A Youth 'Overworked To Death' In Name Of 'Hard Work'; Can Toxic Work Culture Kill? | Urban Debate
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 вер 2024
- In this episode of Urban Debate, anchor Shreya Dhoundial discusses how a grieving mother's letter to Ernst & Young India has sparked online outrage, highlighting the "toxic work culture" in offices, particularly at the "Big Four" accounting firms. Anita Augustine, mother of 26-year-old chartered accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil from Kochi, blamed the "excessive workload" at Ernst & Young for her daughter's death. Anna had joined the firm in Pune in March, and her health rapidly declined due to the overwhelming pressure, Augustine wrote in a now-viral letter addressed to EY India head Rajiv Memani.
A panel of experts has joined Shreya Dhoundial to discuss this in detail. Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi says “Mental Health is an important issue, and corporates should take the onus for it..” Psychotherapist Harleen Bagga says “We are focusing on what the stakeholders want and not the culture invoked..” Watch the full video to know more and follow Mirror Now for the latest updates.

Why is May 1st a holiday? To me, it marks the day in 1886, the workers movement demanded for the eight-hour workday. Since then that work culture has been widely adopted in many countries. Unfortunately, the eight-hour shift is rarely practised in our country. Nurses have gone on strike without success, railway loco pilots often face extended shifts that have led to accidents, and police officers rarely get an eight-hour schedule. These are just a few examples of the ongoing issues.

Oh man it’s sad same shit everywhere 😊
Companies dont care. HR does not care for employees. They care for employers interests only.
The only solution is
1. Build buffers so you can go a few months without an income while you upskill / look for another job.
2. Dont take on debt like home loan etc, esp early in your career. Once your employer knows you desperately need a salary to pay off EMI's every month, they will automatically start taking advantage of you.
3. Always look at upskilling and increasing your value to other potential employers so that you can switch easily. Dont get complacent and stop learning new stuff.
4. Look at setting up second sources of income at the individual or family level - it could be your wife working, it could be a side hobby on weekends that brings in some money etc.
The most important of all is money management and learning to save and invest. Most indians have no idea about these things and it is in the govt as well as employers interest that the common man does not learn these things.

Exploitation and toxic environment in companies results in stress
In most of the private Ltd companies, employees have to work more than 12 hours a day for six days. Even on Sundays they are called on to work for some unavoidable tasks. There is no work life balance in these companies. Employees are thus bonded labourers.
I still remember our ceo proudly saying that one of his employee fainted on-site because of the stress but now he can handle even more stress, everybody clapped for him. I was like, wtf..?
Not taking away anything from Anna, may she rest in peace. It is not easy to pass one of the toughest exams in the world and then fight the stress and work culture that measures work based on time spent instead of productivity.
Even after making the staff overwork, these institutes still manage to ignore or not detect major frauds in companies they audit. Says so much about loss of productivity due to overwork. Point being, everyone is at a loss..
India government never had any intention of providing a good work culture for private employees.
In a private sector job, most of the time they humiliate their employees.

Then there was the case of the Nasscom head Dewang Mehta way back. Also, Sushant Balsekar passed away recently. He was head of publicity for a big auto firm. Startup founder Pankhuri Srivastava also passed away in her early 30s.
Such Toxic manager's should be jailed
All these companies allow their employees to charge 9 hours only, but they bill client actual hours in dollars. This is bound to happen. I have seen managers asking employees to complete 20 hour work on a friday, and then say I dont want you to work on weekends. They know very well that employee will be compelled to work on weekend, but they dont want to give a comp off.
And about these politicians, they are the ones who brought these big companies to metros, claiming that it will give employment to locals. But then locals just lost their land, and jobs were given to migrants like us. Politicians earned in SEZ deals, they own all the land near SEZ for restaurants, flats etc, they earn even when policeman takes bribe. Locals hate us migrants thinking that we are the problem. Hopefully our Youth will be saved
Youth are the real wealth of any country
All these corporate companies shud be fined and punished for forcing employees to work beyond 8 hrs
And gow many of us want to drop a comment here and make an exposé but are scared of having become a target if found out.
This is a very sad incident. And not only private companies are responsible for this. High cost of living and the huge tax regime are making life tougher every day.
All the private companies have policies in place just for compliance and nothing else. But in reality all companies through verbal and non-verbal languages teach and practice 'Dont say No to clients'. And clients (Private and Govt.) suck every drop of blood in the name of contract agreement. As I said, the Govt. has to seriously work on reducing the burden of the middle class.
As far as i know malayalis are really sweet, friendly and helpful nature.. Not found in others when i heard this news it was very painful.. I feel as if humanity has lost infront of the cruel world
Why is this seen only from the perview of the Company?
Shldnt it be seen with a broader lens of how policies, laws, procedures, play a large part in the over work culture ?
Our taxation structure, compliances, corporate laws, legal laws, contribute to so much of paperwork n filing of documents that it’s a never ending workload.
Every Industry - be it Hospitality, Aviation, Entertainment, Journalism, Banking, Retail, Construction, has it’s fair share of workload which is never-ending.
Things are so complicated that sometimes 16 hrs are also less.
I have worked in both Hospitality and IT Industry n let me tell u, there's no escape from the work coz u r always firefighting a crisis on daily basis.
And imagine if u r wrkg for the USA sitting in India. So u r trying to juggle with ur Indian counterpart, including USA Counterpart at different time zones.
So Govt. work at micro levels like having simpler Taxation Structure where the Company's employees are not always on audit n tax filing mode.

Employee will go in do his job the best he can come back relax have a good time on weekends n go back to work on Monday. Why cant we have this structure in place? I thought this happens in Kolkata only but now I see this is a disease. Profit making at all cost disease. A toxic culture that is in place. I remember attending an interview of 5 6 rounds. There is no regulations on private companies in India..Specially Indian companies..many of the employees are facing lot of issues but due to lot of responsibilities on head they have to work...No increments , no promotions , no perks and no refreshments..People are working years with same job..And notice period of 3 months is more toxic
Rat race is something that we have to avoid. Some of the recommendations are:
Step 1: Keep an emergency fund (equal to 6 months expense).
Step 2: Become debt free
Step 3: Invest some funds in a diversified portfolio.
Note: To people who will comment "it is not possible". I started my career at 3.5 lpa package and i could do.
This gave me the confidence to sleep good at night and switch careers whenever i want.
Absolutely its possible. If can stay away from temptation of buying every new trend one can save !
Many MNCs that are in great competitive environment, have this toxic culture. Even many Indian companies have this. There are very few true Leaders in all companies. Most (95+%) are glorified Managers. When will Corporate employees ORGANIZE into Unions? That's the ONLY SOLUTION.
If you have any self respect then do not work for the big 4
Bullying happens everywhere even in schools ...the problem is it is normalised.
As an X Accenture employee, i can say that there is no work life balance. My collegue and good friend died the same way. Even while he was unwell he was called to work and the very next day when he asked for leave, he was told to take med and come. He died while returning to his home from the medical shop. The management just went on with the work like nothing happened. Pathetic work culture.
Since a decade (10+ years) I have been working almost 17-19 hours daily without any break. I have breakfast, lunch and dinner at the work desk. And my work includes handling heated arguments with illogical and senseless people too. Its hard for me to understand how stress and work can kill someone.
With complete regard to sad demise of the young girl and with my condolences to her family I would like to state that work never kills anyone. India is a democratic country and EY has a strict No-Fire rule, wherein the company rarely fires someone. So, if this girl would have simply showed up to office during office hours and not worked atall, still it would take 6-8 months for the company to fire her. This was enough time for her to find a suitable job.
Willing working extra hours (for promotion or any other goal) cannot be attributed to the company.
NOTE: I am aware EY has toxic work culture, but that is due to people working there , not because of the company policies.
Think again , asking the chairman to resign would solve the problem created by people like Asst Mgr, Mgr, Consultant , Team Lead ??
Probably the chairman himself is against such practices .. did anyone check before axing the chairman ?
This is because these companies exploit outdated labor laws and India's large population. In contrast, they are unable to take similar advantage in EU countries or other parts of the world due to stricter labor regulations. In those regions, individuals can hold companies accountable through legal action if such practices occur.
Earnest and Young... Ban the butchers 🙄🙄
It is better to own small business 💯
Corporate pays peanuts and give stress and pressure like startup founder. 😓
It's really a shame for this company especially when no one came to her funeral. I know this will be forgotten tomorrow and some people will only talk about this and never make any efforts to change. What's the point of such company who does not treats their employees as humans. RIP humanity.

It's so disheartening to watch young people, who r extremely well educated dying early because of work pressure in this case. And by rape and murder in young Kolkata trainee doctor s case. What kind of work culture we are providing to young people?
Even Navika Kumar is the best example for being a smart work lady rather than doing hard work
Not only in the corporate sector pupil are facing same problem in the banking sector and education sector and ect . Are there
Sad thing is that this cannot be proved and the case will be closed..
A well balanced analysis. CAs get the wrong end of the stick. Long and endless hours of work is routine, but is always balanced by a larger head count. As the deadlines are tight. Problem arises when the head count is squeezed and compounded by poor quality of Managerial supervision. Time to introspect and take a balanced view instead of the hackneyed “ during our times we worked hard”.. Are you all out there listening??? Time to change and reflect.
Yes. My friend suffered Brain Hemorrhage cause he was under pressure to complete few tasks that was not pending due to his fault. He survived after operation but he had to leave the job and now try to do less stressful job. Company did not do anything for him.
EY must be made to pay compensation, at least, a million dollar. The CEO must face the court of justice for forcing the the employees to work live bonded labourers.
