Rina, You're welcome! This project is completely doable - you just need a little patience. And... wow! The results are just perfect. This treatment almost hangs itself because the fabric is cut on the bias and the fabric naturally wants to fold that way. It's a well-kept secret until now. I'm not a fan of scarf valances for that reason. I have spent hours of my life trying to get a solid piece of fabric to look like this treatment = never going to happen. I hope you give it a go! Great question! You could glue some decorative trim to the face side fabric and let it hang over the non-pretty side. They make fringe glue that works perfectly. You glue it in place, let it sit overnight and hang it back up the next day. I hope this helps! All the best, Renee

The continuous piece of fabric (sewn together in many pieces) is just placed over the rod, which is long enough to span over the entire window. It will hang in pleats beautifully with minimal effort and stay in place by it's own weight. Renee

Hi Anna, You can add as many swags as you'd like to this pattern. The pattern is from a company called M'Fay and it's their Basic Pole Swag. You can get these in two swag depths so choose which ever makes sense for your situation. All the best, Renee
Renee, Thank you so much for your video. Do you think I could use this pattern(9207) to make one valance with 2-15" swags on the ends and a 18" swag in the middle? Window 22.5" (then 7.5" wall) 58.5" wide window in the middle (7.5" wall)then 22.5" window. Would I divide the wall space in half to get the width of the smaller and larger swags? Would you be concerned about the size of the extra bias piece I would need to attach for the middle window swag because it is so wide? My material is beautiful but plain. Would you use two extra pieces on the middle swag instead of one larger extra piece? Could I bring my jabot down to the floor? In the pattern they say to add 3 inches... how do I apply that to this application?
David Schott, I think that one large swag, sandwiched by two smaller swags would be gorgeous! Yes, dividing the wall space in half would be the way to go for your measurements. If you use two smaller pieces on the large swag, chances are that most of the seams will be hidden by folds. You could also experiment with placing the larger swag underneath the the smaller swags for complete coverage of the seams. Yes, you can bring your jabot to the floor but keep in mind that it will take a lot of fabric to do this and you'll be cutting away a lot of it that won't be used. May I suggest two plain drapery panels (hung beneath this treatment) with shorter jabots draped on top of them? I assume the 3 inches refers to the additional fabric that wraps back toward the wall? If so, it's not necessary to add it, it's just to eliminate light seepage around the jabots. If you add drapery panels to the floor, then this will be a non-issue anyway. I hope this helps! If you don't add the extra 3 inches to EACH swag, your window treatment won't hang properly over the pole. It just means enlarging the curve of your swag a little bit on both sides (in your case, by 1 1/2 inches). Perfect!
Yes 3 inches extra each swag. That makes my middle large swag 69 inches. My extra pieces would be very large. I could use a lengthwise grain for the middle swag or consider a different design for my 3 window set up. I know that you did not recommend anything but a bias and I can see why. The material hangs so much nicer.@@ReneeRomeo

One of the funny things with this pattern is that you don't notice the seams as much as you think you will when everything is hung, pleated and finished. Try taking a giant string and mimicking the bottom edge of the swags by tacking it up with tape. You may be able to see exactly where a good bit of the seamed area will be hidden by the pleats. I'm certain that if the center swag is placed behind the other two swags, the seams will be a non-issue though.

They supply professional workroom patterns (to fit larger windows) but you can use a Simplicity or Butterick pattern for smaller windows. Julie g, The pattern number for M'Fay is 9207. When I measure a window, I add two inches total width beyond the window casing (ie: one inch larger on the right and one inch larger on the left) . That leaves enough room for the fabric to return back to the wall and make the window appear slightly larger than it really is. If you have drapes hanging underneath the swags, you can make the swags any width you like because the drapes will hide the window casing completely. That's what I have done with mine. The windows in the room were too small and I wanted them to appear larger. Great idea about the muslin! It's a cheap thing to throw away if you want to adjust your measurements after it's cut- Love it! You'll do great! Renee
I love your video but it's just to much work for me anymore so I will stick to draping by eye and stepping back and adjusting accordingly... Lol. I have been a sewer all my life and I have made many curtains... Some have been very intricate and detailed but I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and my hands aren't what they used to be so that's why I have to drape by eye. Your doing a great job :)
MONIKA SICKELS, I'm sorry to hear that you have arthritis - that disease took sewing away from my Grandmother too. She would say that she liked watching me sew my projects instead anyway (lol). Austenhead, You can absolutely do this with patterned fabric. Just make sure you center the main motif on each swag to make it look professional. Renee
Can you please show how to make an open neck swag - used to be called a "necklace swag" - for a stationary drape? It was called a "necklace" swag because it laid on the drape just like a necklace would on the neck of a woman's body. It's rather narrow, not wide at all. NO ONE seems to show how to make them here, although I see them a lot in magazines. Would be for a stationary drape that's 12" wide at the rod from one side to the other. The drapes hang on clip-on rings. So the swag would be 14"-16" wide at the top where it would be attached to the clip-on ring that's on the pole, and hang 14"-16" down at the center bottom of the swag. Hope you understand what I mean. Wish I could post a photo/drawing to better explain. Can NOT find a how-to for them anywhere!! Thank you SO very much if you could do this. Or if you can't, if you know where/how to find instructions to make it.

Hi Floyd, Too funny! I promise you that once you have everything cut out, it will all fall into place. If you're still unsure, you can use the same fabric for the face as you do for the lining. It will be more costly but you'll be assured that no matter how it's hung, it will be correct. Just a thought! Renee

Margaret, Great, thanks for asking! I used an open pole swag pattern from a company called M'Fay. They supply professional workroom patterns (to fit larger windows) but you can use a Simplicity or Butterick pattern for smaller windows. Hi Renee- Nice job on the video. I am going to attempt this by your drawing. Any tips on deciding how much more than the measurements of the window I will need? I keep watching your video over and over before I take the leap.I figure I will draw a pattern on a piece of muslin to get the right size. If I get stuck, do you know the pattern number for m'fay?

Julie g, The pattern number for M'Fay is 9207. When I measure a window, I add two inches total width beyond the window casing (ie: one inch larger on the right and one inch larger on the left) . That leaves enough room for the fabric to return back to the wall and make the window appear slightly larger than it really is. If you have drapes hanging underneath the swags, you can make the swags any width you like because the drapes will hide the window casing completely. That's what I have done with mine. The windows in the room were too small and I wanted them to appear larger. Great idea about the muslin! It's a cheap thing to throw away if you want to adjust your measurements after it's cut- Love it! You'll do great! Renee
I love your video but it's just to much work for me anymore so I will stick to draping by eye and stepping back and adjusting accordingly... Lol.
I have been a sewer all my life and I have made many curtains... Some have been very intricate and detailed but I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and my hands aren't what they used to be so that's why I have to drape by eye.

MONIKA SICKELS, I'm sorry to hear that you have arthritis - that disease took sewing away from my Grandmother too. She would say that she liked watching me sew my projects instead anyway (lol). Sandra, M'Fay has professional workroom patterns available to the public. I used this pattern all the time when I was making swags for my clients. Great quality paper and written instructions. Good luck with your sewing project! Renee

Right. So. Look for fabric with no discernable pattern and two identical faces. Then drape it around the pole and pin it in place. Yep. Got it.
Austenhead, You can absolutely do this with patterned fabric. Just make sure you center the main motif on each swag to make it look professional. Renee

Can you please show how to make an open neck swag - used to be called a "necklace swag" - for a stationary drape? It was called a "necklace" swag because it laid on the drape just like a necklace would on the neck of a woman's body. It's rather narrow, not wide at all. NO ONE seems to show how to make them here, although I see them a lot in magazines.
Would be for a stationary drape that's 12" wide at the rod from one side to the other. The drapes hang on clip-on rings. So the swag would be 14"-16" wide at the top where it would be attached to the clip-on ring that's on the pole, and hang 14"-16" down at the center bottom of the swag. Hope you understand what I mean. Wish I could post a photo/drawing to better explain. Can NOT find a how-to for them anywhere!! Thank you SO very much if you could do this. Or if you can't, if you know where/how to find instructions to make it.
adrianne hunt, You've come to the right place! I've made these before and there IS a trick to getting them to pleat really well. It's not a difficult process at all. Based on my list of projects that I'm working on, I hope to get to making a video about it in the Fall. I have a laundry room and powder room that are in need of remodeling first - grrrr! But... Hi ZSHERBEAR 777, I posted this for people that want to learn how to make the whole window treatment. Once everything is properly assembled, it practically hangs itself. You can't get the same results that I did without sewing it yourself. But... I'm open to constructive criticism and thank you for your thoughts. Hi Floyd, Too funny! I promise you that once you have everything cut out, it will all fall into place. If you're still unsure, you can use the same fabric for the face as you do for the lining. It will be more costly but you'll be assured that no matter how it's hung, it will be correct. Just a thought! Renee
