Those guns must be shooting BBs. It takes dozens of rounds to kill one bug.
There is an explanation in the movie. You basically have to hit the nerve stem in the center of the bug, but the soldiers in the movie aren't well trained enough to go for kill shots. And they face thousands of these things, so they resolve to the good old tactic of spray and pray.
