? Such a shame so much has changed...
There would be a public uproar if any country sporting programmes were aired nowadays.. but they would probably get away with it if the shooters were " A sexual " none gender LGBT immigrants or them soy boy hipster freaks who sit in Starbucks talking about Ed Sheeran and Kim Kardashian .. But a real man has no chance.
Can't beat it a shooting program with camera shots in the hide of a bottle of whiskey or suchlike!!!! Brilliant we just Wouldn't see that today hahaha!!!
I had the privilege to be beating on a shoot that Jack used to have a day every year and during a break he spoke about the series and that this episode was the one he remembered most fondly
my dad has shot pigeon most of his life he met archy in the eighties and said what a very modest man he was no bragging no bullshit just realy good advice its not about the numbers its about enjoying the day
The old boy talks like he's one of the nobility yet he hasn't got the manners to remove his pipe from between his teeth when he talks. The thing wasn't even lit so it was totally unnecessary!
@@johnrhodes7042 I quite agree. The father of the art of pigeon decoying, a first class shot and a consummate English Gentleman. Yet forever consigned to ignominy because he spoke with his pipe in his mouth. Rather silly really.
Robert Harvey You can imagine his tombstone. Here lies Major Archie Coates, Best pigeon shot that ever lived. But a twat because he wouldn't take his pipe out 😢 RIP I feel some people need to GET A GRIP !!!!
Oh yes I remember watching this program when I was a lad Archie my pigeon shooting hero, 👍👌🇬🇧
Major Coats a national treasure, sadly we will not see the likes of him again. Very nostalgic and heartwarming to watch. Thank you for sharing this
Class video. Love watching these old shows on youtube. Why can't we have shows like this today?
Political Correctness - it has ruined our way of life.

Brilliant! Sadly we won't see the likes of Jack's Game or Clarissa and the countryman on tv again.
Great to see this film again. Wish it could be the same today on tv but sadly things have changed for the worst!
