Dude, thanks. I never knew etching could be done so simply. I must try now. I use the cameo machine for paint stencils quite often and sometimes for sand blasting rock stencils so this is right up my alley.
Great video. I've been in the vinyl industry for a long time now, one trick I'd recommend for when you are burnishing it onto transfer film is to use either a rubber squeegee or even just a plastic card. it generally gives a good seal after just a few passes with light pressure. I'm just about to dabble in some knifemaking, so I've been enjoying your videos, thanks for the tips.
I answered my own question. I tested it on some stainless steel, (RW-34 Damasteel) and it etched well. Pad negative etched deep but not very dark so I changed the polarity and it went black.
That can always be arranged LOL. Check out this Sea Turtle themed chef knife I made. bergknifemaking.com/collections/frontpage/products/nautical-themed-chef-knife
I’ve been etching metal stainless, copper, brass, & silver using different solutions, ferric nitrate for silver, copper sulfate + salt for stainless etc.. I have a 12 volt battery and just ordered the cameo to use with metal clay and other projects.. I’ve seen the electro etching before but this was the best tutorial seeing the set-up, procedure etc... I’ve held back because it makes me a bit a nervous but thanks to this video I will give it a try. Are there specific ratios of salt to water depending on metal? Any safety tips.? Thanks so much Nan
I love that you showed everyone how to use a die cutting machine to make stencils for etching! However, you never went over the settings for you batter charger nor did you go over the chemicals you were using to complete the etch. I did try the links to see if the information could be found there with no luck. I am interested in using this technique to mark business tools if you could please get with me that would be great.
I use a 12 volt car battery charger set at 2 amps. For high carbon steel I use salt water as the electrolyte solution. For stainless I mix white vinegar with salt.
Is this how metal nail art plates are made? Do you have a safety video like this? I want to try this and i have a jump box and access to a plotter/cricut but am terrified to use it and get shocked!
Thank you so much for the video. I have never used a cameo machine and have previously used a chemical and marker to etch on copper. I am just starting to shop for a vinyl cutter so I can make more detailed etchings. Will the salt water method work on copper? I have a car battery charger. Can I use that and salt water? Thank you in advance.
just out of curiosity, what would happen if you accidentally reversed polarities with the DC current (gauze/water positive and ground on the work piece)??
Thank you, I love the video. But I have to ask is there another way to do etching besides having to buy that expensive printer and stencil material? My little shop is already jammed packed and I really can not afford to pick about yet another machine. I am extremely interested in adding this to my metal fabrication skill set, but I just do not want to invest in another device.
Thank you, I ended up finding out about that route later on, on the same night that I saw this video. :) I'm using that for now, until I can afford to pick up a machine like this and can make some more space....somehow.
@@poweredbyestrogen1166 I guarantee you can find someone in your town to make some stencils for you. There are a lot of crafters about. Post on FB. If you provide the art files it will be a cinch!
I'm kicking myself. I just finished helping a friend declutter her home. Her hubby had two battery chargers I thought I had no use for. We sent them off to Goodwill. : (
This is old but you can use spray paint, I have considered printing in reverse and then spray painting the resist and then acid etching. It does seem pretty fiddly though. @@DIYeasycrafts
I will take a look when I get home. Nothing special. In fact when I started doing etching projects I just went into the garage and dug up my old charger. The only thing important on the charger is the ability to switch it to 2 amps.
@@dustinhollis Sandblasting works well on glass.Make a vinyl stencil with a Cameo or other CNC cutter and stick it to the glass. Check the sandblaster PSI. If I recall correctly, I was using around 70 PSI. 100 PSI will eat through the vinyl.

it is cool, but do it with a simple printer, on brass, copper, stainless, alu and mild steel. we are having the stuff to do this feel free to contact me. or search for Cougartron.
You are barely able to hear you talking in this video. I never thought to use my machine stencils for this purpose or to use a battery charger in this way, pretty cool.
Love the info. Very detailed and informative. Would subscribe and watch more but I'm afraid that music would be in more of your videos and if I listen to another second of it, my head would explode. Please, shoot the musician playing your background music. Pure torture. How can you stand that
Any non-glossy(glossy is usualy permanent adhesive) vinyl. Oracal 631 is temporary, Oracal 651 is permanent. Silhouette vinyl can be purchased at Wal-mart and is usually non-permanent.
I have to say thank you, I tried this and it works great. Saved me a ton of $$$ on my makers mark by doing this...
Awesome glad it helped

First etching video I’ve seen using a better charger rather than a battery! Nice job 👍🏼

Does the metal blade corrodes overtime ?
I mean, is that harmful for the blade?
does the blade loses strength as well?

@@DIYeasycrafts But you can use this technique for chemical etching.
Does anyone know which is better between using Ferric Chloride, and using this method?
Can you use a Cricut machine to etch also ?
Eslie Taylor yes you can

No silly questions. Yes and be careful never to touch both ends

Hello, what software do you use? Is it supplied with the cutter as a pack?
Yes came with the cutter. I also use corel draw for some of the art
@@DIYeasycrafts Many thanks. Have a good day 😊
just out of curiosity, what would happen if you accidentally reversed polarities with the DC current (gauze/water positive and ground on the work piece)??
Switching between AC and DC changes the color, if my research is accurate. One produces light color, while the other produces dark.
@@amlaboy DC etches the metal, AC will mark the metal black.
Does it etch on stainless steel?
Yes. I etch with 6v 1-2 A on stainless steel with no problem :)
How many times can you use a stencil? Once or many more?
Just once

just salt water

Much deeper. Just increase the time of etch for more depth
Yes. Basically the longer you etch the deep it will be
