    New series where we look at the sketchy things done by trading card grading companies. Should you trust them? Should you use their services? In this episode we take a look at BGS Beckett Grading Services and their obvious preferential grading for Joe Clemons. This is sports related but could easily happen in Pokemon where the value of cards is increasing.

    I been grading cards with BGS for the past 4 or so years, and I go thru a LCS submitter. the LCS I go thru was sending in thousands of cards per month before BGS closed down most of their services, and whenever they get cards back from any graders, they would always do a "reveal" video. In the past 4 or so years, I have probably seen 4 BGS 10s in all the reveal videos(and no the 4 BGS 10s were not my cards). I have yet to see one single BGS black label from all the submissions sent thru my LCS(again, they send in thousands of cards per month). So for that guy Joe Clemons to get that many BGS 10s and Black Labels, there is def something sketchy going on with him and BGS.

    I have always thought the grading companies should have two or three inspectors grade a card and must get 2 of the 3 same grades to make an official grade.

      It's an interesting idea but would significantly drive up costs and grading time.
      Because a. the grading companies only REALLY care about money, they aren't going to change for that. b. most people sending cards for grade are only looking to flip so they want the cheapest and fastest returns possible
      Both are screwing over true collectors who are the minority in the hobby.

    I was a huge baseball collector as a young kid. I never did like the idea of sending off my cards to a third party. Why should I trust grading companies was my thought then and still now to this day. Please condsider the fact that they may ALL truly be real black labels stolen from customers and placed off to the side and replaced with weaker cards. Since this hobby has changed so much I almost sent off some of my best card to be graded but I still have no faith in this process.

      I'm sorry, but you're just an idiot if you seriously think grading companies like PSA or BGS would do something like that. Do you have any idea how fast they would get caught? Do you really think people wouldn't notice that the card they got back wasn't the same one they submitted? Do you think people don't take detailed photos of their really expensive cards for insurance purposes before sending them out to be graded? They would get caught almost immediately and it would completely destroy their reputation beyond any hope of repair. What motive could they possibly have that would be worth taking a risk like that? It makes no sense whatsoever.

    A friend of mine recently submitted a single high value card at a large convention at the BGS booth. The card viewed under a variety of magnification and lighting environments was pretty much perfect. Even better in comparison to an already graded card on hand (10,10,9.5,9.5). Anyhow the card returned 3x9.5 and 9 on corners, which is just insainty. Not even a true gem was awarded. Anyhow my belief is that on a single submission they won't hand out elite grades to a joe schmo, those are reserved for ppl with stature.

    Grats on 9k man. Amazing growth that’s awesome. Just got this recommended for me so watched it through. Great video and I feel the same way. It sucks but it is actually obvious that grading companies just do it for the money. you can get multiple cards of different grades and you can always find a 9 that is cleaner and better centered then a 9.5 or 10. But how does it happen, besides the fact that there is no set standards to determine a grade and it’s just a “guess” by a “grader”. They hold no responsibility to consistency or accuracy.

    • @ObstagoonGuy
      @ObstagoonGuy 2 роки тому

      Good comment! But I mean, of course they do it for the money, because they are a business. And businesses want to make money. I don't really see a huge issue with cards in slightly worse quality get the same or even a higher grade in some cases. I think in modern times there are better and more reliable ways to prevent this kind of "human error" and - as you said - there should be a clearer grading guideline as to what aspects lead to which grade, but it is what it is. Every business has its flaws that could be prevented. For example, the Pokémon company had abysmal print quality in most of their 2021 products. Some cards came in "heavy played" condition straight out of the pack. I pulled a Alternate Art Tyranitar V from Battle Styles and it looks worse than some of my childhood Base set cards. Mistakes can and will happen everywhere.
      It really becomes an issue though when it's not human erroranymore, but knowingly giving away high grades for cards that don't deserve them. Because that hurts every collector in the hobby as it devalues the credibility of the company and therefore their grading.

      I read a post in a forum recently, and the poster said that they’d submitted ~$25,000 worth of originals (that they’d pulled from packs) to PSA. I think they said 13 cards total. They said all of them came back as UNABLE TO GRADE as they were not authentic. The guy who posted the story said that he’d taken pictures and scans of each of his cards before he sent them, and after comparing the pictures and the scans to the cards he got back, 11 of them were not the cards he originally sent. He said he had already retained an attorney, but considering it was his word against theirs, he was afraid not much would go in his favor. His post was just to warn anyone reading, and let me tell you it absolutely terrified me. I can’t imagine holding onto something for your entire life and then the one time you let it out of your site, it’s to be authenticated by the top company in their respective field, but said company “allegedly” swaps your real cards worth $$$$$ with fakes.
      I actually believe this happened.

    Thank you for sharing all of this information. I have never been a real big fan of "graded" cards and the grading companies that overcharge just to put a label and seal your card in plastic. There is literally no standard or 3rd party inspections to check on these grading companies. It is literally impossible most of the time to tell the difference between most 9, 9.5, 10s and 10 black labels. Until robo grading picks up, there will always be the subjectivity of employees of these companies to favor some over others. I understand the chase of getting the highest grade of a certain card, but when purchasing something, customers should buy the card first and then the label second. Too many are willing to pay too much just for the label, even when the card inside the case is a common/easier to come by card.

    Mind you I'm a fan of TCAGaming and I'm not even not 100% sure if it was a favor or not, but this reminds me of how TCA submitted those recent metal Pokemon cards to PSA and apparently they sent them back due saying they will not grade metal cards anymore. Well TCA makes a video about specifically about PSA not grading his metal cards (which was clearly a video made *to* PSA and less his audience knowing they watch his videos) basically saying why they should be accepted them etc etc. Then a few videos later he's opening his PSA returns and he has a bunch of metal cards that were graded, and now those cards are worth thousands. So did PSA just let it "slide" for TCA and grade them anyways?

    • @richardcoveney614
      @richardcoveney614 2 роки тому +1

      I'm pretty sure he sent in a couple of batches of the metal cards, the initial wave of them got slabbed and sent back out alongside other collectors but then there were reports of damage to the cards in the slabs (I think like paint chipping off the metal when it bumps against the sides of the case? Cant remember exact reason ) So because of this they said they were postponing the further grading of them. Probably his first batch got returned because it had already gone through the grading process

    You made a lot of good points in this video. The greed and questionable aspects in card grading, especially the past couple years, has really started to turn me off lately. I do like the PSA 10s I own and I feel they deserve the grade assigned, but on some cards I'm no longer paying the massive premium that it can carry unless I REALLY want it. I've actually been going more for PSA 8s to just have a regular NM copy that I can keep slabbed or decide to crack into a binder as they are in my experience actually NM compared to what most "NM" cards are on eBay as sellers exaggerate condition at times or hide damage in pics. Also in Pokemon people hate BGS and I find it funny that you can get a BGS 9.5 for the same price as PSA 9 or less at times. I also love collecting these because they are often 1/4 or 1/5 the price of a PSA 10, lol. The whole thing just feels like a big psychological mess at times. It's like you see the 10 on the label, but it's never actually a subjectively perfect card. Harder and harder to want to drop the big money on it.

    BGS grades best on thick cards and corners hands down.
    Black label tens are so loved. Much more than PSA.
    These guys are all working for PSA in some way probably.
    Or they are just use to PSA.
    PSA takes for ever to get cards back.
    PSA has many pros and cons
    Card protection is an issue for PSA.
    Cards move around too much in PSA slabs and get damaged all the time in transport.
    PSA needs stronger slabs.

I received a 9.5 but wonder if they just sent me the 9.5 🤔. How do you really know they actually cracked your slab?

    so long as the industry is using the human eye alone to grade tolerances it is bound to fail. Whomever achieves the ability to grade with minimal human oversight of grading will win in the end. Expanding services to streamlined on-site servicing while selling additional supplies would create more growth but it seems they are too stuck in their old ways and will eventually fade away like the typerwriter and its' once dominate position turned to dust.

    Question, did anyone not expect this to happen? There's to much incentive for someone on the inside or the third party company themselves to not manipulate the grading scales. Getting stuff graded is retarded unless it's not done by human hands. Subjective grading completely ruins any monetary value that doing something like that has in the first place. Trading cards, games, books, ect, all of it completely useless to get graded. People are way over paying for a stupid service. It's almost as bad as the money laundering that goes on in the art world if not that exactly. You can't nor should you even trust someone outside the company to regulate their grading scale. To many insider shaking hands as proven in the past.

    You don't really have to put that much thought into it. Any grading company that charges you more to grade the card if it is worth more, well , that's CLEARLY a conflict of interest, don't use that company, period. I use KSA , in Canada. They're only about 1 hour from my house and you can walk right in there and talk to the owner/grader. It's a flat rate per card , no matter the value and you can save on the currency exchange if you live in the States. He's really honest and a good guy. They've gone to more of a bulk format but that's ok, I'll just wait until I have at least 10 cards to grade, 20 cards for even more savings. MNT is also great.

    yea especially with all these smaller companies popping up like HGA...they are doing breaks on IG too...kinda sus to have a grading company doing breaks. A third party regulator should be established or these grading companies need to have more transparency on how they got to the grade they did.. IE AI reporting with heatmaps of cards etc. If they don't get to this point the investing side will die off quick as trust will evaporate.

      It protects the cards and provides a scale that other collectors can trust and it takes liability away from the seller. Selling a raw mint card versus a graded psa 9 card the person selling the raw card could run into a LOT more problems from someone buying it who will say it is not mint. Regardless if you agree with the grade PSA lr BGS gives, that grade alone will hold the value of the card and will sell based off that. Ive seen some awful 9s

Also not to mention the stupid shill bidding and the deliberate pop control. Evolutions charizard holo 11/108 has a psa 9 population of over 10000. I thought this was sort of fishy too until I realized/watched the video of him explaining that he cracked it out first and then sent it to bgs, thats a huge difference. When somebody is cross grating they are putting the company's name on the line saying that that is a 10 and if it isn't they are responsible for that psa 10 if they crack it and ruin it or missed something, so the grader is going to be extremely careful when upgrading to a 10, but when it is a fresh grade it is much less pressure and they also have a better look/feel for the card in its raw form.

    How do you feel about machines grading 100% of the card. Essentially all grading companies would cease to exist seeing how, as it stands, grading is opinion of a person(s).
    Before answering, I want to point out a few pro's
    - The cost would be a fraction per card
    - Cards wouldn't be judged based of price
    - Cards would be consistent grading unbiased by A.I
    - Return times would be irrelevant
    There ARE negatives but im curious on what others opinions are

    • @RattlePokemon
      @RattlePokemon  2 роки тому +3

      I'd have to see the entire process to have a real opinion on it. Typically A.I. ends up being used as more of a buzz word rather than an accurate description of the process. Initial cost to start up, process development and for maintenance would be much higher. Just because it is being graded by a computer doesn't mean there won't be mistakes made, damage done to the card, etc... The process would not be perfect even though people like to blindly believe it.

    • @owlacoustics3634
      @owlacoustics3634 2 роки тому

      @@RattlePokemon not right away, but grading centering and scratches would be almost 0 bias. I am sure some cracks would slip through but its got to be 1/1000 of human errors. Furthermore, I feel like the errors would be a card getting judged more harsh than slipping through the cracks and getting a higher grade it doesnt deserve.
      What I mean to say is, if you see a Ai 10, it would surely and truly probably be an actual 10. I think the issue would more be 10's that are arguably nothing visibly to the human eye being graded under 10, correct me if my assumption is wrong here?
      I think the many people are concerned that their 10's are not actual 10's, especially when comparing old labels. There are so many documented videos of this, so having consistency i think is a better trade-off.
      Also, to respond to the maintenance aspect, lasers need very little upkeep and cameras too, I think the machinery and movement of the arms and lubrication and power would be more the expense. If you used a system like a vending machine style grading machine, I cant see why you couldn't skip a lot of the issues of positioning issues.
      The company that PSA merged with a year ago was just made the companies president. So Genamint has already automated a lot of these without telling the public. They say its still humans, but every card is still scanned before the grading itself. They obviously still grade using humans or the popular cards wouldn't be getting lower than average grades consistently over 10x-20x more than holos from the same set.
