When using gain, fuzz, etc on bass you have to mix/EQ in a very specific way to cut through tastefully. Almost all the really great sounding gain bass distortions on their own don’t work with a full band. If you mix music a lot you already know this. You need some dry signal and some bright fizzy gain. Som Mids help you cut through in a clean way but don’t necessarily let you hear the gain.
I used one of these for a bit and it's got some wicked sounds in it. I just wish the EQ only affected the distorted signal rather than the dry signal as well...
The bassist from Softcult has really great tones and uses this. He goes from a compressor into the ODB-3, then into a Darkglass preamp, then direct into the PA. Thanks for sharing this live reaction/demo. I really appreciate your insights and humor. You really do inspire me to play more and have fun with sound, and fixate less on gear.
I think in a band mix context the dry signal is great, retaining the clarity and bass then having some saturation to cut through. I like the lowest gain setting in theory, this pedal is very square wave sounding. Maybe running a compressor in front with the level really low then will give more headroom for low gain. Underrated pedal that’s built strong. can be bought cheap to build out a bass board with a couple other pedals
I have this pedal and I mainly use a Ibanez GSR200 with the built in boost/cut ( EMG Preamp) it kicks ass with this so much head room and happy bee distortion and everything on my amp wide open
I used to play a few Primus tunes with this. It was fun to really mess with the EQ and get a little growl going while I scooped the mids on my amp. Gave it a kind of hollow growl of sorts. Pretty cool especially doing things like American Life or Fisticuffs.
I swear by my lil Big Muff on bass. I've also been getting great results plugging into a Realistic Reverb. The mic input has my favorite fuzz sound in my whole arsenal.
Hey I'm just getting into learning about analog music production, love and appreciate your content, was wondering if you could answer a question... Let's say I'm recording something at home using a mixer into the 4 track porta, and I get everything sounding how I want it on the playback... How exactly might I go about "releasing" this recording for others? Do I record the cassette into a DAW like FL Studio and then release it on Bandcamp? What exactly is the "master" tape in this instance, the one to be used for (hypothetical) pressings-the cassette? I know very little about this stuff so anything you could share would be super helpful. Thanks and keep making great videos!
hey there! great question! Yes... you should record the main outs, or stereo out, of your portastudio during playback (generally called "mix down"), and then you have a digital file... a simple stereo file... of your music. the work is not over, however, as you or anyone with Mastering experience needs to take that track and bring it up to levels that can be distributed. There's more to it than that, and the mastering engineer (which can be you!) can also affect the sound of the "two bus". Once mastered, you can distribute anywhere. I use Distrokid, but I also upload to bandcamp myself. Bandcamp is very cool because it's still very DIY and there is no barrier to entry. I hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions!
these days I have an analog mixdown set up, so for portastudio i'm doing nothing in the box. Did you ever see my video on the Kush plugins? ua-cam.com/video/o74IagB09dE/v-deo.html
@@MadeOnTape I missed that I love Kush plugins Greg Scott is a great guy and uber genius designer. Ill check it Sometimes I only use a Kush transformer on a group bus...that's it!. I love the AR compressor on slow stuff as well... Oops I've seen it And I forgot. Re watching it.
I have one coming in soon! I owned one about 15 years ago, and didn't like it. As it turns out, I couldn't use properly either. I hated that glued on bees-in-a-bottle distortion that you get if you use the balance knob improperly.
ah yes bees in a bottle. I've never heard that expression but it's perfect. i was really keen on fully wet, but that was solo'd...everything changes in a mix
What's funny is that one of those darkglass pedals people love so much was designed for a guy who used to use two of these lol
whoa i had no idea! that is funny 😂
I too found one of these at my parents house recently. They work well on synths too!
yes! can’t wait to try it on synth!

right that’s what i learned. you gotta commit 😂
@@MadeOnTape Yes, maybe I was trying to use it too tastefully...which is very unlike me! 😄

Just got one, and had the same reaction you had with the bass boost-big boost!!
yesssssss big bassss
'Don't Worry' by Marty Robbins was one of the first songs to have distorted bass, which was from equipment malfunctioning.
yes! deep cut
9:45 or the intro before the band kicks in
oh yahhh 100%
Just like Token had a bass in his basement, i do have an odb-3 in my cupboard I totally forgot about.
you PLAY THE BASS

oooh yes there are sleeper fuzzes all around us 🙌
I've been gigging one of these for the past 6 months or so. Can't find any other ODs that scratch the same itch for me

I like your videos. I have a tascam 424 from years ago at my mom's in the original packaging and everything. I should get it sent to me. 👍🏼
yes you should! You'll probably still need to change the belts, but that's easy... check out the UA-cam channel "Tetrakan"

lol i still get carded and I'm closer to 40 than 30
The ODB-3 is great sounding, but I wouldn't use a drive like this on a bass DI. Going through an amp+cab it sounds awesome though!
there's definitely something about the way a speaker moving air adds so much. I agree 100%
thanks for listening!
Motor city guitar is the best music place in metro Detroit… music go round in Troy is also great.
this thing really sounds like shit
steamy and beautiful 🥰💩
put it back in that drawer 😂

Great video! But this pedals it's very crappy just like i remember
😂
Most people don’t like pedals because they can’t figure out how to use them properly..
I’ve heard lots of people describe this “overdrive “ as fuzz. All I hear is buzz. 😳
